The quadrennial inauguration of a president generally draws hundreds of thousands of people to the Washington Mall in DC. But in January, President-elect Joe Biden expects that number to be much lower. As the inauguration stage is being built outside the US Capitol, Biden said he expects his inauguration to look akin to the 2020 Democratic National Convention, which was held virtually."First and foremost in my objective is to keep America safe but still allow people to celebrate," Biden said. "To celebrate and see one another celebrating."Some other traditional elements to Inauguration Day, like the parade and balls, appear to be scrapped.“There will probably not be a gigantic inaugural parade,” Biden said.Other Inauguration Day events, such as the signing ceremony and luncheon the new president has with congressional leaders, are still unknown. As of now, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is unaware of any restrictions related to the pandemic. Those wishing to get a spot to view Biden’s inauguration can still request tickets to the event through their member of Congress.Another sign that the pomp and circumstance of this year’s inauguration will look different is this could be the first time in US history that a presidential inauguration fails to result in a peaceful transfer of power. Outgoing President Donald Trump has continued to allege the election was stolen from him despite dozens of failed lawsuits and no formal prosecutions of widespread fraud. It has been a long-standing tradition that the incoming and outgoing president meet at the White House and travel to the Capitol together before the inauguration.Trump has suggested that Biden would only be able enter the White House after the inauguration if he can “prove” he received 81 million votes.Three weeks ago, a joint statement released by federal and state officials described the presidential election as the “most secure in American history.”In response to the letter, Trump fired US election security head Chris Krebs. In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Biden said he is hopeful Trump will attend the inauguration."I think it would be important only in one sense, not in a personal sense, important in the sense that we are able to demonstrate the end of this chaos that he's created, that there is peaceful transfer of power with the competing parties standing there, shaking hands and moving on,” Biden said. 2436

The pandemic is coinciding with flu season, which is a potentially dangerous scenario doctors and nurses have given much thought to as the winter months approach.“How much is [the flu] going to play into things, and is it just going to make everything worse?” said Dr. Michelle Barron. “Is it going to comingle with COVID, and actually make people double sick or doubly ill?”Dr. Barron is the senior medical director of infection prevention and control at one of Colorado’s largest hospitals. She says staff has come up with contingency plans to deal with an influx of patients who might be battling serious flu symptoms.“We’ve been really encouraging our patients to get their flu shots and make sure they have that on their list,” she said. “We understand that there are some years that you’re debating whether or not it’s worth it, and we’re like this is the year you need to get it.”The CDC estimates around 196 million flu shots are available this year, a 13 percent increase from last year’s record-setting dosage of 175 million. It is an important number as last year 400,000 people were hospitalized for the flu, a potential burden hospitals have prepared for as bed space is now at a premium.“We’ve already surpassed the numbers of the first surge, so now, we’re like what’s next,” said Maddie Smith, a nurse at UCHealth in Colorado.Smith works in the hospital’s COVID ICU. She says while her unit has not reached a tipping point, it is expecting more flu patients to come in. Her unit has made plans to allocate more bed space to the seriously ill, regardless of cause, and treat them with whatever drugs are necessary. The good news, she says, is the flu has been treated for years, so doctors have a good plan of attack, and the measures we have taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19 are having a positive effect on the spread of the flu.“We usually are able to use the southern hemisphere as a good way to figure out what our flu season is going to look like,” said Dr. Barron. “They actually had a pretty mild flu season but COVID hit at the exact same time.”Dr. Barron says 3 to 5 percent of COVID-19 patients have had co-infection with another virus, showing complications are possible as flu season hits its stride, but not guaranteed.“I don’t think it’s anything that we can’t manage that we already haven’t thought about,” said Dr. Barron. 2367

The Mormon church is parting ways with the Boy Scouts of America after more than a century. In a joint statement Tuesday night, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Boy Scouts of America announced their decision to end their relationship next year after 105 years. The Boy Scouts serves about 330,000 Mormon youths, and the Mormon church is one of its largest sponsors."We have jointly determined that, effective on December 31, 2019, the church will conclude its relationship as a chartered organization with all Scouting programs around the world," the statement said. The Mormon church said it made the decision because it's expanded outside the United States, and wants to explore new youth programs that serve its international members. It will continue to work fully with the organization and support its goals and values until the end of next year. 878

The percentage of Americans who say they would probably or definitely get a COVID-19 vaccine when one becomes available has sharply decreased in just the last few months.A survey done in mid-September by the Pew Research Center found only 51 percent of respondents would definitely or probably get the vaccine when one became available. A similar survey done in May found 72 percent of participants would definitely or probably get the vaccine. The 21 point drop was all in the “definitely would get the vaccine” category, according to the data.According to the data, a large drop in the number of American who would get the vaccine was seen in both Republican leaning respondents and Democratic leaning.Republican participants went from 65 percent would get the vaccine in May to 44 percent in September. Participants who identified as Democratic went from 79 percent would get the vaccine in May to 58 percent in September.Large drops were seen across gender, race and ethnicity as well.“About three-quarters of Americans (77%) say it is at least somewhat likely that a vaccine for COVID-19 will be approved and used in the U.S. before it’s fully known whether it is safe and effective, including 36% who say this is very likely to happen,” Pew Research Center wrote of their findings.Of the 49 percent who would not get a vaccine, the majority of them are worried about potential side effects.Side effects are also a concern for those who would get the vaccine. Of the 51 percent who said they would probably or definitely get the vaccine, more than half said that if many people were experiencing minor side effects they would reconsider getting the vaccine. The data came from more than 10,000 Americans surveyed between September 8-13. 1748

The pandemic put a real stress on the funeral industry in some areas. Some crematoriums and funeral homes even raised prices because of demand.“What you learn is the variance within a market is extraordinary,” said Ed Michael Reggie, founder of Funeralocity.com. “You can have a direct cremation for ,000 or 00, you can have a burial for ,000 or ,000.”On Funeralocity.com, you can find the prices for nearly every funeral home in America, more than 19,000. Experts say people rarely shop around with final preparations.“Survivors are in a grief-stricken state. They just say, ‘oh gosh we’ve been to the memorial funeral home down the street for other things,’ they just call them,” said Reggie.Part of the problem is funeral homes don't have to post prices online. They're required to give the cost over the phone or provide a list in person. The Federal Trade Commission may eventually require it.Funeralocity.com is free to use.“We hope the way we’ve created our website, where you can mix and match, say ‘OK I want a traditional burial with a ceremony, I want one without, I just want a direct burial, a direct cremation, how about a cremation with ceremonies,’ so we let them play around and it’s all apples to apples to apples, all the other funeral homes in the area,” said Reggie.Funeralocity.com created a program to give accreditation to funeral homes that are vetted and transparent. There are laws that prevent funeral homes from charging extra because of a particular disease or refusing services because of a disease. 1547
