SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new streaming documentary follows young San Diegans on a life-changing trip to the Philippines."Filgrimage" focuses on eight Filipino-Americans during a 2019 summer trip to the Philippines with The Filipino School."If we don't have programs like this, then we as Filipino-Americans are only going to know what we have time to know, or what we're exposed to," says Tony Olaes, the founder of The Filipino School and organizer of the trip.He says a similar trip to the Philippines 14 years ago inspired him to learn more about his culture. That's what he hopes this trip does for the people who take it."I went from not wanting to be Filipino to 'Mr. Filipino,'" he says. "It's because I understood something amazingly beautiful about who I was. So that's how this all started."Olaes took 23 people on the trip in 2019. A documentary crew followed them as they visited several parts of the archipelago."This is something that you can't really get unless you actually experience it for yourself," says Jocelynne Monteheromoso, one of the teens profiled in the documentary. "The fact that we were going through it and it was recorded on camera is just something so beautiful that I feel that our generation especially needs to know about.""I hope this encourages anyone who is embarrassed of their culture, or straight away or doesn't even know about their culture, to try and put some work to figure out more about it," says Ryah Hernandez, who says she discovered a beauty in the region that she didn't know about from family trips as a child.San Diego has the second-largest Filipino population of any county in the US. Olaes says he hopes this documentary will give people who don't have the time or means to take a trip like this a glimpse into their ancestral homeland. He calls it a typical American story."The minute we start to reach into an inquire into where we all came from and the beauty of where we came from, it's that beauty that we get to bring to the United States," says Olaes.As part of the trip, the teens also helped build homes for low-income people in the Philippines.The documentary is 14 parts and lasts around two hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person is back in ICE custody and in isolation after they were taken to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center to be evaluated for possible coronavirus symptoms.The individual was in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when officials determined the person needed to be taken to Sharp Chula Vista, the county said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken mother is making a plea for tips after a burglar makes off with a computer with with "priceless memories."An upset Sheila Conway shared her story with 10News, weeks after she returned to her home on Norwich Street to a break-in. It appears the burglar opened an unlocked outer door, before somehow opening another door. Taken were Conway's purse and her silver HP laptop. Inside that computer: A lifetime of memories of her only child, her son Tyler Peckham. Tyler, diagnosed with schizophrenia, took his own life in 2014 at the age of 26. Just off the kitchen is a wall memorial dedicated to Tyler, filled with photos showing Tyler growing up into adulthood. Conway says the computer contained hundreds of photos, most of them not backed up. “Cried a lot and just furious. It wasn’t a laptop, but memories that were stolen … everything from baby pictures to adult photos that I’ll never see again,” said Conway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of local singers are trying to help people cope with social distancing by hosting live happy hour concerts on Facebook.Don LeMaster and Corey Hable host shows a couple of times a week, singing for nearly three hours."It's just as fun for us as it is for the people watching," says LeMaster. "We love doing it, and it's helping us in our home. He had to miss a gig because he had a cold. So he decided to sing online that night.Now that he and Hable are out of work, they've kept it going. So far, they've done seven shows.The concerts have become extremely popular, garnering thousands of views. "We've had people join from Spain. We had South Korea. We had some in the Philippines, and Stockholm last night. So it's crazy."It's also therapeutic. They plan to do a Yacht Rock theme for this concert. And while they do accept donations through PayPal and Venmo, they say it's not about the money. It's about the connection to each other and the music."People's response has been great," says Hable. "They've been showing us support and love, saying thank you so much for doing this. We need this positivity.
