BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged Tuesday the European Union (EU) to objectively and fairly treat the RMB exchange rate issue as that would benefit the EU, China, and the world economy.Wen made the remarks while meeting the Euro Group troika, including Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.The meeting took place on the sidelines of the two-day eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels as China is under external pressure to appreciate its currency.Wen said China would further reform its formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to increase the currency's flexibility.China's central bank has announced on June 19 a series of steps of reforms. The Chinese currency has so far strengthened by about 2 percent against the U.S. dollar.China would also continue to expand import from the EU and strive to balance the trade, said Wen, adding that China was committed to transforming its economic development pattern, restructuring the economy and increasing domestic demands.Wen called on both sides to develop healthy ties from a strategic perspective as the EU has become China's largest trading partner while China stands as the EU's important exporting market.As the world economy was gradually recovering with uncertainties still hovering high, China and the EU should work together to combat the international financial crisis, Wen added.The Euro Group leaders appreciated China's support for the euro and the euro zone, saying the EU and China were good partners and enjoy extensive common interests.They also said the EU rejected both trade protectionism and currency war, and agreed differences and problems should be solved by dialogues.In a speech to the Greek parliament on Monday, Premier Wen said China supported a stable euro and would not reduce its euro-bond holdings.The three Euro Group leaders also held talks with China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren and central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan here on Monday. Wen said the talks were "detailed and friendly".

WENZHOU, Zhejiang, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least 246 tourists remain stranded on an island in east China's Zhejiang Province Tuesday as tropical storms and a typhoon cut off ship ferrying services Monday, local authorities said.The tourists, including six Russians and 26 students, have to stay in hotels in Nanji Island, a popular tourist destination in Wenzhou City of Zhejiang, after local transport authorities suspended ship services Monday due to strong gales triggered by two approaching tropical storms and typhoon Kompasu.Officials have said that room charges have been cut by up to 86 percent, to 40 yuan (5.9 U.S. dollars) per day, for the tourists. Also, local government workers are trying to help the Russians solve visa problems and book new flight tickets.Ship routes are expected to reopen after the wind weakens.

BEIJING/FUZHOU, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A plane chartered by the Chinese government flew 14 Chinese fishermen illegally seized by Japanese authorities from Japan to the southeast China port city of Fuzhou Monday afternoon, after China's repeated solemn representations.The fishermen were detained after the trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea last Tuesday. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fanapi is likely to land on the east coast of Taiwan on Sunday, said China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) in Beijing Friday.The center of the year' s 11th typhoon was about 700 km southeast from Hualien, in Taiwan, said a statement from the center.It was moving northwest towards Hualien and increasing in strength, the statement noted.The administration has issued a warning regarding huge waves which might strike off the Hualien coast, it said.On Sunday, the southern East China Sea might also produce waves of 4 to 6 meters high and waves in the Taiwan Strait might rise to 3 to 4 meters.Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces along the mainland's southeast coast would also be affected by the typhoon, the statement said.The statement warned all fishing boats in the region to take necessary precautions.The fishing season began in the East China Sea in mid-September and a large number of vessels are in the area.Additionally, Typhoon Fanapi could continue moving west after landing on Taiwan and strike Fujian and Guangdong, the statement said.Also on Friday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs launched an early-warning for disaster relief responses aimed at the typhoon's possible damages to the southeastern coastal areas.The ministry and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction instructed local governments to carefully keep track of the typhoon's movement and the changes in weather, and strengthen prevention measures for geological disasters and flooding in urban areas.Local governments were also urged to evacuate residents in high-risk areas while providing for their basic living necessities.
