He never expected to be going out on a limb."I want to get the word out," he says.Walters says he's concerned about Census takers in the field, including his team of 11. His crew is knocking on doors around Mira Mesa to collect data from those who haven't responded to the government survey. Walters says the Census Bureau gave each worker a Ziploc bag with just two cloth masks and a bottle of hand sanitizer, which Walters says is not nearly enough."We would be sending them into harms way with nothing but a piece of cloth over their face," he says.His concern is that when people are home and come to the door, they're less likely to be wearing a mask. He's now pushing for the Census bureau to provide its field workers with plastic face shields - a request he has tried to escalate with no success.The Census Bureau referred ABC-10 to a recent joint statement with the CDC. It says Census takers are trained to wear face masks, maintain six feet of social distance, practice hand hygiene, and not enter homes to do interviews.Walters says the leadership agreed the plastic face shields would be a benefit, but if Walters wanted to get them for his own crew, he'd need to pay for them out of his own pocket. He did exactly that - shelling out about on amazon for a bundle of them, at .50 each.Still, Walters says he's alarmed by the number of seniors he sees signing up as census takers, those at higher risk for Covid-19."We're not talking about body armor. Gavin Newsom ordered that flags at the state Capitol be flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of the eight Marines and one Navy sailor who died when an amphibious assault vehicle sank during a training mission last week near San Clemente Island."Jennifer and I were heartbroken to learn of the loss of nine service members in an accident off San Clemente Island," Newsom said in a statement. "It is a painful reminder of the sacrifice of members of our armed forces, who put their lives on the line for us. We stand united in mourning with their families and fellow Marines and sailors."The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship about 80 miles off the coast of Encinitas about 5:45 p.m. last Thursday when it started taking on water for unknown reasons, according to Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of 1st MEF.Seven members of the Camp Pendleton-based crew survived the accident. Medics took two of them to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where both were admitted in critical status. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A comprehensive outreach strategy to expand testing access for Latino residents and other communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic was announced Friday by local leaders.The new program will kick off on Monday, with a new testing site at the Mexican Consulate in downtown San Diego at 1549 India St. Starting at 8 a.m., walk-up appointments will be available until 3:30 p.m., according to the announcement from San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego and other local leaders."We are prioritizing our response to health inequities in the Latino community by prioritizing efforts to help address accessibility barriers that are contributing to Latinos being disproportionately impacted by this pandemic," Fletcher said. "Whether you live in the south, north or east of our county, you should have access to testing and resources to prevent and treat the spread of COVID-19."The consulate will be the first of several locations in a 14-day rotation. Two other confirmed sites include San Luis Rey Church in Oceanside and St. Anthony of Padua in National City. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Marine Corps says one of its fighter jets collided in mid-air with another plane during a refueling operation in a remote desert area of Southern California.The pilot ejected and the other aircraft landed safely.Authorities say the F-35B jet collided with a Lockheed Martin KC-130J tanker around 4 p.m. Tuesday. The pilot who ejected is being treated, and nobody aboard the tanker was hurt.The jet crashed near the Salton Sea, northeast of San Diego.The big tanker landed in Thermal in neighboring Riverside County.Photos from the scene show the plane on its belly in a farm field. 610
