BALTIMORE - Chyler Leigh may be known for her role in Supergirl, but on Saturday she had the opportunity to meet real-life superheroes in Baltimore. The former Grey's Anatomy actress teamed up with her husband, Nathan West, and the organization Singing for Superheroes to help raise money for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Leigh and West are in a band, East of Eli, and on Saturday they filmed a music video with cancer patient Ashley Hackman. “This is an opportunity to bring some joy, some brightness, some light, in a place where obviously it’s great to get a little extra sunshine I’m sure," said Leigh.Singing for Superheroes was started by Steven Battey and Alix Petersen in 2016, and it uses music to empower children with illness and disabilities. They have made multiple music videos with cancer patients across the country to raise money, awareness, and spread their message of empowerment. “It’s amazing though because we are parents, we have three kids of our own, and that was a huge reason to do this when it came about. To have an opportunity to work on this, it was a no-brainer, we had to do this because it was that important to us. You know to lend that hand, give some love, spread some love,” explained West. And soon after arriving at the hospital, West and Leigh learned they wouldn't be the only ones spreading love and hope. “What’s funny too is we come here to spread that love and give the gift that keeps on giving with the music, but at the same time these kids keep on blessing you over and over again. I’m going like, ‘Really? You are so happy and amazing and I want to just take you home, you know?’ It’s incredible,” West said. "Oh they are warriors. Oh my goodness, just to see the joy on their faces, and it’s just sometimes even the little things, but how strong these kids are it’s absolutely amazing. We just keep saying over and over again we are so honored to be a part of it,” added on Leigh. The song in the music video is titled "No giving up" and aims to spread the message that those touched by cancer are not alone and to keep pushing through. "We just want to encourage kids to never give up, or anyone going through what they are going through with cancer," said Battey who helped write the song. Battey is known for writing songs for artists like Justin Bieber, Madonna, Flo-Rida, Bruno Mars, and more. He lost his mother to cancer in 2004 and said he thought of her when writing this song. "We just wanted to encourage the kids that are going through it to keep on fighting, and we thought "No giving up" was the perfect title,” Battey continued to say. “The song really transcends. Yes, we are here with the kids and cancer and stuff, but it can go far beyond that. This song is really relatable in so many ways. We are not just speaking to the kids, but we are speaking to the families, to you, to anybody who needs a moment to remember, and some support and love to say hey, I’m going to keep going, keep moving forward, keep fighting,” explained West. East of Eli and Singing for Superhero's music video will be released on Tuesday and sponsors P&G and Giant Foods say they will donate for every video view up to 10,000 views.If you want to donate more money to the Johns Hopkins Children Center you can click here. 3401

As wildfires scorch parts of the country, COVID-19 has sidelined a critical group of firefighters: prison inmates. The shortage comes as states are on pace for what could be a relentless fire season.CalFire, the state agency tasked with fighting and preventing wildfires in California, has already responded to over 4,100 fires as of June this year. Compare that to an average of 2,500 in recent years.“This year, we’re seeing something more typical of year’s past, we’re seeing these small starts that are growing into bigger fires," said Thomas Shoots, a CalFire public information officer. "We have a 25,000-acre fire burning up in Fresno now.” Responsible for protecting millions of acres across the state, CalFire relies on help from crews of inmates from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.“These are inmates who’ve chosen to help out California by joining these fire crews, and they’re a huge resource for the state,” said Shoots.Roughly 2,200 prison inmates are trained to work on the fire line, but COVID-19 has depleted their ranks.Of the state’s 118 staffed crews, 41 were quarantined because of prison outbreaks as of July 16, eliminating hundreds of firefighters at a critical time.States like Arizona, Colorado, Washington State, and Oregon also deploy inmates to wildfires, but in far fewer numbers than California.“We’re sitting much shorter than we have been in the past, but we’ve also taken a lot of aggressive steps to make sure we have enough folks for when these fires happen,” said Shoots.The state is hiring 858 paid firefighters to fill the void. They could also turn to the California National Guard and out-of-state resources if needed.“It continues to be a concern that COVID-19 could come in and decimate our staffing, but that hasn’t happened because we’re taking every precaution we can.”Like wildfires, COVID-19 has proved destructive and unpredictable, but firefighters stand ready to battle them both. 1968

  

At first, your loved one with Alzheimer's may not react well to wearing a mask or having to wash their hands consistently, but the Alzheimer's Foundation of America says there are things you can do to ensure they are safe during this time."You have to do your best to try, but you also have to be forgiving of yourself and understand that there are limits to what you can do. Some of the nice things about these masks are some of them can be lovely and fun. You can pick masks that have themes or that have resonance with that person," Dr. Allison B. Reiss with The Alzheimer's Foundation of America, told KIVI-TV.For those who don't like the consistent handwashing, Dr. Reiss says buying soaps with a fragrance can make a big difference and encourage them to wash their hands more often."I think a lot of us have that, that olfactory memory, so a scent that you enjoy brings such good feelings. Like cinnamon apple smells of apple pie and childhood, vanilla. You know many people love the scent of a warm home kitchen or the scent of outdoors and flowers and gardens and grass. As some companies consider making work-from-home permanent, others see the value in creating a workplace for employees. "We've always been flexible in our workplace, we've always allowed people to work from home if they want, and what we learned is that people do want a place that is their own that we can come into," said Reid Carr, CEO of the marketing agency Red Door Interactive. After years of leasing an office in downtown San Diego, the company wanted to create its own space, designed to foster collaboration and growth."We were excited when we found it, we had a vision for how this whole process was going to go down," said Carr. The company purchased nearly half an acre of property to create a campus-style workplace. But after the pandemic hit, they overhauled the design to ensure it was a space employees not only wanted to go to but could feel safe in.The new campus will incorporate touchless features throughout the buildings, like doors and water bottle filling stations. They're creating outdoor meeting spaces with heaters and shades so that they can be used year-round. And inside, they're investing in the best available HVAC systems for air filtration."I'm learning at all this stuff as we go, but we're looking at hospital grade stuff. The perspective we took is there's always going to be flus and colds, so why not do these things that will help keep people from spreading disease," said Carr. In addition to having their own socially distanced desks, employees will have designated areas separate from visitors, including the kitchen. One building will be the epicenter of conference rooms so they can be easily cleaned more frequently."Certain things never change. You want to feel like you belong to something, you want to connect with people," said Carr. The company plans to break ground on its new campus in early September, with plans to complete the project in April 2021. 1916
