OMAHA, Neb.  - The DEA is warning police and parents to be on the lookout for marijuana and methamphetamine laced candy this Halloween.The DEA and police agencies throughout the country have seen an increase of seizures of drug-laced edibles, including but not limited to chocolates, suckers and gummies. The DEA's Omaha Division has not identified any specific threats but issued an advisory.The items are often professionally packaged and can easily be mistaken for regular candy or baked goods. Last year the DEA found marijuana-laced candies sold in packages labeled; Munchy Way, 3 Rastateers, Twixed, Keef Kat and Rasta Reese's; had been collected during Halloween.Signs of marijuana or meth-laced candy include unusual wrapping, appearance, unusual colors, odd smell, misspelled candy labels, or candy or food that is unwrapped or unmarked.Parents and caregivers should seek immediate medical attention if a child ingests drug-laced candy and then contact local police. 988

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- It can be easy to take the ability to read for granted, but there's nothing easy about admitting you can't read, especially for adults. Just ask Gary Swimpson."I have a 7-year-old grandson that can read better than me," he says, "it hurts. I'm 61 years old, I'm supposed to be reading to him, but I can't let that get me down. I have to keep pushing forward."Pushing forward is Gary's mantra. He exudes positivity, but it wasn't always that way. "As far as my background, where I come from, 'the hood' and all that, you know I made a lot of bad choices coming up and so I'm trying to do the right thing in life for the first time in my life." He says the hardest part of his journey has been having the strength to continue pushing himself to do it. "When you never read growing up and now you're in your fifties or sixties and you try it, it's a challenge."When Gary moved from Los Angeles to Oceanside, he decided it was time for a fresh start, beginning about a year and a half ago with the Oceanside READS Learning Center.Chelsea Genack Eggli, the literacy coordinator for Oceanside Public Library, said, "It takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of strength to go back to school when somebody is older in life," she says.Before the pandemic, literacy tutors met with adult learners in person, one-on-one. Now they meet via Zoom."He was having a hard time seeing his growth. I saw it because when he came he wasn't reading at all, and then he read a chapter book," says Chelsea. Gary says, "It made me just feel so good," when he saw the numbers on an assessment showing his progress.Now, not only is Gary reading, he's also writing poetry for a contest --- an ode to Oceanside. When asked what he'd like to say to others who could benefit from the program, Gary says, "Well, we have always heard that it's never too late right? It's how much you believe in yourself." He goes on to say, "There's always a chance to get your life together as long as you're breathing. It worked for me and I'm really grateful, and anybody can do it. On Wednesday morning, a viral post on Twitter claimed that there were more ballots cast in Wisconsin than registered voters. As the Wisconsin Elections Commission helped explain, that claim is not supported by data.The tweet, which has since been removed, claimed that there were only 3,129,000 registered voters in Wisconsin. However, that number represents the registered voters in the state from the 2018 midterms.After the tweet went viral, the Wisconsin Election Commission tweeted an explanation. The election commission said the State of Wisconsin had 3,684,726 active registered voters as of Nov. 1. That is higher than the number of ballots counted so far, which is 3,240,275.The WEC also pointed out that Wisconsin allows for same-day voter registration, which could further increase the number of total voters.The tweet with the misleading claim has since been removed from Twitter, as the social media platform says it "is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process." 1018

Officials are urging residents of Texas' capital city to cut water consumption by at least 15 percent so water treatment plants can catch up with demand as historic flooding continues to muck up lakes that supply the region's tap water."Immediate action is needed to avoid running out of water," Austin leaders said Monday in a statement. "Emergency conservation now required."A boil-water advisory remains in effect Tuesday, as the city works to filter "much higher levels of debris, silt, and mud" from the Highland Lakes.Reservoir water in Texas' fourth-biggest city already was reaching "minimal levels" on Monday, according to the statement.
