SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is rolling out the second phase of the polystyrene foam and single-use plastics ordinance as the Memorial Day weekend kicks off. Starting May 24, a ban on the sale and distribution of egg cartons, food service ware and food trays made from polystyrene foam begins. The ban includes bowls, plates, trays, cups, lids and other similar items designed for single-use. According to the city, polystyrene foam doesn’t biodegrade and can be mistaken for food by marine life and other animals. Acceptable alternatives include recyclable plastic, aluminum and recyclable paper products, the city says. Some businesses that make less than 0,000 are exempt until 2020. “The City’s goal is to achieve zero waste by 2040,” said the City’s Environmental Services Department Director, Mario X. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego announced Tuesday that the transformed Super 8 motel in Egger Highlands will be used to temporarily serve families and children experiencing homelessness amid COVID-19. The city's purchase and transformation of the motel was approved by the City Council in 2017. The transitional housing units will eventually be used to serve those enrolled in the San Diego Misdemeanants At-Risk Track. The program was created by the City Attorney's Office for chronic misdemeanor offenders with acute drug addiction, according to the city. For now, the recently-renovated motel will provide temporary housing for children and families struggling with homelessness. “We’re looking at every opportunity to help those families and children experiencing homelessness during these trying times,” Mayor Faulconer said. “The rehabilitation of this motel couldn’t come at a better time as the need for temporary shelter has never been greater. I want to thank City Attorney Elliott for partnering with me to provide safety and relief to so many families as we fight to stop the spread of this deadly virus.”The city started moving families to motel rooms in March to allow for proper physical distancing. “During this challenging time, it's more important than ever to ensure our most vulnerable community members are protected,” City Attorney Elliott said. “I am gratified to be able to transition our S.M.A.R.T. on Palm facility to provide temporary emergency housing for families in this time of dire need.”The facility has 42 transitional housing rooms, 39 double-bed units, and three units that meet the Americans with Disability Act standards, the city says. 1693

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Food and Drug Administration is responding Friday to a Team 10 investigation launched after San Diego women complained about Monat Global hair care.Dana Sohovich talked exclusively with 10News, saying the company’s hair products caused severe hair loss and bald spots. Sohovich has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging it falsely promised her “longer, fuller, stronger” hair. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The crowds at San Diego International Airport grew Friday night, as travelers kicked off the holiday travel weekend. AAA predicts a record-breaking 115 million Americans will travel this holiday season, up nearly 4 percent from last year. Of those travelers, AAA estimates 105 million people will drive, 7 million will fly, and 4 million will take the train, bus, or cruise ships. According to AAA, airports around the US will be busiest between Dec. 21 through 23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Downtown Central Courthouse plans to resume jury trials in two weeks after a six-month postponement during the shutdown, but there are concerns about the massive backlog of cases and keeping jurors safe. Non-jury trials are currently in progress through a remote virtual process.“I do have an incredible backlog, not only in criminal but also in civil cases,” said San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne on Monday. So far, 900 jury duty summonses have been sent out for telephonic standby for in-person appearances in groups of 70 people. “The jury lounge [holds] 500 to 600 people but instead of that were going to bring in 70 [people and] socially distance them,” she added.Those people who are selected for jury will sit in courtrooms which have been retrofitted with protective measures like plexiglass barriers. Judge Alksne said there around about 2,400 criminal cases ready for trial that must be reset. Beyond that, there are thousands of other criminal proceedings to get to. “There's about 17,000 other things that need to be reset before they can even get to a trial,” she added.Civil cases are another obstacle. A spokesperson for the Courthouse confirmed that there are approximately 54,000 civil cases that are pending. There are about 2,800 that are ready to go to trial but Judge Alksne said Monday that civil jury trials likely won't resume until sometime in 2021.“The only way that I'm going to beat this backlog is if jurors come in for jury service so if you feel like you're able to serve, we would ask you to respond to the summons and come into court and help us get the jury trials started again,” she added.She noted that civil bench trials will start in mid-October and in-person arraignments will start on November 1st. 1792
