UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its hope that parties in the north and south Sudan will make continuous efforts for a peaceful, free, transparent and just referenda in Sudan in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and called for international efforts to create favorable conditions for the January referenda.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counsellor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was addressing an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."We hope the north and south Sudan will keep up the momentum, speed up the preparation for the referenda and ensure that the referenda are conducted in a peaceful, free, transparent and just manner in accordance with the CPA," Yang said.A referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan is scheduled to be conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, as it was stipulated in the CPA inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides."We call on the international community to create a favorable condition for the referenda and refrain from prejudging the outcome," he said. "No party should take unilateral action. No matter what outcome of the referenda might be, peace and stability in Sudan and the region must be ensured."Inhabitants of the south will vote on Jan. 9, 2011 on whether to secede from Sudan or remain united with the rest of the country. On the same day, residents of Abyei, located in the center of the country, will vote separately on whether to retain Abyei's special administrative status in the north or become part of Bahr el- Ghazal state in the south.Since the Security Council held the high-level open meeting on Sudan last month, the peace process in Sudan continues to register positive progress, Yang noted."Voter registration for the referenda for southern Sudan has been concluded smoothly, we commend the north and south Sudan, the African Union and the UN Secretariat for the efforts to this end," he said."Maintaining the peace, stability and development in Sudan is in the interest of the Sudanese people, and it is also conducive to the peace and development in the region and in the African continent," Yang said."China hopes that the north and south will cherish the peace that was hard to come by, and continue their equal dialogue and consultation in order to reach an early agreement on the border demarcation, Abyei and wealth sharing and other outstanding issues, " he said. "This is of great significance to the maintenance of the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region."

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will face the challenge of an aging population over the coming five years and the city has limited experience in dealing with the phenomenon, the Beijing Morning Post reported Saturday.At the end of 2009, registered senior citizens in Beijing numbered 2.27 million, or 18.2 percent of the city's total population of permanent residents, the report said, citing the local government.The city will have a moderately aged society when its aged population reaches 3.24 million in 2015, the report said.Of the city's population of registered senior citizens, 1.94 million, or 85.6 percent, are below the age of 80 years, and 326,000, or 14.4 percent, are above the age of 80 years.In the coming five years, approximately 470,000 senior citizens in Beijing will require nursing.A survey conducted recently by the society and legal system committee of the municipal political consultative conference found that of 4,000-plus respondents, 24.5 percent intended to live in homes for the aged, a level much higher than the 4-percent level the municipal government expected.Some 53.3 percent of respondents said they are willing to spend their twilight years at home. That figure was significantly lower than the 90 percent figure the local government had expected.According to the survey, 99 percent of local citizens born after 1980 said they would not be able to look after their parents during their old age.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor, Jia Qinglin, attended a ground-breaking ceremony for construction of Beijing Hyundai Motor's third auto plant in Shunyi District in suburban Beijing Sunday. Prior to the ceremony, Jia met with Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo and other guests. China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have been upgrading relations, as well as political and cultural exchanges, since the forging of diplomatic ties in 1992, Jia noted.Trade between the two countries topped 150 billion U.S. dollars during January-September this year, up 36.7 percent year on year. MADRID, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Spain will vigorously boost the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain, and turn a new chapter of bilateral trade and economic cooperation, a Chinese official said here on Wednesday.Gao Hucheng, China's international trade representative and vice minister of commerce, told reporters in Madrid that Li's ongoing Europe tour is the first foreign trip by Chinese leaders in 2011 and the choice of Spain as the first leg demonstrates the importance that China has attached to its ties with Spain and its strong will to promote cooperation with Spain.Li arrived here Tuesday for a three-day official visit to Spain.
