LAKESIDE (CNS) - A neighbor helped a 76-year-old woman to safety from a house fire today, authorities said.At 10:31 a.m., San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a residential structure fire in the 11400 block of Pinehurst Drive, according to Sgt. Greg Hampton.No other structures were threatened and the fire was extinguished shortly after deputies and fire personnel arrived, Hampton said.The woman suffered from minor burns and smoke inhalation and paramedics took her to UC San Diego Medical Center, the sergeant said.Sheriff's bomb and arson detectives responded to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. 644

LARGO, Fla. — The family of Linus Phillip, a man killed by a Largo Police officer in Florida on Friday, is accusing detectives of using the dead man's finger to gain access to his cell phone.On Friday, police approached Phillip's car at a WaWa gas station in Clearwater. Police said the vehicle he was driving had illegally tinted windows. While standing near Phillip's car, the officers claim they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Police claim Phillip tried to drive away and use his car as a deadly weapon. One officer, Matthew Steiner, says he was dragged by the car when he tried to open the door and feared for his life.Phillip was shot and killed by police. He did not have a gun in his possession. Steiner, a seven year veteran with no disciplinary action against him, was injured during the incident but is OK.Phillip's family is demanding surveillance video from the incident at the WaWa gas station in Clearwater where he was killed. Police claim the encounter was not caught on video, only officers giving Phillip CPR.The family lawyer, John Trevena was surprised."There was no denial of the video to the family so this is the first I've heard of that," said Trevena.The family also claims that detectives used Phillip's lifeless finger to access his phone at the Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home."So they are allowed to pull him out of the refrigerator and use a dead mans finger to get to his phone. Its disgusting," said Armstrong.Police did not comment on the allegations, citing that there is a still an active investigation into the case.Phillip's mother, Martha Hicks started crying during an interview on Wednesday."They killed him after his 30th birthday. Their young daughter lost her battle with leukemia last year.Their son, Isaac is 16 months old."My son is no longer going to go have a father, or to make his dad proud. (CNS) - A woman who was hospitalized after being shot with a beanbag projectile during a protest in La Mesa has filed court papers seeking to force the La Mesa Police Department to release the involved officer's name.The petition asks that a San Diego Superior Court judge order the city of La Mesa and the police department to produce the name of the officer who fired a beanbag projectile at 59-year-old Leslie Furcron on the night of May 30.The department has not released the officer's name, though La Mesa police Chief Walt Vasquez issued a statement earlier this month assuring Furcron, "her family and the public that this unfortunate incident will be fully investigated, to include an in-depth look at our crowd control practices."The city and police department could not immediately be reached for comment on the petition filed Friday.Furcron was outside LMPD headquarters with a crowd of fellow protesters demonstrating against police brutality when she was struck in the forehead by what her attorney, Dante Pride, described as a "flying blackjack" and a "metal projectile bean bag," leaving her hospitalized in an intensive- care unit in a medically induced coma.The petition states that Furcron suffered "multiple facial fractures," has not yet regained sight in her left eye, and "will face a lifetime of recovery from the injuries."The petition alleges the La Mesa Police Department declined to disclose records that included the officer's name following a California Public Records Act request from Furcron's attorneys, citing an ongoing investigation and findings that releasing the name could endanger the officer's safety.The petitioner argues that courts have held that releasing officer names in such instances "is in the best interest of justice." LA MESA (KGTV) -- A businessman attacked a group of reporters on a La Mesa sidewalk. It all started with reports of lewd acts outside his business.La Mesa Police Department investigators are looking into harassment claims after a disturbing video captured outside a local business circulated online. A snap shot from that video appears to show a man and a woman outside Peter's Men Apparel, a local men's clothing retailer on La Mesa Blvd. over the weekend.The man in the video appears to have his hands up a woman's shirt.REPORT: La Mesa Police looking into harassment claims at local businessPolice said they've received at least two crime reports — one for battery and one for lewd act in public — in regards to separate incidents at the store on Saturday, Jan. 18.News crews returned to area near where the incident occurred to talk with the owner at Peter's Men Apparel. A man outside of the store started assaulting a photographer and then began hitting another reporter, which resulted in a brief fight.Video from the attack shows the man cursing at everyone, attacking a photographer, and slapping a phone out of reporter's hand before walking into the store.La Mesa police officers responded to the scene and are working with the reporters to gather information about the attack.The crews that were assaulted will be pressing charges.As for the incidents over the weekend, police haven't named the suspect. La Mesa investigators have not identified the man in the video.10News reporter Mimi Elkalla spoke with the owner of Peter's Men Apparel, Peter Carzis, on Monday and he seemed to laugh off the situation regarding the lewd video.
