The Crossroads of the West gun show returned to the fairgrounds Saturday, two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning the sale of guns and ammo at the venue. That law doesn't take effect until 2021, allowing the gun show to continue until then."It's been a mainstay for 30 years in San Diego and a small group of extremists tried to get it canceled and were successful for just a few months last year, but fortunately the courts stepped in and said, 'no you can't discriminate against a group based on what they described as their culture," Michael Schwartz, executive director of San Diego County Gun Owners, told reporters Saturday. Assembly Bill 893, introduced in February by State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-78), argues California shouldn't have a role in facilitating gun sales. Gov. "The state just shouldn't have a role in facilitating the flow of guns into neighborhoods where children are killed." Protesters are expected outside of the show Saturday to counter gun advocates."They are coming back to finish off our families by calling their gun shows ‘family friendly,’" Rose Ann Sharp, founder of NeverAgainCA, said. "It gives a perverse new meaning to 'women and children first.' "We're the ones who are educating about gun safety and I think when you have an environment where you can talk about it and educate people, I think that's an important part of curbing gun violence."In September 2018, the Del Mar Fairgrounds Board of Directors voted to suspend the Crossroads of the West show until the state developed new safety policies for gun shows. Crossroads appealed the suspension and was granted the right to return in June 2019.The show's contract runs through 2020.Schwartz admits they don't know what will happen to the show after the next year, but they're hopeful the court system will rule in their favor once again."We believe there is going to be some kind of court decision and there is the possibility that it will be delayed and have to move its way up through the court system," Schwartz said. "But we're very confident that the court's going to see that this type of discrimination against this group of people — that they simply consider undesirable — is not right. "The fairgrounds is a state-owned, regional asset and just because one city decides they don't like a culture, that doesn't mean that they can kick them out of town ... Del Mar doesn't get to dictate who they like and who they dislike." 3252

DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. -- A missing Oregon baby was found naked and lying in the dirt by a detective last week near Bend, according to authorities.On May 10, deputies say a man, identified as Brandon Blouin, came out of the woods asking for law enforcement after losing his 1-year-old son.Blouin told deputies that he and the baby's 18-year-old mother, along with the child, were staying in the forest when the woman walked away and didn’t return.Blouin went looking for the woman. He told deputies he set the 1-year-old down and left him.Deputies say Blouin is believed to have been under the influence of a controlled substance when he decided to walk away.The child was found by the detective about one mile away from the vehicle the family had been staying in. The baby was found lying naked in the dirt, according to deputies. Blouin was arrested on several charges. 889

(KGTV) - The COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns are impacting cities across San Diego, and the seaside village of Del Mar is no different.Alex and William Rhett opened a childrens' book store in Del Mar a year ago."The pandemic killed us as a business, but the community brought us back, and here we are," said Alex.The couple just opened Sandcastle Tales at its new location in the Del Mar Plaza."We feel overwhelmed, excited, happy what else very, very thankful," said Alex.The bookstore and the just-opened School of Rock are part of an effort to attract younger crowds to the plaza, located at 1555 Camino Del Mar"You just can't apply the same old formula that you had before, so you have to get a new mix of tenants, a new synergistic group of people that bring a variety of age groups to the plaza," said Patty Brutten.Patty and Marc Brutten spent roughly forty-million dollars buying the plaza in 2017."The successes have been very few and far between. It's been a long hard road," said Patty.Competition from One Paseo, Flower Hill Promenade, and online retail has made it tough to attract new tenants."I don't think anyone else would have stuck with it like we do just because we live here, we're community members," said Patty.Since the pandemic hit, some businesses have closed their doors. Lorna Jane, an athletic apparel recently closed. Prep Kitchen is closed just up the street, and a newly opened barbershop is no longer operating. But two new restaurants are moving into the plaza. Outdoor concerts on the deck continue to be popular. "We really hope everyone can really rediscover the plaza," said Patty.City leaders say retail and restaurants are struggling, but the most significant hit came when the San Diego County Fair was canceled, and the horse races went on without spectators. "Biggest loss is sales tax from the fairgrounds, and that's close to a million dollars," said Del Mar City Councilman Dave Druker. The city has benefited though from an increase in people at the beach."The beaches have been extremely busy. Instead of 10,000 we're getting closer to 40,000 on a weekend," said Druker.Back at Sandcastle Tales, the owners are grateful for another chance."I feel like one of the best opportunities I have ever had, and we want to give back," said Rhett.
