SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As wildfires continue to burn in California, researchers say they may be adding fuel to another emergency: the pandemic.Parts of the Golden State have been buried in a blanket of smoke for weeks. Wildfire smoke is a mixture of many pollutants, but the majority consists of tiny particulate matter called PM2.5, which can also be produced by cars and power plants.“It’s a threat amplifier,” said Dr. Abisola Olulade of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. In April, researchers at Harvard found that just a small increase in this kind of air pollution led to an 8% jump in the death rate from COVID-19.Studies have shown that air pollution from these tiny particles can increase the risk of death in older adults from other causes, but the Harvard researchers found the increase from COVID-19 was 20 times larger. Why? The most widely accepted theory is that smoke particles, which can burrow deep inside the lungs and enter the bloodstream, can add a layer of health complications for people already fighting the virus.“People that are already fighting off a COVID-19 infection already have compromised heart and lung function if they have severe illness,” Dr. Olulade said. “So that can increase their susceptibility to the effects of wildfires.”The particles can contribute to more inflammation and potentially lead to blood clotting, she said.“Any chink in the armor, so to speak, is going to really make people have trouble maintaining” the body’s stressful fight against the virus, said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego.Another theory from early COVID-19 research that hasn’t been peer-reviewed: smoke particles could allow the virus to travel farther and survive longer, potentially allowing it to spread to more people. Both Dr. Ramers and Dr. Olulade said there was less research to support this theory.“What makes the sky look hazy when there’s smoke? It’s particles. So it's conceivable, again this is kind of conjecture, but it's conceivable with more particles in the air then yes the virus can latch onto those particles a bit more,” said Dr. Ramers.Doctors say there’s stronger evidence to suggest that wildfire smoke could help the virus enter a healthy person’s body. Not only does smoke wear down the protective lining of our airways, it stimulates certain receptors in the lungs -- the exact receptors that the spike proteins of the coronavirus use to get inside cells.“The virus binds to those ACE2 receptors, so if you have more of them, it can increase the viral load,” said Dr. Olulade. All kinds of air pollution put us at greater risk from respiratory diseases like coronavirus, not just wildfires. But one thing is for sure: Californians have been exposed to a lot of smoke lately.Since the beginning of the year, wildfires in California have burned more than 3 million acres, according to CAL Fire. That’s an area larger than the entire County of San Diego. 2929

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Concerns continue to grow amid reports that President Trump may allow border officials to ban US citizens suspected of having coronavirus from re-entering the country.Five years ago, Les and Marilyn Widd retired and made a big move, buying an oceanfront home in Rosarito, Mexico. That dream retirement has suddenly been marred by worries about COVID-19 and a possible presidential action. According to published reports, President Trump is weighing rules to allow border officials to temporarily block an American citizen or legal permanent resident from entering, if there is reason to believe the person has coronavirus."Absolutely upsetting, absolutely upsetting," said Les Widd, 70.Details about the possible plan are unknown, but Widd has heard enough."It's violating your constitutional rights to receive treatment in your own country," said Widd.Widd says if either of them were to develop symptoms, they would have few options. Their hospital in Rosarito isn't accepting COVID-19 patients."In Tijuana hospitals, they are absorbing everything from surrounding towns. They're at the limit. Difficult to get a bed there," said Widd. Both the Widds have go-to hospitals in San Diego where they've received past treatments. Both are covered under Medicare, and they say they have a right to use it, especially during a pandemic."We worked all of our lives and paid into it. We should be able to use our Medicare," said Widd.He also questions how effective a border ban would be."If push comes to shove, I will try any way possible to get over the border ... People will lie about their condition to get across the border," said Widd.Various estimates place the number of Americans living in Rosarito between 12,000 and 15,000 people. 1762

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California officials said Friday that a technical glitch caused data on hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 tests to go unreported.Despite the inaccurate data, officials say they are still seeing a trend showing a decrease in case rates. Hospitalization and death data, however, is collected differently and unaffected by the glitch.According to the state, the data system they use failed and that led to inaccurate case numbers and case positivity rates. That failure prevented counties from having some of the data they need to monitor and respond to the virus in local communities, like contact tracing. The state says that about two weeks ago, a server outage created a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system. At the same time, they realized they weren't getting data from one of the largest commercial reporting labs for about five days.California Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly says the issues have been fixed."We expect that over the next 24 to 48 hours that the backlog that's between 250,000 to 300,000 cases will be resolved, giving us a better sense of the number of tests that were delayed," Ghaly told reporters on Friday. "We are reporting this data to the counties based on the date the specimen was collected so we can attribute it to the appropriate date."The state says the system was not built for the volume of data it's receiving. It's putting new systems in place and has created a backup system to double-check the data and reports.California's County Monitoring Watch List was paused last week so that the glitch does not play a role in decision making about county statuses.Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered an investigation into what happened with the reporting system. 1764

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customers at two Walmart stores in the North County say they received hundreds of dollars in fake bills.Last Thursday night, Billy Wagner went to the Walmart on Center Drive in San Marcos and cashed out a ,000 money transfer from a friend on the east coast."Watched the lady count the money on the counter three times," said Wagner. On the same night - and about five miles away in Escondido - John Whittingham stopped by the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Valley Parkway to cash a check, receiving four 0 bills. RELATED: Woman frustrated after receiving counterfeit money at Oceanside gas stationThe next day, after he handed over half the bills to pay for a self-storage unit, a manager broke the news. "You won't believe it. These two 0 bills are counterfeit. We marked them, and they're not coming in," said Whittingham.Meanwhile, Wagner's bills were also raising suspicions."I couldn't them unstuck to count them," said Wagner. Wagner took a closer look and saw that eight of his ten bills had the same serial number. He says his bank confirmed they were fake.RELATED: Girls Scouts cheated with counterfeit money"Disbelief. It was extreme disbelief," said Wagner, who filed a report with the sheriff's department. He says there was disbelief, partly because the counterfeit bills look very real except for a few differences."There is no watermark on the fakes. They are also less gritty when you touch them," said Wagner.Of course, the identical serial numbers give the fakes away. 10News compared the bills received by both men, and those fake serial numbers matched. Questions linger. Where did the money come from? How many other customers got the bills? And how did the money slip past Walmart's safeguards?"I never figured going into Walmart, counterfeit money would be floating," said Whittingham.Whittingham did get his money back from Walmart. Wagner is set to meet with a manager at the San Marcos store this week. 10news reached out to Walmart corporate and are awaiting their response. 2039
