The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown released a list of names Tuesday of clergy personnel credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor and who were reported to authorities. After a thorough investigation, Bishop George V. Murray, S.J., accepted the accusations as credible, according to the news release sent by the diocese.“I am very sorry that the Church has failed to act aggressively to eliminate this evil. I humbly ask forgiveness from the victims and their families for the grave mistakes the Church has made," said Bishop Murray in the release.Through the investigation, Bishop Murray said, “that as painful as the process of voluntary disclosure of names is for parishioners where these men served, this is one way that we can offer support and dignity to the survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their families.”The following is a list of clergy members who had credible, substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor made against them, according to the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown: 1022
The death of another Fort Hood soldier is under investigation after he was found unresponsive at a nearby lake.On Friday, July 17 at 12:07 a.m., deputy’s with the Bell County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the area of the Stillhouse Hollow Lake Dam after fishermen in a boat located what they believed to be a body in the water at the base of the dam.Upon arrival, deputy’s found the body 26-year-old Pvt. Mejhor Morta was located in the vicinity of Stillhouse Hollow Lake — located about 15 miles east of the Army base.An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin.A preliminary autopsy shows the cause of death to be consistent with drowning, but at this time, a full autopsy report has not been completed or released by the Medical Examiner’s Office in Dallas, Texas.Morta's body was found just weeks after officials found the dismembered remains of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen — a soldier stationed on Fort Hood who went missing in April. Officials have not said that the two cases are linked.Morta was from Pensacola, Florida, and entered the Army in September 2019, as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle mechanic. He has been assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since May 2020.Friends of Morta say his family is from the Philippines."I reached out to his sister today and they are currently in the Philippines," said Hunter Proffitt, a friend of Morta. "He literally came over here, he joined the U.S. Army to help move his family over here. He wanted to move his family. He wanted to make a better life for himself and then we find out that this happens."The Bell County Sheriff’s Department continues their investigation and no other information is available for release at this time. This story was originally published by Sydney Isenberg on KXXV in Waco, Texas. 1856
The FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee panel has endorsed a second COVID-19 vaccine in the United States. Now the FDA is expected to act quickly to authorize the Moderna vaccine for emergency use and keep it on schedule to be distributed to patients across the country as early next week. The panel voted 20 yeses and one abstain.WATCH RECAP:With the panel recommending EUA, the FDA as a whole would then need to file its own EUA approval. The final step would be a formal recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that Americans should receive the vaccine.Last Thursday, the committee voted in favor of granting EUA to Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. By Monday, it was being administered across the country. The panel's meeting comes days after a key FDA report upheld the safety and efficacy results of the Moderna vaccine's Phase III trials. Those statistics showed that the vaccine was 95% effective with no severe side-effects."FDA has determined that the Sponsor has provided adequate information to ensure the vaccine's quality and consistency for authorization of the product under an EUA," the report said.An approval of Moderna's vaccine would immediately boost the supply levels of COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. Millions of doses are ready to be shipped across the country as soon as approval is granted. The arrival of COVID-19 vaccines comes amid the bleakest stretch to date in the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. is currently seeing the highest level of new cases (213.000) and deaths (2,500) each day, according to seven-day rolling averages totaled by the COVID Tracking Project. More Americans than ever are also battling the virus in a hospital (113,000). 1725
The first person known to be cured of HIV infection, Timothy Ray Brown, has died. He was 54.Brown was long known as “the Berlin patient” for where his historic treatment took place. He died Tuesday at his home in Palm Springs, California, according to his partner. The cause was a return of the cancer that originally prompted the unusual bone marrow and cell transplants Brown received in 2007 and 2008, which for years seemed to have eliminated both his leukemia and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.His case inspired more research toward a cure, something that many scientists had thought impossible until his example proved that it was. 645
The Florida House on Wednesday passed legislation that would impose new restrictions on firearm sales and allow some teachers and staff to carry guns in school. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act was spurred by the February 14 shooting in Parkland, Florida. The bill, which passed 67-50, now goes to Gov. Rick Scott. He has 15 days to sign it.Earlier in the day, Scott expressed reservations about the provision to arm school personnel. He vowed to review the bill "line by line" before signing it."The group that I'm going to be talking to -- the groups that I care most about right now because it impacted them so much -- is the families," Scott said.Speaking on behalf of the 17 families who lost loved ones in the shooting, Andrew Pollack, whose daughter was killed, urged Scott to sign the bill."We stand united in asking him to sign this historic bill into law," he said after the bill's passage."We thank the House and Senate for voting in favor of protecting our children, but more needs to be done and it's important for the country to unite in the same way the 17 families united in support of this bill."Scott also concerned about waiting period 1187
