SHENYANG, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China mobilized helicopters for the first time in a highway medical rescue drill in northeast China' s Liaoning Province, the provincial bureau of transport said Thursday. The rescue drill took place at 10 a.m. on the Shenyang-Dalian highway where a bridge collapse and traffic pile-up purportedly injuring dozens was simulated. Two helicopters, an S-76 from China' s Ministry of Transport and an Mi-17 from Shenyang Military Command, were dispatched to rescue those acting as wounded in the blocked section inaccessible to rescue vehicles. The rescue workers were airlifted to the crash site and successfully extricated two "trapped" bus passengers within three minutes before transporting them to nearby hospitals.More than 300 people participated in the drill organized by China' s Ministry of Transport and the provincial government of Liaoning.

GUANGZHOU, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Forum opened Saturday in the southern city of Guangzhou with leading mainland and Taiwan representatives urging deeper economic ties and cooperation in green energy. This year's forum, a regular event between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) Party, focuses on cross-Strait cooperation in green energy, energy conservation and environmental protection.Wang Yi, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee, said the forum commenced as the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties achieved new progress. Wang Yi, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, presides over the opening ceremony of the sixth Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Culture Forum in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, July 10, 2010.The Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), reached between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan in late June, signaled that cross-Strait economic ties had entered a new stage of mutual benefits, he said while addressing the opening ceremony.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said cross-Strait economic cooperation is now facing unprecedented challenges while many opportunities exist as well."We should seize the opportunity and set up multi-level economic cooperation in a bid to benefit each other and, at the same time, boost our competitiveness and risk-resistance abilities," Jia said in his speech."The mainland is speeding up economic restructuring and boosting independent innovation and domestic demand. Meanwhile, Taiwan is also taking measures to restructure its economy and stimulate development," Jia added. He noted that cross-Strait economic cooperation still had much room to grow, especially in the science and technology fields.Jia said the new energy and environmental protection sectors could provide breakthroughs for promoting cross-Strait science and technology innovation. He hoped businessmen and experts would provide useful proposals regarding cooperation in technology research, intellectual property rights and fostering talent.More than 400 people from Taiwan and the mainland attended the forum on Saturday and Sunday in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong Province. The event is the sixth of its kind since the forum was first held in 2006.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Health on Monday publicized a draft revision of the national standard of iodine content in edible salt, in which it stated the upper limit should be lowered by half. The average iodine content would be reduced to between 20-30 mg per kg of edible salt, from the current 20-60 mg, according to the draft.Iodine intake was "excessive" in five provinces and "above normal" in 16 other provinces, although the national level was "acceptable," the ministry said Monday in a statement explaining the revisions.Members of the public are invited to make submissions on the draft revision to the ministry via fax and email before Sept. 12.The ministry said earlier this month iodized salt was still essential in China as benefits of it still outweighed the negatives, citing the results of a nationwide risk assessment on iodine intake. The assessment was carried out in response to claims by media and medical experts that people in some regions, coastal areas in particular, were taking in excessive amounts of iodine.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient. Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview. He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. China has diplomatic relations with nearly all African countries.

SHIJIAZHUANG, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged more efforts be made to push forward the nation's drive to restructure the economy and coordinate urban and rural development.Li made the remarks during an inspection tour of North China's Hebei Province on Thursday and Friday. He urged more efforts be undertaken to increase the competitiveness of the nation's businesses and provide stronger internal impetus to develop the economy through expanding both domestic and overseas demands and promoting technological, managerial, systemic and institutional innovations to raise the quality and efficiency of China's economic growth.Li also called for more efforts to move forward the urbanization drive in such a way that industry could promote agriculture while urban areas help rural regions, as the great potentials for market demand could be unleashed to provide strong support for stable, fast and long-term economic development. He also stressed the role of scientific planning, optimized distribution of resources, improved public services and living environment, and efficient land use in boosting rural development.Stabilizing grain and agricultural production was of particular importance to maintaining stable macro-economic development, Li said, urging more efforts be made to strengthen the foundation of the country's agricultural sector
