SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A proposed homeless housing project in the Mission Hills community might face a snag. Mission Hills Heritage is working on getting a historic designation for the old Mission Hills library on Washington Street. The building is one of several sites the city is considering for a public housing project. The city is looking to build permanent supportive housing. Permanent supportive housing is not a shelter. It's a space helped paid for by rental assistance and offers supportive services to assist homeless people with disabilities or homeless families with disabled family members. Barry Hager, with Mission Hills Heritage, says although there is some backlash from the community about the homeless housing project, his group is merely fighting to save history. They are not taking sides on the homeless housing issue, but their problem is the project would require the demolition of the building. He says the building is worth preserving because it was built in the early 1960s and is a prime example of mid-century modern or mid-century style architecture. “It’s really the only mid-century building in the commercial core area of Mission Hills,” Hager said. “This is really a preservation project, and preservation issue, not an issue about homeless housing.” A city says they are working to find out how a historical designation could impact any plans for the site, but for now, they are proceeding as planned. They sent the following statement: “Cities up and down California are facing a housing crisis. Here in San Diego, we are encouraging all types of housing, including permanent supportive housing. We are in the process of finalizing the RFP for several city-owned properties we identified in early May for permanent supportive housing, including the old Mission Hills Library. (CNN) -- A fragment of wood believed to be from Jesus' manger is back in the Holy Land just in time for Christmas.The tiny inches long relic was first taken out of the Middle East in the 7th century when St. Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem, donated it to Pope Theodore I. It remained in Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore until now.The wooden relic arrived on Saturday at its permanent home in Bethlehem in time for Advent and the beginning of the Christmas season. Many Christians say it represents the very essence of their faith."It touches me so deeply, so deeply because I really can find the little child Jesus inside, I really can find his presence and it's like the cradle is moving into my heart," Barbara Boterberg told CNN at a special service at the Our Lady of Peace Chapel at the Notre Dame Jerusalem center to commemorate its arrival.Boterberg, a Christian living in Israel, says she has been praying for 40 years to see a piece of Jesus' crib return to its rightful place in the Middle East."Since it's here my heart is jumping all the time with joy, that God became a man humble enough to sleep in a manger," added Boterberg.Pope Francis allowed the relic to be returned to the region, according to Father Francesco Patton, Custos of the Holy Land.He told CNN that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas had been asking the Pope to return the stone and wood manger to Bethlehem for at least one Christmas season for years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four people were arrested following a Border Patrol chase that made its way through San Diego Wednesday afternoon. The chase started after noon on Highway 94 in East County after the driver failed to stop for an immigration inspection at the Border Patrol checkpoint in Jamul. The agency said the chase made its way through the county before ending in San Diego's Legacy Walk neighborhood. The four suspects then stopped and fled the vehicle near San Pasqual Street and Logan Avenue. According to the agency, the suspects then ran into the Mountain View Beckworth Library where they were taken into custody. All four suspects were in the U.S. illegally, Border Patrol says. 704

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two people were seriously injured and a third person is dead after a shooting in a Chula Vista Costco parking lot Monday afternoon, according to police. The incident happened about 12:30 p.m. near the Costco at 1100 Broadway at Naples St. Other nearby stores include Walmart and Petco. Chula Vista police said a woman and her new boyfriend were putting away groceries in their car in the parking lot when the suspect approached from behind, shot both victims several times before turning the gun on himself. “I was about to pull in to the parking lot, a parking space; I thought they were fighting or something," said Carlos, a witness who did not provide his last name.Chris Anthes, who witnessed the incident unfold, told 10News, “The woman was up, like she was holding her chest. I thought maybe she was having a heart attack or something like that.” Anthes’ sister-in-law, Angela Shelton, added, “This other guy comes up and grabs ahold of her. Now that I know what was going on, he was trying to shield her.”Responding officers found the three victims suffering gunshot wounds, according to Lt. Dan Peak of the Chula Vista Police Department. All three were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center with serious injuries. The suspected shooter was pronounced dead at the hospital, and police said the victims underwent surgeryThe woman’s newborn child, who was in a stroller nearby at the time of the shooting, was uninjured in the incident. The child is with family members, police told 10News. Peak said at a Monday afternoon news conference that investigators believe the suspected shooter is either the ex-boyfriend or an acquaintance of the female victim. "We can tell you is that we believe the scene is safe; we believe there is no danger to the public," said Peak. A witness at a Panda Express across from the Costco parking lot said she didn’t see the shooting, but saw police cars swarm the area. Businesses in the area, including Costco, remain open. Police say they recovered a handgun at the scene. There are no outstanding suspects, according to officers.Shelton said she noticed something peculiar about the gun.“It was definitely altered in some way.
