A train carrying dozens of Republican members of Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, to their legislative retreat in West Virginia hit a truck on January 31, 2017 leaving one person dead.Wednesday the National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary investigation into the crash.They said around 11:15 a.m., a 2018 Freightliner truck equipped with a McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing refuse body was traveling southbound on Lanetown Road in Albemarle County near Crozet, Virginia.The refuse truck, operated by Time Disposal LLC, had a 30-year-old driver and two passengers as it drove towards a highway–railroad grade crossing, later identified. The crossing is active and includes advance warning signs and pavement markings on its approach, the National Transportation Safety Board said. The crossing is also equipped with crossbuck signs, warning lights, bells and gates.As the truck neared the highway a westbound Congressional Special Amtrak train was approaching the highway–railroad grade crossing.The NTSB said the train’s lead locomotive was equipped with a forward-facing track image camera. Data that was taken from the camera showed that as the crossing came into view, the gates were down and the truck was on the grade crossing. Witnesses to the crash reported that the refuse truck entered the crossing after the gates were down.The train’s recorder showed the Amtrak train was traveling about 61 mph when the engineer applied emergency braking. The train struck the left rear of the refuse truck, causing the truck to rotate counterclockwise and then collide with a railroad signal next to the tracks. The refuse body separated from the truck, and the truck’s two passengers were ejected, according to the NTSB.As a result of the crash, one passenger in the truck died. The other truck passenger had serious injuries and the driver of the truck had minor injuries. Three Amtrak crewmembers and three train passengers sustained minor injuries, the NTSB said.NTSB investigators and Albemarle County Police Department officials and the Federal Bureau of Investigation documented the crash scene and the characteristics of the crossing, the train and the refuse truck. The track and operational characteristics of the crossing signals were also examined and documented.The crash remains under investigation.  2354

A new social media trend has one West Michigan photographer capturing the reactions of two people meeting for the very first time in a hybrid blind date/photoshoot.Hailey Estill started shooting photos professionally just a few months ago. She has been working to get her business Candid Captures by Hayley off the ground in a few different ways.Estill graduated from college with a degree in psychology and has been looking into how she can meld her passion for creative photography with her knowledge of how the human mind works.And so, in a poetic meshing of her different skill sets, she began arranging and shooting what she calls "stranger shoots".Estill says she is "interested in both the art and the psyche behind two people meeting and getting intimate pictures taken.”On Monday evening she let FOX 17 tag along on her latest shoot.“They're all gonna have different outcomes, because you're just doing it with completely different people every time,” Estill said.At this shoot, a man and a woman from Grand Rapids would meet for the very first time, as Estill hangs back and takes a series of photos that could easily be confused for an engagement shoot.Danny and Caitlin, both in their early twenties, walked towards each other with their faces covered by bandannas.Estill says she will often give the participants prompts while shooting, telling them to whisper different trivia facts about themselves to one another.“So I’m going to tell you guys to go in the middle of the road there and slow dance for a minute," Estill told Danny and Caitlin during their photoshoot at Crescent Park in downtown Grand Rapids."And then Danny, you go first and tell her 3 things about you. And after, I want you to tell him 3 things about you."While Estill says not every couple ends up hitting it off right away, Danny and Caitlin seemed quite smitten.“I think I'm a pretty outgoing person, easy to get along with. So this wasn't super out of my comfort zone. I'm pretty good right now, I don't know about him," Caitlin said after the photoshoot finished up."The entire time I was kind of just like, Wow, she's beautiful. Like, I can't wait to get to know her," Danny added. “I hope there's something here… I mean, I have good feelings about this.”The pair exchanged contact info before the sun went down.“He walked her to her car, so I don't know what’s happening," Estill said after the couple had departed.Estill says she doesn't see her playing cupid as a long-term career path, but for now, she is enjoying it and looking forward to booking more "stranger shoots" in the near future.She said, “You just never know how people are going to react. A Mississippi school district has apologized and a high school band director has been suspended after the band staged a halftime skit that depicted police being held at gunpoint.The controversial skit came as the Forest Hill High School band from Jackson performed Friday during a football game against Brookhaven High School to the south. It shocked many at the game in Brookhaven, where just six days earlier two police officers were killed in a shootout with a suspect."I was sad because of what happened last weekend, and it felt like they were making fun of it," Sarah McDonald, a Brookhaven High School student, told CNN affiliate WJTV. 650

A New Jersey state trooper admitted to the state's attorney general that he pulled over women while on duty in an attempt to ask women out on a date, WNBC-TV reported. The trooper, 37-year-old Marquice Prather, pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of invasion of privacy, tampering with physical evidence and falsifying or tampering with records. He had been suspended without pay since December after accusations mounted against the trooper. WNBC reported that Prather will be banned from public office, and likely will face probation for the charges. Authorities told WNBC that Prather tampered evidence by turning off his microphone, as the trooper claimed the microphone malfunctioned. Prather was accused by authorities of going through personal information and photos on the cellphones of female motorists. Prather was also accused of copying intimate photos and videos of the women, and he would solicit the women to go on a date with him. 1028
