BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods grew 18.7 percent in November year on year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday.Retail sales of consumer goods stood at 1.39 trillion yuan (208.1 billion U.S. dollars) in November and the growth rate was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in October, the NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun said at a press conference.Retail sales of consumer goods in the January-to-November period reached 13.92 trillion yuan, up 18.4 percent from the same period last year.The growth rate in the January-to-November period was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in the January-to-October period.The NBS said urban consumption hit 1.2 trillion yuan in November, up 19 percent year on year.Rural residents spent 186.5 billion yuan on consumption goods in November, up 17 percent year on year.In breakdown, catering sector sales rose 19.6 percent to 160.1 billion yuan in November from a year earlier, while retail sales increased 18.6 percent to 1.23 trillion yuan in November year on year.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Minister of National Defense said on Tuesday it had reduced the country's military reserves forces from 600,000 to 510,000 men and women over the past five years.China has also reduced the number of people in its militias from 10 million to eight million during the same period, said Gen. Liang Guanglie in an interview with Xinhua.It is the first time the Chinese government has given the exact number of people in the reserve forces and militias. In times of emergencies, the reserve forces and militias can be ordered to assist China's 2.3-million regular troops, the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Although China has experienced around 30 years of peace, Gen. Liang said the PLA has never relaxed its military preparations and vigilance especially at a time when "regional military conflicts can not be ruled out."In times of peace, the PLA's reserves conduct regular military training and participate in non-combat military operations, such as disaster relief work.The minister said the PLA had pushed forward military reforms in the past five years to build a more powerful military with upgraded weapon systems and high-quality personnel.Currently, 80 percent of the PLA's officers have four years of higher education compared with 25.8 percent in 1998, Gen. Liang said.To improve the quality of military personnel, the Chinese government has encouraged university graduates to join the armed forces since 2009. BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) announced Monday that it will guide the nation's banks to a scientific pace of lending this year as it stressed bank loans should better serve the real economy.The CBRC said in a statement on its website that it will also expand and improve financial services in the country's rural areas and encourage banks to support borrowing activities from small-sized companies.The CBRC said it will carry out more studies in stepping up support for the country's affordable housing program, which aims to build 10 million affordable housing units for low and middle income residents this year.The commission also said it will continue to implement the differentiated home loan policy adopted last year, under which bank loans for third home purchases are suspended and down payments for all first-time home buyers are at least 30 percent of the purchase price, while second home buyers will have to pay an even higher amount of down payments, at 50 percent.Further, the CBRC said it would tighten controls over lending to local government's financing vehicles in order to ward off risks.Government data showed new yuan-denominated lending in China reached 7.95 trillion yuan (about 1.2 trillion U.S. Dollars) last year, overshooting the government's full-year target of 7.5 trillion yuan.
