BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for more confidence in the country's stable economic growth and gaining more strength to better people's livelihood.     He made the calls during an inspection tour in northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province from June 26 to 28, one of the country's old industrial bases and important granaries.     Hu encouraged people in Heilongjiang to seize the opportunity as China moved to revitalize its old industrial bases, to overcome the difficulties and maintain a steady economic growth and ensure people's livelihood. He encouraged farmers to increase grain production and boost agricultural modernization, so as to ensure the country's grain security.     More supportive policies for farmers are on the way, he said, hoping that farmers could increase their incomes with improved policies and technologies.     Hu also visited an oil field, a military camp, a school for intellectually challenged children, a human resources market, and a residential community which houses people who formerly lived in shanties.

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao urged Friday to build a powerful air force to meet the demands of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) for missions in the 21th century.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remark when meeting delegates of the 11th CPC Congress of the PLA Air Force in Beijing.     Hu asked the Air Force's officers to constantly improve the ability to win local wars as well as accomplish diversified military tasks. BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms since early the week have swept a wide swathe of south China, leaving dozens people dead or missing and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate.     In Jiangxi Province, two people were killed, three more were missing and more than 100,000 have been evacuated following the heaviest rain this summer, local flood control authorities said. The rain damaged 178,000 hectares of crops, caused 8,231 houses to collapse, and incurred a direct economic loss of 1.31 billion yuan (191.7 million U.S. dollars). BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, on Wednesday discussed bilateral relations and the A/H1N1 flu epidemic during a telephone conversation.     Hu recalled that during their meeting at the Group of 20 summit in London in early April, he and Obama agreed to work together to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century.     The two leaders also reached extensive consensus on the establishment of the mechanism of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues, joint efforts to tackle the international financial crisis, and enhanced coordination and cooperation on major global and regional issues, Hu said.     "Now, both countries are seriously implementing the consensus," the Chinese president said.     "China is willing to work with the United States to push for a healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations," he said.     Obama, for his part, said the meeting with Hu was important because it outlined the future development of bilateral cooperation and made a good start on the China-U.S. strategic dialogue.     The United States appreciated China's efforts to promote bilateral relations, he said.     The Chinese president expressed sincere condolences over the A/H1N1 flu epidemic that has hit parts of the United States, and said the Chinese government has started emergency measures to prevent a spread of the disease.     "We are willing to keep contact with the World Health Organization, the United States and other parties concerned, and strengthen cooperation to jointly confront this public health challenge," Hu said.     Obama said his country has adopted effective measures against the disease and will continue to keep a close eye on the outbreak.     The U.S. president said he was looking forward to meeting with Hu again during a meeting of leaders of the Group of Eight nations and developing countries in Italy. Obama said he was also looking forward to visiting China.     The two leaders also exchanged views on such issues as the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the situation in South Asia.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung Soo described Friday the rapid growth of bilateral ties with China as "unprecedented".     "We have witnessed over five million ROK and Chinese people visit each other's country and the two-way trade volume expand 26 times bigger during the 17 years since ROK and China forged a diplomatic relationship", Han said. Han made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua on the sideline of a spring conference of the Institute of International Finance in Beijing.     He said being neighbors, cultural similarity and friendship between the two peoples offered a solid foundation for the two nations to foster ties.     China and the ROK agreed to upgrade their "comprehensive and cooperative partnership" to "strategic cooperative partnership" in May, 2008 during the ROK president Lee Myung-bak's first visit to China. After the test, it also fired some short-range missiles.     "The status of a non-nuclear peninsula is not only a must for the peace and stability on the peninsula, but also for that of East Asia and the world," Han said, expressing his hope that China, which chairs the six-party talks, could continue to play its positive and constructive role.     Launched in 2003, the six-party talks grouped China, DPRK, ROK, the United States, Russia and Japan. The talks have been stalled since the top negotiators last met in Beijing last December.
