A United Airlines flight made an unscheduled stop at Washington Dulles International Airport on Friday after an odor in the cabin left passengers feeling ill.Flight 1675 from Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI) was en route to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), when it landed at Dulles at about 7:45 a.m.The plane landed without incident, according to a statement from Dulles International Airport. The Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and transported seven passengers to local hospitals for evaluation, the statement said.Raman Santra, one of the passengers on the flight, said that there was a "faint fuel smell" in the cabin before departure. The odor became "quite strong while in the air" and several passengers complained of nausea, chest pain and trouble breathing, Santra said.United Airlines canceled the flight and informed passengers that the aircraft, a Boeing 737, required "prolonged ventilation system maintenance," Santra said.Santra's wife, Jo Palmer, was one of the seven hospitalized because she had more acute symptoms. He said United Airlines representatives offered to take care of the hospital bills and other expenses.Palmer is doing better now, and the two hope to make it to their friend's wedding later Friday, Santra told CNN.United Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The incident did not impact airport operations, Dulles officials said.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. A young whale whose carcass washed up in the Philippines died of "dehydration and starvation" after consuming 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of plastic bags, scientists have found.Marine biologist and environmentalist Darrell Blatchley told CNN that the juvenile male Cuvier's beaked whale was found "showing signs of being emaciated and dehydration" and had been "vomiting blood before it died."Blatchley, who is president and founder of D' Bone Collector Museum, a natural history museum in the Philippine city of Davao, said his team received notification on Friday that the carcass of the whale had been found in Mabini, Compostela Valley. The team subsequently took the carcass to its facility and performed a necropsy, which found that it had died from ingesting plastic."I was not prepared for the amount of plastic," Blatchley said. "Roughly 40 kilos of rice sacks, grocery bags, banana plantation bags and general plastic bags. Sixteen rice sacks in total."He noted that there were so many plastic bags in the animal's stomach that some had begun to calcify. He added that cetaceans -- a family of aquatic mammals that includes whales and dolphins -- don't drink water from the ocean but obtain their water from the food they eat. As the whale was no longer able to consume large amounts of food due to the ingested plastic, it died of "dehydration and starvation," Blatchley said. The D' Bone Collector Museum said in a statement that this was the most plastic its team had ever seen in the stomach of a whale, and described the discovery as "disgusting."The museum called on governments to take action against those who "continue to treat waterways and oceans as dumpsters."Peter Kemple Hardy, a campaigner at World Animal Protection -- an animal welfare charity -- described the incident as a "tragic reminder" of the need to "work together towards global solutions" in order to prevent plastic pollution being left in our oceans."Hundreds of thousands of whales, dolphins, seals and turtles are killed by ocean plastic pollution every year, including single-use plastics and abandoned plastic gear from the fishing industry," he told CNN.Mark Simmonds, senior marine scientist at Humane Society International, told CNN that the latest incident once again highlights the "cruel global crisis that marine debris is presenting to wildlife." He warned that the crisis often remains "out of sight and mind" except when animals such as this are recovered and examined."Efforts must be stepped up worldwide to reduce plastics pollution in our oceans or this kind of tragedy may become far more common in the future," he concluded. 2639

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Hundreds of dollars in school lunch debt in Allendale, Michigan, is about to be paid off in full. That's thanks to a mom teaching her kids the value of charity and a local business who stepped in to help.Aaron Haight says she wants her children to learn to be a blessing whenever possible and that you can do that in many different ways."I wanted to give back to the community, but I also wanted to teach my kids kind of about their privilege and how important it is to give back when you are in a place of privilege," Haight said. That’s why, a few years ago, Haight's family started fundraising to pay off hundreds of dollars in school lunch debt for Allendale Public Schools."Every year, we worked with Jody who is the director of food service at Allendale Public Schools, and she would kind of tell us about how much money we needed to raise and we would raise it through friends and family and some local businesses contributed throughout the year," she explained. That was the plan again this year. That is until Trail Point Brewing Company in Allendale stepped in and pledged to pay the debt in full.Co-owner Greg Evans says he was inspired when the Mitten Brewing and Fetch Brewing did something similar.Evans said, "It's something that really hit home to me. There are kids in this area that are saddled with school debt, and we try to pride ourselves on being a community center."He explained, "This was one way we could give back to the community by clearing this lunch debt so it's one less thing that they have to worry about."Haight says it goes to show what a giving community Allendale is."I think in Allendale we're just very fortunate that we do have a lot of smaller local businesses that have been very generous with their time and their money with giving back to the community, and this is just another example of that," she said.Haight says the debt is usually about 0, but they won’t know the total until the school year ends next June. This article was written by Darren Cunningham for 2041
