SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - The office of District Attorney Summer Stephan will soon have a new tool to better document injuries to victims of domestic violence. Her office announced on Tuesday, May 7 that 35 cameras will be purchased to aid in investigations, thanks to a ,000 grant from a California Office of Emergency Services.According to Stephan, these cameras can produce high-quality photos, which will then assist how evidence is presented in court. "These cameras can help us preserve and document evidence -- including evidence of strangulation -- which is predictive of homicide, and allows us to move forward with prosecutions and fight this persistent crime in San Diego County," said Stephan.According to a recent crime report from the San Diego Association of Governments, in 2017 there were more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents reported in San Diego County. Stephan said there has been a 20% increase in the number of domestic violence cases submitted to the District Attorney's Office over the last five years. Plus, the District Attorney's Family Protection Division has 21 pending murder cases. 11 of those cases involve the murder of an intimate partner. In addition to the new cameras, Stephan's office is currently working on nine other initiatives to bring awareness to and combat domestic violence. These initiatives include a new countywide strangulation protocol, forensic exams, and recognizing the link between homelessness and domestic violence. 1508

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A car crashed through a parking garage wall and dangled from a building Friday night.Emergency crews responded to the Harbor Club parking structure before 7 p.m.Firefighters say the driver of the White Lexus was a woman in her sixties. They say her foot got stuck under the brake pedal and she was unable to stop.Shortly after the accident authorities were able to pull the car back into the building. The driver was not hurt.A structural engineer was called to the scene and is assessing the damage to the building. 558

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Weather forecasters are warning of "near-critical fire weather conditions" Sunday evening through Tuesday morning in San Diego County because of developing Santa Ana winds."Areas west of the mountains will see a sharp rise in temperatures early this week," the National Weather Service said, "with coastal locations potentially experiencing their hottest conditions so far this year."Inland areas and especially deserts will remain very warm through Thursday, the NWS said, before widespread cooling takes hold late in the week.Early morning satellite images showed widespread clouds extending to the coastal slopes, but much thinner than Saturday and with less uniform coverage, forecasters said. With clouds breaking up, clearer skies Sunday afternoon will allow temperatures to rise several degrees higher than on Saturday.Santa Ana winds will strengthen on Monday, with maximum gusts of 40 to 45 mph as humidity plummets, resulting in elevated fire weather conditions, the NWS said. Highs near 80 and 90 for coastal and inland valleys are expected."Model guidance suggests coastal highs on Tuesday could be the hottest so far this year, climbing well into the 80s." forecasters said. "Depending on the timing of the return to onshore flow, it's conceivable for some coastal cities to reach the low 90s.""All in all, temperatures will be around 20 degrees above normal at the coast, and 10-15 degrees above normal for inland valleys, where temperatures may near 100 degrees in spots," they said.Off the coast of San Diego County, gusty winds and large combined seas will create hazardous boating conditions through Monday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A controversial Target store opened its doors Tuesday night in North Park, on University Avenue at the corner of Ray Street. Not everyone was on board when plans for the two-story Target were announced. North Park residents worried about the impact the retailer would have on local businesses and on parking in an already crowded neighborhood. There was also frustration when Target painted over a popular mural that had been on the side of the building for years. San Diego State University professor Dana Kuhn said economically, Target could have a positive impact on the community by creating jobs and boosting businesses nearby. Kuhn said people spending money at Target would inevitably mean they spend money in surrounding businesses. Kuhn also explained that Target will provided goods and services the community needs and that the money spent will stay in North Park. Target says the new store created 60 jobs and many of the employees do live nearby. Target is officially open as of Tuesday night but a grand opening for the community is scheduled for Sunday, March 17. 1106

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A female sea lion Monday wandered onto the streets of Point Loma, prompting spectators to gather and springing a rescue team into action.According to a passerby, the sea lion was spotted in the middle of Garrison Street around 4 p.m.According to crews, the sea lion would’ve had to cross Rosecrans Street to get to Garrison. Rescuers from SeaWorld responded to the scene, adding that the sea lion appears health and at a normal body weight, but they’ll need to further examine her to learn more.SeaWorld also said it’s unusual for a sea lion to wander that far away from the bay, but the animals have been found on porches, inside hotels and on driveways. 683
