Deterring kids from the streets is a challenge many communities around the country are dealing with, but Howard Cato has a very specific plan to do just that. Cato started a summer camp, where he takes kids to a BMX bike track, teaching them the basics of the sport.“BMX, bicycle motocross,” he explains. “What I do is, we race bikes.”For Cato, BMX was all about the thrill.“Oh man, it’s the adrenaline,” he says, grinning.But looking back on the hobby he picked up in his childhood, he realizes now that it was more than that; BMX gave him a hobby that kept him off the streets—that is until his father died.“I stopped racing BMX. I found the streets, going out there on the streets, man, and leaving my bikes,” he says. “And I ended up getting shot several times and paralyzed.”Eventually he found his way back. These days, he’s making sure kids in his hometown of Oakland have a chance to learn the skill that set him on the right track.Cato started the program Flood the Streets with Bikes, which aims to provide bikes to kids who don’t have them. CLEVELAND — Ohio drivers have mixed reactions when commenting on Senate Bill 78, which is proposing a ban on smoking in vehicles when children ages six and younger are passengers.The measure sponsored by state Sen. Tina Maharath, D-Canal Winchester, calls for a 0 fine for first-time violators of the law and a fine of 0 plus 0 for each additional citation.Dr. Kristie Ross with Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland told WEWS she believes the proposed law makes a lot of sense since secondhand smoke exposure for children sets up plenty of potential health issues."When they're in a car and someone is smoking, it's a very concentrated exposure," Ross said."When you smoke there's particles that settle onto things and that can lead to exposure, and what we call thirdhand smoke."In children it impedes the way that their lungs grow and develop, the lung size when they reach adulthood."It can trigger asthma attacks in kids who are vulnerable to those, and makes kids more vulnerable to ear infections."Anna Busta said she supports the bill."I feel like the first offense fine is kind of high, with the prevalence of smoking, but I think it's great, especially for younger kids with disabilities," the Ohio driver said.But other drivers, like Sandra Buckner, believe the proposed law is too restrictive."I kind of think that we are inventing laws that take away our civil liberties and pretty soon we will live in a communist state where you are telling me what to do every second of every day," Buckner said.Ohio tried to pass a similar law in 2017.Senate Bill 78 has now been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.Several other states have already adopted vehicle smoking bans while children are in cars as passengers. 1764

But astronomers will still have their eyes to the sky this weekend when asteroid 163348 (2002 NN4) will glide 3 million miles past Earth on Saturday. The asteroid is roughly the size of the stadium, with a diameter of 1,100 feet. The asteroid will whiz by the earth at a distance of more than 10 times further than the orbit of the moon. The asteroid poses no threat to Earth, or any spacecrafts. 163348 is one of thousands of near-earth objects NASA tracks. The objects range from the size of automobiles to over a kilometer in diameter. The vast majority of these objects are smaller. But even smaller objects can be damaging on a local level. In 2013, a 60-meter-wide meteor entered the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia. The resulting airblast caused a number of injuries due to broken windows. 891

According to data released by the National Retail Federation, 40 percent of Americans start their holiday shopping by Halloween. That is why many retailers begin holiday marketing in September, the NRF said.. In additional holiday shopping data released by the NRF this week, one piece of unknown data is whether prices will increase this holiday season due to tariffs. "Some holiday merchandise including apparel, footwear and televisions are subject to new tariffs that took effect on September 1, and other products will have tariffs applied on December 15," the NRF said. The NRF added that retailers will work to limit the impact of tariffs, but that many small businesses will be unable to absorb the costs. For this holiday season, the NRF expects retails to rake in 4 percent more revenue compared to 2018, with between 7.9 billion and 0.7 billion in total revenue.While spending on gifts for family is expected to decline, spending on gifts for non-family members could see a giant increase the NRF said. For the average consumer, they said they will spend ,047.83 this holiday season.
