A total of 47 people died in DUI-related crashes in 2018 compared to 27 deaths over the same time period in 2017. DUI arrests also saw a significant rise. More than 1,100 people were arrested for DUI in 2018 compared to 917 in 2017. In San Diego County, three people died due to DUI-related crashes, tying with 2017. DUI arrests rose slightly from 56 to 57 in 2018. The reporting period for the arrests and deaths was Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, December 25. 584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a mother was drunk and driving her children when she crashed going the wrong way on a Rancho Bernardo street Monday morning.The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. on Camino del Norte, just west of Interstate 15. The woman drove her Chevy SUV east in the westbound lanes of the road, hitting a man in a Jeep Liberty.Officers told 10News the mother, who is in her 30s, had her 8-year-old child in the backseat with her 2-year-old child in a car seat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SDG&E announced Fire Safe 3.0 innovations to advance wildfire safety at its headquarters in Kearny Mesa Tuesday.It's the power company's plan to use more advanced technologies to improve wildfire safety. Instead of using weather data updated every 10 minutes, they utilize data updated every 30 seconds instead. SDG&E's chief meteorologist explained they're using artificial intelligence-based models that make weather data more accurate and they're monitoring more than 500,000 trees in the area using a "Vegetation Risk Index."It helps determine how those trees might impact power lines or become fuel for fires. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years.The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information.The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information.
