CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Popular South Bay brewery Novo Brazil is expanding its footprint in Chula Vista this month.Novo Brazil Brewery will hold a grand opening for its new brewpub on Dec. 11 in Otay Ranch Town Center. The 12,000-square-foot spot can host more than 950 guests and features a 300-seat restaurant, full bar, indoor and outdoor beer garden, two 14-foot-by-10-foot televisions, shuffleboard tables, and a kid's area with ping-pong tables, video games, and other activities.RELATED: Ballast Point purchased by Chicago-based brewerOn the production side, the brewpub boasts 60 taps with about 40 of those dispensing beer and the rest a combination of Novo's kombucha and hard seltzer creations. Canned cocktails are also in the works for the brewery. In addition to the restaurant and bar, the location will also house a five-barrel brewing system and fermentation tanks.“Our goal is to shift the axis of brewing tourism to southern San Diego attracting downtown and northern San Diego residents and tourists to experience our work and our community. With other local breweries we can put Chula Vista on the map as an official destination of the beer and gastronomic map,” said Tiago Carneiro, founder of Novo Brazil Brewery.Carneiro says they intend to brew more than 100 different beers using the massive system in their first year alone. The new brewery will allow Novo to brew specialty beers and test new recipes. RELATED: San Diego craft beer study shows craft brewery, economic impact growthA small retail section inside to brewpub will also offer Brazilian products, like coffee, to buy.To capture Brazil's colorful flair, Novo's owners hired Brazilian architect, Gustavo Penna, to help develop the brewpub's design. The result is a black and white wave pattern across the building — inside and out— representative of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach. The bar, which owners say is the longest in the South Bay, curls around the facility and guests can kick back in furniture made from Brazilian wood around unique murals from Brazilian artists.“Our story began in Brazil, where we learned the art of brewing and created the most awarded brewery in South America," Carneiro said. "We believe our difference is our Brazilian way of showing the colorful culture and happiness of four homelands. We were fortunate to find a sister city in South Bay, named after our hometown of Belo Horizonte (Beautiful Horizon), where we were warmly welcomed by the entire community."RELATED: Craft beer scene brewing in Chula VistaCarneiro says that Brazilian style of brewing is what earned his family the most awarded beers in Brazil and 17 international beer awards just three years after opening their first South Bay spot.Novo's original location also continues to serve fans on Lane Avenue in Chula Vista. 2825

CHULA VSITA, Calif. (KGTV) -- In a COVID-19 world, kids are seen playing with masks on and keeping their distance. While it may look different to us, for preschool kids, this is all they know.At St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista, when a student and his or her parent arrive, they go through a health screening. If either shows symptoms, the child is sent home.Adults are also not allowed to come into the classrooms and have to stay outside.Glenda Martinez, preschool director of Daniel’s Den, on the campus of St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, said following the new California guidelines is manageable, what can be challenging is helping her young students understand the rules.“It’s really hard for them to understand what’s six feet. They say, ‘Ms. Glenda, I can’t do six feet, I only have two!’ I tell them I know that … but that’s what the square is ... that’s six feet. And nobody can go into their square,” said Martinez. And that’s reflected in how she set up her room. Even though they can’t do carpet time right now, she tried to bring imagination and fun back into the classroom. Each student has their own desk or car, that’s parked in their own square, with their own things inside.Right now, sharing isn’t allowed, but she’s found a way to allow them to socialize safely.“Because they have the same toys, I tell them you can play with one toy. I can play with the same kind of toy up to our edge with our masks on. And there’s not a problem, they’re still separating but they can play the same thing,” Martinez said.Another challenge for Martinez and her staff is explaining what the coronavirus is to four-year-old children. That’s why she’s made books to help them understand and they also sing songs.Coronavirus guidelines have also changed the way kids play outside. They can’t use certain equipment because of social distancing concerns. But as Martinez said, this has forced them to get creative. In the end, Martinez said they’re using these changes as an opportunity to teach their students valuable lessons. Adding, this has “taught us a little bit more about being kind to others.” 2124

China's north plain, one of the most densely populated regions on Earth, is set to become the world's deadliest heat wave zone by the end of the century, scientists say.New scientific research suggests that unless there are heavy cuts in carbon emissions, climate change will lead to humid heat waves that could push the area "against the boundaries of habitability" by 2070.The results of the study of China's northern plain, which includes the capital Beijing, are particularly worrying because many of the region's 400 million people are farmers exposed to climactic conditions. The study said that heat and high humidity can create conditions that kill even healthy people within six hours of being outside."This spot is going to be the hottest spot for deadly heatwaves in the future," said Professor Elfatih Eltahir, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who led the new study."China is currently the largest contributor to the emissions of greenhouse gases, with potentially serious implications to its own population," said Eltahir, who specializes in hydrology and climate science."Continuation of current global emissions may limit the habitability of the most populous region of the most populous country on Earth," said Eltahir. 1261
