SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- While many sports have made their return during the COVID-19 pandemic, bowling alleys have remained closed.The Mira Mesa Lanes have been a very important part of the Mira Mesa community for years. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. They reopened for a few weeks in June, but state restrictions forced them to shut down once again.The alley has been closed ever since."So, they are really on the brink," said Greim. "They are already behind on their rent and it's looking pretty bleak."The GoFundMe page was organized to help Mira Mesa Lanes pay their rent while the alley sits in limbo amid the pandemic.“It’s to help them survive long enough to not be closed permanently,” said Greim. 1625

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A judge ordered California's attorney general to release police misconduct records predating Jan. 1, when new transparency legislation took effect.San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard B. Ulmer, Jr. on Friday also rejected arguments by Attorney General Xavier Becerra that his office should not have to release records of local law enforcement.The legislation was designed to guarantee public access to disciplinary records involving investigations into officer shootings, use-of-force incidents and incidents involving officer misconduct.The tentative ruling was a win for the First Amendment Coalition and National Public Radio member KQED-FM, which sued Becerra's office for records under the legislation."Judge Ulmer's order sends the clear message that the Attorney General is not above California law," said David Snyder, the coalition's executive director.In response, Becerra's office said Friday it would release records from before 2019 but only those regarding Department of Justice officers. The office said in a statement that requiring the office to release records involving other departments "would result in duplication of efforts."The judge ordered the attorney general's office to meet with the coalition and KQED to work out the logistics of releasing records.Ulmer said the 1st District Court of Appeal had already decided that the law is retroactive. He also dismissed the argument that making the attorney general provide records of local law enforcement would be burdensome.Ulmer said lawmakers could not have been oblivious to the potential cost of carrying out the legislation, and "the people will likely be agnostic as to which tax-funded agency foots the bill." 1724

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two years ago the Norton Sound was docked in San Diego Bay and burned for several days. Now, San Diego is hiring an outside consultant to look into the cargo fire. San Diego Fire gave 10News a statement Friday. They didn’t offer specifics about what the consultant might recommend, but say the focus is to determine if any additional equipment or training is needed when dealing with emergencies on the bay. Back in 2017, Harbor Police told 10News, “It was to my understanding that the furthest a firefighter made it was 6 feet before they started getting pushed about the fire.” Looking back, even businesses remember how horrible the smoke was over the days the fire burned, “People stopped sitting outside and employees complained about it affecting their health.” says Edgewater Grill assistant manager, Sergio Velasco. While the smoke bellowed out of the ship for nearly a week, no one was injured and the fire stayed contained and didn’t spread to any other structures. SAN DIEGO - San Diego photographers are taking advantage of the serene and luminous glow of the surf this week.Eerie neon blue waves have been seen against San Diego's shore this week, creating some rare photo opportunities. The phenomenon is created when a red tide, which is algae bloom filled with phytoplankton called "dinoflagellates," rolls off waves onto or near the shoreline.The organisms react with a bioluminescent chemical reaction when jostled as a way to warn predators, to lure prey, or communicate within their species. The blue glow can be created by a simple step in the water or crash of a wave.IN SAN DIEGO...The current red tide is being caused by massive numbers of dinoflagellates including "Ceratium falcatiforme" and "Lingulodinium polyedra," according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is not affiliated with The E.W. Scripps Co., the parent company of this station. Researchers do not know how long this current red tide will last or "the full spatial range of the bloom." In the past, blooms have lasted anywhere from a week to a month or more.San Diego's last red tide event in September 2013 lasted one week, while the previous one in October 2011 lasted a month, according to researchers. Previous ones have lasted even longer.Monday's event was captured from La Jolla to Encinitas. Scripps recommends viewing the marine event from a dark beach at least two hours after sunset, though visibility is not guaranteed.IS IT HARMFUL?...In some areas, a red tide can be toxic to local marine life. In California, the majority are not caused by species that produce toxins, such as domoic acid, according to researchers. However, it's still best to be cautious around the bloom.The Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System at Scripps samples the water for potential harmful algal toxins weekly.Red tides are unpredictable events and do not always give off bioluminescence, Scripps said.BUT WHY IS IT RED?...The red coloration is due to the high number of organisms in the water. During the day, organisms will swim to the surface to soak in sunlight. Each cell contains a little sunscreen that gives off the color, according to Scripps.When these organisms gather at the surface for sunlight, they can create an especially intense red.Researchers say a combination of physical, chemical, and biological factors are the driving forces behind allowing red tides to form. 2586
