Hurricane Hunters have been flying in and out of Hurricane Laura continuously for days, getting a close-up look as the hurricane has rapidly intensified.In less than two days, Laura went from a tropical storm to a high-end Category 4. The storm is set to strike the Louisiana coast early Thursday morning.There are two Air Force Reserve groups that fly into hurricanes to send back data to the National Hurricane Center.In total, the Air Force Reserve utilizes 20 WC-130J aircraft that are equipped with palletized meteorological data-gathering instruments.According to the Hurricane Hunters, “The navigator keeps track of the aircraft's position and movement and monitors radar to avoid tornadic activity. The flight meteorologist acts as flight director and observes and records meteorological data at flight level using a computer that encodes weather data every 30 seconds. The weather reconnaissance loadmaster collects and records vertical meteorological data using a parachute-borne sensor known as a dropsonde. If you watch the Republican National Convention this week, you will hear claims from Republicans that Joe Biden, if elected, would hurt suburban living. So what are Republicans talking about? THE POLICYRepublicans are talking about the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule, which President Barack Obama and Biden updated in 2015. Biden has signaled he'd support even further updating of the rule. The rule basically says that if a town takes federal money, they should examine whether they engage in housing discrimination. Nothing is mandated, but it generally encourages an examination of whether zoning laws encourage developers to build large, family homes as opposed to more affordable options like an apartment or a condo. Trump disagrees with that policy and is against the rule. BATTLE FOR THE SUBURBSThe issue is being brought up by Republicans because for them, the election will be decided by the suburbs. Cities will generally vote for Biden, rural America will vote for Trump. How large suburbs vote will determine who is in the White House. Kim Stewart is an undecided voter living in a suburban community an hour outside of Washington D.C. "I love having the space, having a yard," Stewart said, talking about why she and her husband moved to the suburbs. When asked what she thought of more apartments being built in suburbs like hers, Stewart, admitted she didn't like it. "It would make me feel a little uncomfortable. We enjoy the quiet," Stewart said. THE OTHER SIDEThe Biden campaign says what Trump is saying about Joe Biden and the suburbs is a smear campaign, contending the rule is not "abolishing the suburbs" as Trump has said. There is also another side. Shantai High is a resident in a D.C. low income housing community. She's lived in her apartment for nearly 19 years. She says everyone in a low income housing would like more affordable options, in cities and in suburbs. "It’s tough everywhere. In a little more than a decade, more than 40 million diabetics worldwide could be left without insulin, the drug that is needed to help control the disease. It's a dire prediction from a study published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology that could have life-altering consequences. Health expert Dr. Dahlia Wachs likened insulin to being the key to a door. In most people, it's a naturally occurring hormone the pancreas secretes when we eat sugar so that it can go from the bloodstream and into our cells.But it's a different matter for the millions of people whose bodies either don't make insulin or who have insulin resistance."Type 1 diabetics — they are very dependent on insulin," Wachs said. "They don't make insulin. They get very skinny and we have to give them insulin. There really isn't a lot of other treatments for these Type 1 diabetics.”A shortage of insulin in drug form poses major challenges. "So those with Type 2 diabetes, many of them can take pills, but if they are in poor control we have to give them insulin," Wachs said.Wachs said insulin is expensive to make. She says only three major pharmaceutical companies make it. And the demand isn't the highest here in the United States but other parts of the world, including Africa and Asia. However, the U.S. will have the third highest number of people living with diabetes by 2030.Diabetes is growing at an epidemic rate in the U.S. More than 12 percent of the adult population in Nevada is diabetic, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Every year, 10,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated 75,000 have diabetes and don't know it. "So what can we do to prevent the shortage? Well, try to prevent diabetes," she said.That means controlling obesity, exercising and eating healthy. 1943

If it's been a while since you've booked a flight, travel insurance is that thing that pops up at the end of a sale.“At the end, they’re going to say, ‘Hey, this many people bought travel insurance, don’t you want to buy travel insurance too?’ And I think a lot of people generally, before COVID, would think, ‘Oh they’re trying to upset me and move along,’” said Michael Parrish DuDell, chief strategy officer for Couponfollow.com. “But what we’re seeing, in fact, is that more and more people are saying, ‘I want that insurance I want to protect my future travel.’"Couponfollow.com was designed, DuDell said, to save consumers both time and money. He says the company is always asking consumers about their money and how they spend it.“As we looked closer at how people are traveling, where they were spending their money, where they were allocating their time, we found these little niche interesting areas,” DuDell said.He says those areas include things like travel insurance.“What we found is that 75% of people who had already booked flights had purchased trip insurance. That was a staggering number that is a 55% increase than what is thought of as the norm,” DuDell said.So, why the increase? Travel anxiety amid the pandemic is likely a big part of it.“There is so much uncertainty in the world right now, and of course that’s around the pandemic, but there’s other kinds of uncertainty too and I think people feel like they’re taking a strong risk in general when they’re traveling,” DuDell said. "So if they can mitigate risk in other areas, they’re willing to do that, to spend the money behind it.”Leslie Tayne, a financial attorney, author and frequent flier said, “There are a lot of caveats to whether travel insurance for airline purposes makes sense right now and frankly because the airlines allow you to make changes without a cost and last minute, there’s really almost no reason why you would get travel insurance.”She says these days, airlines are more accommodating than ever. And because there's been so much industry disruption surrounding travel, the future is being rewritten now.“I definitely believe they’re going to rewrite the travel insurance, they’re being investigated right now,” Tayne said. “It's being taken up in Congress in terms of the validity of the travel insurance and there’s some concern that travel insurance might be what’s termed either a ‘scam’ or a ‘money-making proposition’ that’s not really beneficial to the consumer.”In March, the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy launched an investigation into whether travel insurance provided any “meaningful protection” for consumers. The investigation was spurred amid the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, when many travelers were canceling trips as states began implementing stay-at-home orders.“The evidence shows consumers are purchasing standard travel insurance products, thinking they will be covered if they cancel their trip because of coronavirus,” Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), the subcommittee’s chair, said in March. “Yet, companies like Allianz, Travel Guard, and Generali are refusing to cover those claims. In the process they are encouraging dangerous travel.”So, when it comes to whether you "need" that insurance, Tayne says weigh your risks, consider where you're going and what you'll be doing.“My recommendation is to try to understand what the restrictions are and what you could use the insurance for when would it apply to you,” Tayne said.Tayne said if you're in a situation where it makes sense, don't make an insurance decision on emotion. (KGTV) - Residents in one Imperial Beach neighborhood are hoping surveillance video will help put an end to an "endless" cycle of graffiti.In an alley off 14th Street, Gary Copeland looks at his neighbor's brand new fence and can only shake his head."It's disgusting we have to look at all this graffiti," said Copeland.On Monday around 4:30 a.m., a neighbor's motion-activated camera captured a man in a cap shaking a can of spray paint. In the next video recorded, one can hear the sound of spray paint before the man emerges from the dark. Hours later and blocks away, a camera in another alley captured a man without a cap spray-painting a similar tag on the wall of another home."It's a nuisance is what it is," said Copeland.Copeland's family has lived at his home for some four decades."You can see they've tagged my wall a few times. We've repainted, but they came back and re-tagged it," said Copeland.Copeland says his wall has been hit three times in the past six months."It's never-ending deal ... there's always tagging. Up and down the alley all these fences are tagged ...
