BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Putin said here on Tuesday that Russia and China are working on a huge oil and gas cooperation project.     In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Putin said the two countries have signed a 20-year oil supply agreement and laid more than 2,000 kilometers of crude oil pipelines for this. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (L) is interviewed by Peng Shujie (2nd R), deputy chief editor of Xinhua News Agency, Ma Li (3rd R), deputy chief editor of People's Daily, and Shui Junyi, TV host from China Central Television (CCTV), in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 13, 2009China is also laying on its side the corresponding pipeline, he said, adding the two counties are studying the feasibility of building a refinery in China.     Putin said as the world's nuclear power, Russia keeps an open mind towards cooperation in this field.     "Russia and China are very active in the nuclear energy cooperation, "Putin said, citing the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant as a good example.     Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, located in the Lianyungang city in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, is so far the largest nuclear power cooperative program between China and Russia.     Putin said Russia is willing to supply coal to China and the supply is increasing rapidly, noting China has good equipment and technology on coal processing.     As for natural gas cooperation, Putin said negotiations are underway and would certainly yield satisfactory results.     On the specific ways of gas supply and the pricing, he said those issues should be resolved at the enterprise level.     "The most important thing is that Russia and China have the need and capacity to enhance cooperation and the two economies are complementary to each other," Putin said, adding such cooperation would last for decades.     With regard to the problems and frictions in the bilateral trade, Putin said those small problems would not impact the general strategic cooperation between the two countries.     He took the "gray custom clearance" as an example. It was the name given to the illegal practice of getting items across the border without official customs approval.     The illegal practice would make the government unable to supervise domestic industries and lead to bankruptcies and unemployment, which might cause more troubles to the society against the backdrop of the financial crisis, he said.     Putin called upon the two countries to establish a set of unified rules, which would be obeyed by both sides, so as to achieve a just, sound and civilized mechanism of cooperation.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo met U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday to exchange views on bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues of common concern.     Speaking to reporters before their talks, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said he was pleased to visit the United States at the invitation of Speaker Pelosi, noting that the visit was the first by a top Chinese legislator over the past 20 years.     "The purpose of my visit is intended to promote further growth of China-U.S. relations," Wu said, describing the relationship as one of the most important, dynamic and promising bilateral ties in the world.     He expressed the belief that his U.S. trip will inject new impetus to the growth of China-U.S. relations. BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- China has never placed any restriction on pork imports from the European Union (E.U.), and its demand for health certificate from the E.U. imported pork was needed to prevent the spread of A/H1N1 flu, said Yu Taiwei, head of China's quality watchdog's food safety export and import bureau, on Wednesday.     General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) launched on Sept. 18 a measure requiring an additional testing on all pork meat from five countries including Denmark, France, Italy and Spain.     The E.U.'s health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou was reported Wednesday as having interpreted China's requirement for strengthening inspection on A/H1N1 virus as "being protectionism".     "We still allow these countries to export pork to China, but only ask for a more intensified inspection," said Yu.     Every country should guarantee the quality securities of its export products, which is its responsibility, according to Yu.     China is a major consumer of meat products. It imported 1.84 million tonnes last year. The country has also become the world's leading meat producer, whose pork output stood at 44.59 million tonnes in 2008.

CHENGDU, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's relatively poor western regions are to receive 296 billion yuan (about 43.3 billion U.S. dollars) of investment through 551 projects signed Friday with investors from both China and abroad.     Those deals were sealed at the tenth Western China International Economy and Trade Fair in Chengdu, provincial capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.     The region has 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, with a combined population of about 370 million.     Chinese investors contributed 539 of the 551 projects, involving 288.9 billion yuan of investment. The rest 12 projects would be invested by foreign contractors, involving in around 1 billion U.S. dollars of investment.     Sectors involving local resources, equipment manufacturing, service and new and high technology were investors' favorite target areas.     According to agreements signed here, German industrial conglomerate Siemens would spend 30 million yuan in Chengdu to setup a "Global IT Operation Center", intending to provide better IT operation support for its customers.     Meanwhile, Taiwan's Foxconn Group, the world's top maker of outsourced electronics, would invest 1 billion dollars to build an industrial base in Chengdu, setting up production lines for products like LED-TV, LCD module, LED backlight module and LCD package. The new base will also develop software and sell 3C digital products as wells.
