SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - National Guard troops have not been at the border for too long, but are already making their presence felt.Border Patrol officers last week arrested a 31-year-old woman on Interstate 15 they say was transporting 51 bundles of methamphetamine in her vehicle.The woman's vehicle was transported to a Border Patrol facility where agents continued searching the vehicle with the help of National Guardsman who have recently been deployed to the border.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderDuring the secondary search, agents initially did not locate any additional narcotics, officials said. Eventually, a National Guardsman found another 11 bundles of meth hidden deep within a door panel.In all, border agents discovered more than 68 pounds of meth valued at 6,000."Although the California National Guardsman have been on duty for only a couple of weeks, they have quickly fit in and are a great asset in assisting the Border Patrol to protect our communities," San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said.The woman has been turned over to Riverside County law enforcement and faces narcotics smuggling charges.RELATED: Thousands of kids a year migrate to the US alone. What happens next?This month, 24 National Guard troops were deployed to San Diego ports of entry in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, and Calexico.The troops will not be armed or taking part in any immigration enforcement activities, according to CBP, instead, helping in support operations.Border officials expect another 106 additional troops at the ports of entry in the coming weeks. 1666

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New numbers show just how quickly housing has become unaffordable in San Diego county.Housing received a thumbs-down because the Housing Affordability Index for San Diego County decreased from 26% in December 2017 to 24% in December 2018. In 2012, more than 45% of county residents could buy a median-priced home.The report on housing affordability was part of the annual Quality of Life Dashboard released by the Equinox Project, The Nonprofit Institute at University of San Diego. "The change is steep and following the state trends," said Christiana DeBenedict of The Nonprofit Institute.RELATED: San Diego among top hot housing markets for 2019, Zillow reportsAccording to the report, 38% of local homeowners devote more than a third of their income to their mortgage. The renters' situation isn't much better. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in San Diego County, 57% of people pay more than 30% of their income on rent. San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties have the highest proportion of people paying over 30% of their income on rent.DeBenedict says add it all up, and it hurts locals employers trying attract and keep talent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New rules for purchasing bullets go into effect on July 1st, requiring background checks every time someone wants to buy ammunition in California.The law is part of Proposition 63, which voters approved in 2016. In addition to the background checks, it requires a small fee for each transaction."This is to provide more checks and balances, so we have a better idea of who's being sold the ammunition," says Ron Markus, the spokesperson for San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. "If you're someone that doesn't pass a background check, you shouldn't be allowed to buy ammunition."But critics say the law will have unintended consequences, including creating a black market for bullets bought out of state."If you're a Californian, and you go out of state to get ammunition and bring it back into the state of California, you've just broken the law. But if you live in another state, you can bring as much ammunition as you want into the state and give it to anybody in California that you like," says Michael Schwartz, the Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC. He thinks that will lead criminals to conspire with people from out of state to supply bullets.Schwartz also says the background checks won't be as easy as the law intended. As it's written, the law requires instant background checks that run people's information through criminal and mental health databases. Schwartz says only people who are already in the system will get an "instant" result. The rest will have to go through more lengthy checks to buy bullets, which could take days."This won't prevent bad people from doing bad things," Schwartz says. "All it does is put onerous requirements on people who are looking to follow the law."Meanwhile, gun shops are seeing a surge in bullet sales as July nears. They also believe they'll get more business once the law goes into effect since it requires all bullet sales to be done in person at a store. Any online sales will also have to go through a licensed retailer in California.But Schwartz says gun store owners still oppose the rule, even though they stand to profit from it."It's more business for the shop owners, but not more business that they're happy about," he says.Gun safety advocates say the concerns are misguided. They say the sacrifices gun owners will have to make because of the new laws are reasonable when compared to the loss of life from guns."We're sick and tired of hearing about people being shot and killed every single day in this country," says Marcus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person is dead following a shooting at a Midway-area sex shop, according to police.The shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. on the 3600 block of Midway Drive.The identity of the victim and the details surrounding the shooting weren’t immediately clear.
