ROSEMEAD (CNS) - Residents across Southern California were checking their homes and apartments this morning for any damage caused by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake that struck two miles south of Rosemead and was felt across a large portion of the region, including Orange County. The quake struck at 11:38 p.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was in almost the same location as the magnitude 5.9Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987, famed seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said. ``Just like in '87, the earthquake is quite deep ... it's possibly on the same fault,'' Jones told NBC4 early Saturday morning. She later tweeted this quake ``is not considered an aftershock (to the Whittier Narrows quake) because the aftershocks died off completely in less than two years.''A pair of aftershocks, magnitudes 2.1 and 1.6, struck within 10 minutes of Friday's quake, Jones said. She said there is about a 5% chance this was a foreshock to a bigger earthquake. The Los Angeles Fire Department went into ``Earthquake Mode, with all 106 Neighborhood Fire Stations checking their areas for damage.''About 12:45 a.m., the department said it had completed its assessments. "Though felt widely in the greater Los Angeles area, we are pleased to report there are no serious injuries, and no preliminary indication of significant infrastructure damage within the City of Los Angeles,'' department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. The department asked residents to also check on at-risk neighbors, especially seniors living alone, and pets. Immediately after the quake, the department called on residents to be prepared for aftershocks.``If inside when shaking starts: DROP, COVER, HOLD ON,'' the department said in a statement. ``Protect your head (and) neck while taking cover under sturdy furniture or near a sturdy interior wall, away from windows and doorways until the shaking stops.''There were no reports of damage at Los Angeles International Airport, but crews are thoroughly checking the airfield and terminal, officials at Los Angeles World Airports said.USC tweeted about 2:15 a.m. that ``(Department of Public Safety) completed a survey of (the main) & (Health Services) campuses, respectively. There were no reports of injuries or damage.''A news photographer near the Golden State (5) and Garden Grove (22) freeways in Santa Ana told City News Service the shaking there was ``significant.''The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted about 12:40 a.m. ``fortunately there are no significant incidents to report'' and asked residents to only call 911 for emergencies. 2578

Retailers pulled some name brand dog food from store shelves after a euthanasia drug was found in several products."I was a little surprised, but at the same time you hear all sorts of stuff about what is and what isn't in dog food," said Sam Porach, pet owner. The FDA started an investigation after a TV station tested several cans of Gravy Train dog food and found 60 percent contained pentobarbital, a drug used to euthanize animals, found in some products."It's a tranquilizing drug that is sometimes used by veterinarians in animal shelters to reduce anxiety in animals and ultimately put them to sleep," said Jackie Bowen, the executive director of Clean Label Project. The Clean Label Project is a non-profit aimed at educating people about toxins in products, including pet food."This industry needs to do a lot more testing and be a lot more critical of the ingredients used in its products," said Bowen. The J.M. Smucker Co. owns the brands in question including Gravy Train, Kibble 'N Bits, Skippy and Ol' Roy.  The company is investigating how pentobarbital got into the supply chain."One possible way is through contaminated ingredients," Bowen said.Between recalls and reading labels, pet owners are left trying to navigate what's really safe."Try to go all natural type yah know baked treats and stuff," pet owner Ryan Searle said."I feel like there's been a pretty big movement lately on knowing what's in your dogs' food and having higher quality foods," Porach said.Smucker's said the low level of the drug found in the food does not pose a threat to pets, but admit it's not acceptable. However, the study that triggered all this started because a woman believed the food killed her dog. The Clean Label?Project has information about pentobarbital in pet food and safe products on its website.  1849

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California judge has thrown out a 2016 state law allowing the terminally ill to end their lives, ruling it was unconstitutionally approved by the Legislature.Lawyers for advocates and opponents say Riverside County Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia did not rule on the legality of physician-assisted death. He issued an oral ruling Tuesday saying lawmakers acted illegally in passing the law during a special session devoted to other topics.Ottolia kept the law in place and gave the state attorney general five days to appeal.RELATED:  579

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Pastor Greg Laurie of the prominent California-based church Harvest Christian Fellowship confirmed he has tested positive for COVID-19.Laurie said in an Instagram posting Monday that he tested positive on Friday and has been in quarantine since then with his wife, but so far all members of his family have tested negative.“My symptoms have been mild so far, and I expect to make a full recovery,” he wrote. “I have always taken the Coronavirus seriously, and it has tragically taken many lives. At a time like this, we need to pray for those that have it and avoid politicizing it. If our President and First Lady can get COVID-19, clearly anyone can.”The Associated Press reports that Laurie was at an event at the White House on Sept. 26 in which President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. At least nine other people who attended that event — including President Donald Trump — have since tested positive for COVID-19.Many in attendance at the White House event were photographed without masks as well as shaking hands and hugging. 1137

RICHMOND, Va. — There has been a major drop in the number of people behind bars in the U.S. An analysis by The Marshall Project and The Associated Press found that between March and June, more than 100,000 people were released from state and federal prisons. That's a drop of 8%. By comparison, the Vera Institute of Justice found that for all of 2019, the state and federal prison population fell by 2.2%. As the U.S. struggles with the coronavirus, prison reform advocates are urging releases to halt its spread in correctional facilities. But their release, and how they behave when they’re out, is likely to affect the larger criminal justice reform movement. 671
