On one of the islands of the Florida Keys, there’s a small animal that’s causing a big stir. “You know, I love the Key Deer, they’re just, they’re warm and fuzzy,” said Cathy Rhoades, who runs the Florida Keys Wildlife Society. “We do consider them a national treasure,” said Kristie Killam with US Fish and Wildlife. The Key Deer. It’s a little known species of deer that’s native to the island chain. The animal is very small compared to its cousins on the mainland. “The small ones, can get pretty – 2 to 4 pounds at birth," explained Killam. "Some of the tinier ones that look almost like a house cat. Some of the itty bitty fawns." For more than 50 years, the baby Bambi has been a member of the endangered species act. The population declined in the 40s and 50s by hunting. “To the point there was only about 25 to 50 Key Deer left in the wild were the estimates,” said Killam. But they could be removed from the endangered species list. They are recommended on the 3-year work plan for US Fish and Wildlife for de-listing due to recovery. They’re just one of 55 species included in the report. But the tiny animal is incredibly important to Vivian Beck. "They’re just so unique that they literally live among us, or I should say we live among them, and they’re adapting,” said Beck. She’s the president of the Key Deer Protection Alliance, an organization dedicated to keeping the Key Deer protected. Beck thinks removing the animal from the list is premature. US Fish and Wildlife estimates there are between 600 and 800 deer on the island. She says she’s been told as many as 1,000 deer. “Texas A&M said there were 573, so our numbers didn’t match up at all,” said Beck. While the Department of Fish and Wildlife did give us an interview to discuss the deer’s history and biology, they said they can’t comment on an ongoing species assessment. For those that live in the Florida Keys, they just want the assessment to reflect the truth. “That’s the process I would like to see happen, just get more information, more information and refine your thinking based on the information that you have,” said Rhoades.“The Key Deer are one storm and one disease away from total extinction,” said Beck.  2230

Boarding a flight can sometimes be a long process, and if you’re flying internationally, it can take even longer. However, thanks to new technology, you can soon say goodbye to those long wait times. It's called facial biometrics, and essentially, travelers’ faces are their boarding passes. One of the companies behind the facial recognition technology at the airport is SITA. A machine scans the traveler’s face right before you board, ensuring the right people are getting on the plane. "There is an element of enhanced confidence in your flight about who is on your flight from this activity," says Janice Kephart, former National Security Director says. That's because U.S. Customs and Border Protection, along with SITA, uses your face against terror watch lists and illegal aliens. "In the first two months, we've got 62 imposters that we could’ve missed, because human beings are pretty lousy when it comes to determining imposters," says Colleen Manaher, executive director of U.S. Customs and Borders Protection. Manaher says biometric technology is enhancing traveler safety and convenience at airports around the country. The agency hopes one day TSA will jump on board with using facial biometrics. The new technology is currently being used at airports in Miami, Orlando and Atlanta. 1316

Ortega’s new place is just a few miles away from her old one in downtown Denver, where her rent shot up 0 in one year. “The first two years that I’ve been here, I paid ,000 in rent,” she says. That's why Colorado lawmakers are pushing for rent control. However, right now, it’s banned. “We need to update our policies to give renters more rights and to give municipalities the full set of tools that they need to be able to set what the rates stabilization policies in their communities really should look like,” says Julie Gonzales, D-Colorado State Senate District 34. Aurora, Colorado is among the top big cities with the highest rent growth, up 35 percent in five years.That's why in addition to Colorado, Illinois lawmakers have introduced bills to end the state's 22-year rent control ban. New York has a state-wide rent control law, but cities can choose whether or not to participate, so now lawmakers are considering measures to close those loopholes. Activists in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island are also organizing for stronger rent protections. Alex Padilla, an economics professor at MSU Denver, says rent control could bring unintended consequences, like lower quality housing, less incentive to build new properties and discrimination. “If we want to make housing less expensive, we need to allow for more building to take place,” Padilla says. But incredibly high cost of rent is pricing out people with good paying jobs. Even six-figure salary earners struggle in some cities. “I'm living day to day, just hoping I make enough money just to pay my bills, to be able to pay my rent, to be able to feed myself,” Ortega says. 1744
