ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta police have accused a suspect of felony murder and aggravated assault in a shooting that killed an 8-year-old girl near the site of an earlier police shooting.Police said Wednesday that they issued warrants a day earlier for 19-year-old Julian Conley in the slaying of Secoriea Turner. Conley's attorney, Jackie Patterson, said Conley turned himself in Wednesday. Patterson says Conley was peacefully protesting and witnessed the shooting but did not open fire himself. Secoriea was fatally shot on the Fourth of July while riding in an SUV with her mother and another adult near the Wendy's restaurant where Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old Black man, was killed by a white police officer on June 12. 730
ASPEN, Colo. — Rachel Zoe says her 9-year-old son, Sky, survived a 40-foot drop from a ski lift in Colorado on Sunday. The fashion designer and former reality TV star opened up about the scary incident on her Instagram story on Monday.Zoe said “ski patrol heroes” saved her son by quickly putting a mat under where they thought the boy would fall. She explained that she thinks the incident could have "easily" been prevented if a ski operator had stopped the lift when they saw Sky wasn’t on from the beginning.A representative for the Aspen Skiing Company said in a statement that it received a report of the child hanging from the lift at its Buttermilk ski area at about 2:48 p.m. When crews responded to lift, the representative says the boy was being held by an instructor and his father, who were on the chair with the child.“The boy was released and dropped to the pads below, where ski patrol was on scene,” said Jeff Hanle, VP of Communications at Aspen Skiing Company. “He was treated by patrol, brought to the base area and transported to the hospital by ambulance for examination.”Although the boy is “sore and banged up a bit,” Zoe says her son is in “great spirits” and is a “brave champion.”Zoe also posted a video of Sky explaining how he’s feeling and walking around for the camera.“Hi everyone. I’m Ok. I’m just sore,” Sky said. “And to show you that I’m OK, I’m going to stand up. See look, I can stand up and I can walk. And I’m totally fine. It’s just I’m a little sore. I’m kind of hurting, but I’m fine.”Zoe said she and her husband, Rodger Berman, have never been grateful for seeing their child do the most simple tasks, like walking, talking and laughing.“Truth be told, Sky was more brave then either of us and we continue to just kiss, hug and simply just stare at him until further notice,” wrote Zoe. “Hug your babies extra from us today.” 1877
At first glance, you may not notice what's different about this box of cereal. Maybe it's just one of those special editions that's in stores for a short time. But if you take a closer look you might ask, what's up with that? When Naomi Frierson walked into her local Walmart and down the aisle, her focus was getting her mom a box of her favorite cereal."I just picked it up and I kind of looked at it," Frierson said. "And I figured it was one of those special edition type of boxes. ... I didn't think much of it."But when she got home, her husband noticed."We proceed to look at it further and realize that not only are there mugshots but they're serial killers," Frierson said. "Not the C-E-R-E-A-L kind unfortunately."The box of "Life" cereal is covered with people synonymous with death. Larry, the Quaker Oats mascot is Jeffrey Dahmer. And instead of being made with 20 whole grains, it's made with 20 whole brains."And then on the nutrition panel you've got stuff like instead of cholesterol it says chloroform," Frierson said. "Down here it says cyanide."Frierson said she was creeped out, but her husband loved it."He immediately recognized all of the different players in the game," Frierson said. "And he thought it was just the coolest thing ever and assured me that it must be art."He was right. The box was a class project made by Lauren Miller, a senior art student at the University of South Florida."I kind of just wanted it to blend in with everything else," Miller said. "I took a bunch of pictures that I found online of serial killers and I used Photoshop to add them to the Life cereal box. I just thought it would be interesting to use Life cereals since these people did take away lives."Miller has a large version of the box in her studio but wanted to see how people reacted to this smaller version in the community.Frierson said, "I had people on my personal Facebook when I posted that thing like, 'Oh my gosh I need to have that. How can I get one? Are there more?'"Frierson said she's keeping this box, and Miller is exploring creating more to sell.Miller said she left a note on the box saying it was art and had already been paid for. But for Frierson, the initial jitters and overall experience was well worth the price."I think (it was) three dollars well spent for an interesting piece of art," Frierson said.A creepy class project, taking on a life of its own."I would say a solid 'A' so if you didn't get an 'A' I'll call your professor," Frierson said. 2539
AVENAL, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an inmate at a central California prison died of complications from the coronavirus Saturday, becoming the state’s 79th person to have a fatal case of COVID-19 while they were incarcerated. The Avenal State Prison inmate died at a hospital. The prisoner’s name was not released. There have been 15,872 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state prison system. Advocates say jails and prisons nationwide are prime locations for the virus to spread between inmates and staff. Officials have released hundreds of inmates to decrease jail and prison populations across the country during the pandemic. 648
AstraZeneca is the latest drugmaker to announce promising Phase 3 trial results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate. On Monday, AstraZeneca said its two-shot vaccine candidate has been 90% effective thus far along with no safety concerns.“These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, the chief executive of the study. Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90% effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply. Today’s announcement is only possible thanks to the many volunteers in our trial, and the hard working and talented team of researchers based around the world.”The company added in its press release that its vaccine candidate offers two distinct advantages over vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna — it's cheaper to produce, and does not need to be stored in ultra-cold conditions before use.AstraZeneca added that the company would "immediately" prepare regulatory paperwork to seek Emergency Use Listing status from the World Health Organization.AstraZeneca is just the latest drug company to report encouraging results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate.Last week, Pfizer said it had submitted Emergency Use Authorization paperwork to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) after a final analysis of its vaccine candidate proved to be 95% effective in preventing COVID-19. The FDA is expected to approve the drug in the coming weeks.Moderna has also said that early results show its vaccine candidate to be 95% effective, and is on track to have the drug approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the end of the year.AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna are all shattering records for vaccine development. The three vaccines are all on track to be approved for widespread use in uder a year. Typically, it takes several years for a vaccine to go from development to approval. The announcement comes as COVID-19 is spreading around the world at a rate not previously seen since the pandemic began. And while all three companies are pre-producing their vaccines in the hope that it will be approved, health experts warn that they won't be widely available until spring 2021. 2247
