Tired: Mr. Monopoly. Wired: Ms. Monopoly. One of America's most recognizable board games is getting an upgrade. Hasbro is debuting a new game celebrating women's empowerment -- Ms. Monopoly, marking the first time in Monopoly history when a new mascot will be featured on the cover of the game. The twist? In Ms. Monopoly, female players will get more money.Unlike the classic game, women will collect 240 Monopoly bucks when they pass "go," while male players will collect the usual 200. The idea is to create a game where women make more than men, the first game to do so, according to Hasbro. It's "a fun new take on the game that creates a world where women have an advantage often enjoyed by men," the company said in a statement. "But don't worry, if men play their cards right, they can make more money too."That's not the only difference, though. Instead of buying property, players will invest in inventions created by women -- things like Wi-Fi and chocolate chip cookies. But no worries -- mainstays such as jail, luxury taxes and chance cards are still included. The announcement of Ms. Monopoly comes a few weeks after the company received criticism for Monopoly Socialism -- a tongue-in-cheek game that sparked debate for its flippant handling of socialism. Hasbro also debuted Monopoly for Millennials in 2018, poking fun at stereotypical millennial trends such as avocado toast and veganism.Ms. Monopoly will be available for pre-order beginning September 10. 1483
This week, Felicity Huffman and 13 others agreed to plead guilty in the college admission scandal, hoping to get a lighter prison sentence. But for those standing their ground, including actress Lori Loughlin and more than a dozen others, prosecutors issued additional charges against them. Those charges include fraud and money laundering, which can bring up to 20 years in prison. Justin Paperny, who is dubbed as “prison coach” for his work in helping people prepare for prison life, was hired by several people involved in the college admission scandal to help them get ready to spend time behind bars. “Well they never imagined in a million years they'd be caught up in a federal indictment,” Paperny says of his clients. Paperny’s advice to those involved: if you did it, own it. “If you're a defendant and you're guilty, you should run not walk to the U.S. Attorney's Office,” he says. White collar criminals can easily survive minimum security prison life, Paperny says. His past clients tell him prison isn't even the hardest part. "They've told me, in retrospect, that the easiest part of the sanction was federal prison,” he recalls. “That the time before they went in was incredibly harder."A judge will decide how long each defendant serves, and history shows judges look kindly on plea deals. Sentencing could happen in several weeks, at the earliest. 1378
There has been talk around the country lately of a recession and what to do to prevent it from happening.President Donald Trump has pushed the idea of significantly lowering interest rates. So, what would that mean for the average American? "What it does is it shifts the economic balance of power towards borrowers and away from lenders,” said Miles Kimball, Professor of Economics at the University of Colorado Boulder. “And guess what, people who borrow money are people who are more eager to spend than lenders." This could make getting a loan easier and more affordable.Kimball says if interest rates drop, it encourages people to spend money they've been saving rather than leave it in the bank."All of a sudden you think about a zero percent loan, obviously the economic benefit is huge there," said a new home buyer, Todd.Zillow says the average price of a home is 1,000. With a 3.8% interest rate, a payment would be ,144, but even if the rate dropped to just 1%, it would be 8. Although that sounds amazing, banks would have to charge fees because they would be handing out more money than depositors are putting in. 1146
