SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric officials announced a campaign Wednesday to publicize job openings and recruit as many local candidates as possible to support the region's ongoing economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.SDG&E has continued hiring new employees amid the pandemic, not just to fill positions that have opened up due to attrition, but also because the company and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 465 adopted a joint plan earlier this year for new multi-year hiring, training and apprenticeship programs. These programs are designed to help develop a highly specialized and skilled workforce to complete critical infrastructure projects needed to enhance wildfire safety, upgrade natural gas pipelines and expand the electrical vehicle charging infrastructure needed for zero emission transportation, officials said. The latest job openings are posted at sdge.com/careers.The recruitment awareness campaign will begin on Monday with the first of a series of chats with company recruiters on SDG&E's Instagram channel. Chats will occur through the end of the month, with each session featuring a human resources representative specializing in particular areas of recruitment. The HR representatives will also offer interview and resume tips. The recruiting chats will occur Monday at noon for entry level gas and electric workers, June 22 for call center representatives, June 25 for careers in the energy field and June 29 for a college recruiting team chat.In addition to social media outreach, SDG&E will be reaching out to community-based organizations to help publicize its openings. The utility is also working with local community leaders and elected officials to amplify awareness of these opportunities.Over the next three years, SDG&E plans to hire nearly 150 entry-level positions, while investing in six line apprenticeship classes, six line assistant classes, three electrician assistant classes and specialized training for welding and other high-skilled trades. Officials said the plan would result in the hiring or significant "upskilling" of 400 to 500 positions. 2160

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The founder and former CEO of a San Diego startup pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal wire fraud charge for stealing more than .5 million from his own company.Jeffrey Fildey, 56, of Las Vegas, created GoFormz Inc. -- which provides online mobile forms and reporting products -- and began illegally taking money from the company sometime around late 2015 and continued to do so through August 2017, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.U.S. Attorney Robert S. Brewer said, Fildey "abused a position of trust to brazenly steal company assets, treating GoFormz Inc. as his own private slush fund."Prosecutors say Fildey obtained loans -- supposedly for the company -- then kept the funds for himself, paid for personal expenditures on company credit cards, received cash advances for himself on company credit cards and took money directly from the company's bank account.A U.S. Attorney's Office statement announcing the plea cited examples that included a 6,250 loan he obtained for the company, which he immediately wired from the firm's bank account to his personal bank account. The U.S. Attorney's Office said GoFormz made payments on the loan while he spent the money on personal expenses. The U.S. Attorney's Office said Fildey took three unauthorized loans on behalf of the company and transferred the funds to his bank account each time, withdrew more than 0,000 in cash from the company's bank account for his personal use and made more than ,600 in unauthorized purchases on the corporate credit card. The company lost ,544,147 as a result, according to the plea agreement.Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 9. 1658

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society has changed its adoption process to a socially-distant experience, allowing prospective pet owners adhering to California's stay-at-home order to adopt a new furry friend from afar.An adoption counselor will call the prospective adopter to conduct a consultation over the phone to discuss available animals and help the adopter choose the pet which best fits their lifestyle. Once the pet is adopted, the adopter can drive up to the campus and staff will help safely load the animal into the adopter's car.RELATED:Amid COVID-19 closures, some San Diegans turn to pet adoptionSan Diego area puppy stores accused of selling dogs from puppy millsHelen Woodward launches 'critter cam' amid social distancingHumane Society campuses in Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego are open by appointment only each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interested adopters should call the society at 619-299-7012 to make an appointment."The COVID-19 pandemic is presenting significant challenges for San Diego Humane Society's lifesaving work, but it is imperative that we continue to find homes for the animals in our care," said SDHS President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Registrar of Voters has received more than 560,000 ballots, it was announced Wednesday, more than three times the amount received at this point before the 2016 election. With less than two weeks remaining before the Nov. 3 election, the ballots are in the process of being put through a sorting machine that captures images of voters' signatures for comparison to ones the registrar has on file.Mail-in ballots were sent to all 1.9 million registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even to those who had not requested one. Nearly a quarter of those have already been processed."Within minutes after the polls close at 8 p.m. on election night, the results for those early returns that were mailed in or deposited at drop- off locations before election day are counted," the registrar's office tweeted. For those who prefer to vote in person, the Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa is open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Voters also have the option to drop off their ballot at one of 126 drop-off locations around the county -- including dozens of libraries, YMCAs, county offices and The Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person San Diego-area polling places will be open for four days instead of one, Registrar Michael Vu said.Vu has announced that his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely. An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.Voters are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance."We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home," Vu said. "Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. The sooner we receive your ballot, the sooner we can start processing it so it will be counted right when the polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3."Voters can return their marked ballot in the pre-paid postage envelope to any U.S. Postal Service office or collection box.Locations of vote centers were carefully chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance, officials said. Masks will be required inside, but residents who are unable or unwilling to wear them will be allowed to vote curbside. However, officials noted that the need to social distance may create longer lines than usual at in-person locations. 2629
