SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County law enforcement officials say overdose deaths from fentanyl have sharply increased since last year. The San Diego County District Attorney Office said in the first six months of 2020, there have been 203 fentanyl-related deaths: 119 have been confirmed and 84 are pending confirmation. The victims range in age from 17 to 66 years old.In all of 2019, there were 152 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the county."This alarming uptick demonstrates that dealers continue cutting various illegal drugs with fentanyl and now more than ever it’s a recipe for death," said District Attorney Summer Stephan. "The public needs to be aware of the danger of using any controlled substance even if packaged like a harmless medicinal pill. Higher overdose numbers tell us there’s likely more product on the street in San Diego that may be laced with deadly fentanyl. I’m urging you to share this potentially life-saving message with your loved ones today."The DA's office says it is prosecuting several cases, including: In January, a 28-year-old smoked a powdery substance given to him by a friend. His mother found him unresponsive in the living room of her home. He was pronounced dead from a fentanyl overdose. In February, a 20-year-old suffering from anxiety, consumed a counterfeit oxycodone pill before going to bed. His roommates found him dead in the morning from a fentanyl overdose. In May, a 19-year-old purchased two Percocets from a friend. He consumed both pills and subsequently died from an overdose. He had fentanyl in his system at the time of his deathFentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and up to 50 times more potent than heroin, according to officials. Even in doses as little as two milligrams, the drug is lethal for most people. Treating fentanyl overdoses often requires additional naloxone, the drug used to reverse opioid overdoses, to reverse the effects of the drug.Anyone who is need of help with drug addiction can call the San Diego County Access and Crisis Line 888-724-7240 or 2-1-1 San Diego at any time daily. 2113

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pride Month comes to a close, the San Diego Unified School District is working to make sure LGBTQ students feel supported year-round. The district's curriculum is becoming more inclusive. School can be a tough time for many students, including those who identify with the LGBTQIA community."In a 2017 report, a national study, 82% of our LGBTQ students reported hearing anti-LGBTQ remarks," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "Seven in 10 reported being called names or threatened during their school day."Gloria spearheaded Assembly Bill 493. It would mandate LGBTQ identity training for educators, grades 7-12. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law last fall.Although school is out for summer break, the San Diego Unified School District is showing its support. The Pride and Transgender flags, among others, were raised outside of the district's office.SDUSD has implemented a curriculum that will help teachers and students. Each module contains four lessons. It comes equipped with terminology and LGBTQIA history."What we found out as a district, is that these students are hearing about these issues and these people for the first time because a lot of our educators have been ill-prepared to have these discussions in classrooms," says Ebonee Weathers with the Youth Advocacy Dept.Weathers also notes that it's important for educators to build relationships and empower students, so they feel safe and comfortable in school settings. 1478

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County Supervisors Wednesday sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom asking him to take a second look at San Diego, potentially allowing shuttered businesses to reopen amid COVID-19. In the letter, Supervisors Kristin Gaspar, Jim Desmond, and Councilmember Chris Cate of the sixth district said Newsom’s “one-size-fits-all approach to closing entire business sectors is misguided as evidenced by the many sectors in San Diego forced to close their doors again despite not having contributed at all to the rise in our local cases.”Supervisors also pushed the governor to give more control to local leaders and health officials. RELATED: San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, other local leaders take action to keep restaurants open“It is time to give local control of this public health emergency to the elected leaders and clinical team closest to the people so that we can begin community specific healing based on local data,” the letter reads. The letter was sent after San Diego was added to the state’s watch list, forcing some businesses to halt indoor operations.Following the new rules, Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed an emergency executive order making it easier for restaurants to operate outdoors.RELATED: San Diego to close some businesses as COVID-19 cases spikeThe Poway City Council also voted to provide picnic tables to local restaurants in an effort to help businesses move outside.Read the full letter below: 1446

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans Friday unveiled a new study aimed at reducing delays on freeways throughout San Diego County. The study is being held on State Route 78 between Vista Village Drive and Interstate 15.In order to reduce stop-and-go traffic, the study will use seven electronic speed limit signs that will tell drivers the speed that will optimize their commute.“The aim of synchronizing traffic is to gradually slow traffic in advance of a bottleneck in order to keep traffic moving and avoiding stop and go traffic,” said State Route 78 Corridor Director Allan Kosup. “Essentially we are asking motorists to slow down to go faster.”Kosup equated the idea to pouring water into a funnel. Pouring it fast causes it to overflow, while pouring it more slowly gets all the water through efficiently. The signs will display advisory speeds at increments and decrements of 5 miles per hour based on traffic conditions.Drivers expressed skepticism at the program working."Even if I was to go that speed, the other people would be honking their horns behind me," said Michael Ciuzak, who said he tries to avoid the 78 on his commute to San Marcos. Caltrans noted that the speeds are not enforceable, but should help reduce delays. The six-week long study begins on Monday, March 19.Those interested can view real-time results of the study here. The study is being conducted in partnership with the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California Berkley. 1513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As President Trump and Democratic lawmakers battle over funding for the president's border wall project, construction at the border is already slated to begin early this year.Texas-based construction company SLSCO was awarded 7 million last month for a series of wall projects along the U.S.-Mexico border in California beginning in February. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro sectors.A Border Patrol spokesperson said construction of a primary pedestrian wall was already approved, though could not comment as to whether secondary wall construction was previously approved or tied directly to President Trump's Executive Order for a continuous border wall.RELATED: Roughly 150 migrants attempt to climb border fence, throw rocks at Border Patrol agentsIn February 2019, construction on 14 miles of secondary wall will start adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently underway. That primary fence construction began in June about one-half mile from the Pacific Ocean, extending east to the base of Otay Mountain. SLSCO is also in charge of that project. Then in July 2019, construction on 15 miles of pedestrian replacement wall will start, with 11 miles in Calexico, three miles in Tecate, and one mile in Andrade. The Border Patrol spokesperson was unable to say exactly where construction would take place in these areas.10News reached out to SLSCO for comment on their upcoming wall projects and will update with their comments. 1606
