CHULA VISTA (KGTV) --  Eastlake's Design District shopping complex, which once boasted a vibrant family and adult nightlife destination for the sprawling east Chula Vista communities, lost yet another marquee tenant.Good bye, Tavern+Bowl Eastlake.The 11-year-old bowling alley and sports lounge, located at 871 Showroom Place off Otay Lakes Road, locked its doors unexpectedly Monday night.  The 16,000-square-foot establishment nestled within a modern strip mall adorned with water features, rich landscaping, and winding sidewalks was a popular spot for locals.Tavern and Bowl is one of four recent closures at the Design District: restaurant Filippi's Pizza Grotto, arcade and laser tag center Lazer Journey, and indoor go-kart track Eastlake Speed Circuit.READ:?Anonymous tip led to Filippi's inspectionIt's unclear if staff or management were aware of the bowling alley's plans to shut down.  Robyn Spencer, a sales director at the San Diego location, would only say that the tavern "has permanently closed."What is clear is that at least one regular was left in the dark.Emeka Enunwa, an Eastlake resident and manager at Work Skills, is upset that the bowling alley is gone.  He says he often brings a group of adults with disabilities to Tavern and Bowl to learn life skills by working light "volunteer-like" duties, such as cleaning and performing tasks.He says his group was there two days ago but nobody told him that would be their last shift. His group took pride working at the facility and that the news of the closure may be devastating to some. Enunwa also worried about what's happening in Eastlake that's forcing all these businesses to shut down. READ: 'Ghost Town?'?Vacant storefronts reflect mall struggles at Chula Vista's Otay Ranch Town Center"I live in the neighborhood and have seen stores close in this shopping complex," he said. "I'm beginning to feel bad as a business owner; no notice ... throwing employees out of work," he said."I'm feeling for the city...they're losing jobs, they're losing money," he said.Enunwa is working quickly to find another business partner but says it's hard "because not everybody wants to accept people with disabilities."The District at Eastlake property management group could not be reached immediately Wednesday for comment.10News' Laura Acevedo contributed to this report. 2492

China’s government says all 9 million people in the eastern city of Qingdao will be tested for the coronavirus this week after nine cases linked to a hospital were found. The announcement broke a string of weeks without any locally transmitted infections reported in China, though the country has a practice of not reporting asymptomatic cases. The National Health Commission said authorities were investigating the source of the infections found in eight patients at Qingdao’s Municipal Chest Hospital and one family member. The commission said the whole city will be tested within five days.China only has reported a handful of cases since the spring. 662

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- With cases of coronavirus continuing to spike in the United States, Southwestern College announced Tuesday that the campus will be conducting courses online for about a week as a precautionary measure.Students and campus staff are moving all in-person classes to online or distributed instruction from March 16 through the 20.The decision joins numerous other institutions throughout the country to help suppress the spread of the virus.List: Major universities suspending in-person classes amid coronavirus fears"This is a rapidly changing situation and we appreciate everyone’s patience as college leadership works to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, employees and community," said SWC President Kindred Murillo said.They are also canceling "large public events at all our campuses." (KGTV) -- South Bay junior and senior high school families learned Monday they will need to stand fast at home a little longer after district officials said they will not reopen campuses for physical learning this year.The Sweetwater Union High School District announced that students will continue distance learning through December 2020 citing "significantly higher" COVID-19 cases within the district's communities.The announcement comes as local health officials wait to hear if the state will place San Diego County back into the purple tier -- the most restrictive level on California's coronavirus reopening road map. Such a move would likely shutter indoor operations for restaurants, movie theaters, houses of worship and gyms, limit retail businesses to just 25% capacity. Chula Vista reported 5,603 COVID-19 cases making up 12.7% of the county's total cases, according to the latest county health data. "It is with this information, and with our continued commitment to the safety of our students, families, and staff, that we announce the continuation of distance learning for the remainder of the semester through December 2020," the district said in an email to families."As was outlined in our reopening plan earlier in the summer, our next checkpoint will be by November 30, 2020, to determine how we will start the second semester in January 2021," officials said.SUHSD is the first school district to commit to closing its campuses through the remainder of the year.The district kicked off its school year online on Aug. 3, the first district in the county to start the fall semester.Under the distance learning model, students are attending three virtual classes per day with 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with each teacher. The remaining time is spent in independent study.The district said that they are researching ways to provide in-person services to "some of our highest needs students," and the possibility of small group supports if pandemic conditions improve."During this incredibly challenging time, we will continue to closely monitor the latest information and work with our local health agencies and our partners to ensure that we are doing what is in the best public health interest of the entire community," officials said.The district said it will again review its next steps on Nov. 30 to determine how it will start the second semester in January 2021. 2577
