SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver heading the wrong-way on Interstate 805 died following a fiery crash with another vehicle Saturday.A Mitsubishi Lancer traveling the wrong-way on southbound I-805 near the I-8 connector collided with a Toyota SUV just before 3 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The collision sparked a fire, engulfing both vehicles, CHP said.Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to California Highway Patrol. The wrong-way driver later died. Another vehicle received minor damages in the wreck. That driver received minor injuries.CHP was still investigating where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway. It's not clear if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash.A portion of I-805 was closed as crews cleared the scene, but was reopened before 7 a.m. Saturday. 855
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A car owner in Old Town has a warning if you're planning on parking in the popular area: A destructive thief may be lurking.On the morning after Cinco de Mayo, blocks from the festivities, Amy Wysocki discover an unpleasant post-celebration surprise."Just heartbreaking. I instantly broke into tears," said Wysocki.Along Congress Street, Wysocki found a side window of her Lexus on the ground, smashed."Then I came upon the other broken window, which was also a shock and quite a bummer," said Wysocki.Inside her car, about 30 bucks in emergency cash was missing, along with some ibuprofen. Her windows are tinted, but if someone peered inside, some boxes filled with paper products can been seen. Wysocki believes those boxes made her car a target. Wysocki is hardly alone. Along Congress Street, there is a trail of broken glass."It's really sad. It's disgusting," said Wysocki.Police told Wysocki there were seven other "smash-and-grab" break-ins discovered in her neighborhood that same day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A fire destroyed an abandoned building in Barrio Logan early Wednesday morning, but no injuries were reported.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, crews were called to the structure fire in the 3500 block of Dalbergia Street at around 2:50 a.m.By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already consumed much of the building. It took at least an hour to stop the fire from spreading.A deputy fire chief at the scene told 10News that crews have battled fires at this same address multiple times in the past.10News learned a fire occurred at the same location on April 14, and before that on Dec. 26, 2019.Additionally, on Oct. 25, 2019, a fire erupted inside of the same building; a trash can fire was reported on the property six days earlier.The cause of Wednesday’s fire is under investigation, and there is no immediate word on whether the fire is somehow connected to any of the previous incidents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2015 trip Duncan Hunter and his family reportedly took to Italy was a personal vacation unrelated to his work as a member of Congress, according to new court documents. The documents state that Hunter proposed and then canceled a visit to a base in or around Naples, Italy “in conjunction with the hunter family vacation.”According to the documents, “Hunter’s primary motive in attempting to schedule the November 2015 visit to a base was to generate a pretextual purpose so that he could misrepresent his personal use of campaign funds for the family vacation.” RELATED: Federal judge denies Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former North County contractor who pleaded guilty to several charges, including grand theft, received a five-year sentence on Monday.Prosecutors said Marc Morningstar owes thousands of dollars to more than a dozen former customers. Team 10 first exposed Morningstar in early 2017 after several people contacted Team 10 about his questionable business practices. Morningstar pleaded guilty to failure to file a tax return, two counts of grand theft of personal property, and using personal identifying information of another person. He also admitted to two misdemeanors—failure to secure payment of compensation and contracting without a license.The judge sentenced him to local custody. He will receive credit for the time he has already served, which was more than 200 days. He also owes 13 victims nearly ,000, according to deputy district attorney Amy Lafer.During the hearing, Morningstar’s girlfriend Maria Meeuwisse requested to address the court. She said she is a victim of Morningstar as well.“He will not be living with me when he gets out, whenever he does get out. He has used my social security number,” she told the judge. Meeuwisse previously pleaded guilty to her role in the scheme, which included a misdemeanor of contracting without a license and failure to secure payment of compensation.Judge Timothy Walsh said that Morningstar has to “rethink the way he approaches his life.” 1430
