HONG KONG, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's leading charity donor, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said Sunday it had donated another 16.3 million HK dollars (2.1 million U.S. dollars) for earthquake-hit area in northwestern China's Qinghai province to help disaster relief work.Together with the emergency donation of 2 million HK dollars made earlier, the Jockey Club contributed over 18.3 million HK dollars to support relief work for victims of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai on April 14.In a press release, the Jockey club said it achieved a net operating surplus of 15.36 million HK dollars on April 21 at the Happy Valley race meeting. All money had been passed to the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs for earthquake relief work.Chairman of the Jockey club, John C C Chan, said horse racing in Hong Kong not only is a form of entertainment, but is also a charitable undertaking which serves the people of Hong Kong and has a far-reaching significance to the community."We felt that by going ahead with our race meeting on April 21 and donating the net operating surplus to help Qinghai earthquake victims, we would be able to give strong support to the relief efforts at the same time as maintaining a stable contribution to the public purse," he said.In addition, the Jockey Club launched a public fund-raising drive between April 21 and 25. BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Industrial enterprises in China's 24 regions reported combined profits of 690.8 billion yuan (101.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter, more than double the figure of the same period last year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Wednesday.The NBS did not provide reasons for the 102.6-percent profit surge. The figure was down 21.1 percentage points for the first two months of the year, the statement said.Analysts attributed the growth to a low comparison base during the first quarter of 2009 when the country's economic growth was dragged down by the global economic downturn. The economic recovery, backed by government stimulus measures, also helped lift profits.The People's Bank of China, the central bank, said in a statement last week that industrial production in the first quarter had accelerated and profits of enterprises continued to expand on growing domestic demand.Altogether 38 of the 39 major industrial sectors saw year-on-year growth in profits, with profits of the steel industry up 3,380 percent and those of the power sector up 1,540 percent, the statement said.

URUMQI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China would spend 120 to 150 billion yuan (17.6 to 22 billion U.S. dollars) on transport infrastructure in its far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over the next five years, the regional government said Saturday.The money will be used to build new roads and renovate old ones to support Xinjiang's "leapfrog development" promised by the central government earlier this month, according to a statement issued after a conference of the Ministry of Transport and Xinjiang's regional government.The paved roads to be built or renovated will reach 75,000 to 80,000 kilometers in the region where there were just 15,000 kilometers of paved roads in place by the end of last year, said Song Airong, a regional Party official.Xinjiang's current 838 kilometers of highways will also be extended to 4,000 kilometers over the next five years, he said.The central government unveiled a policy package last Thursday to support the development of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, setting a goal that the region should undergo a spurt in development so that by 2015 its per capita gross domestic product could reach the national average.Under the package, fixed asset investment in Xinjiang in the next five years will be more than double the amount in the current five-year plan that ends this year.
