(KGTV) – A U.S. Army veteran who has been living in Mexico for the past eight years found out Thursday that he is being granted citizenship.Hector Barajas was granted a full pardon by Governor Jerry Brown in 2017 for a conviction that led to his deportation, according to the ACLU.In 2001, Barajas was convicted of shooting at an occupied motor vehicle and sentenced to prison, leading to the deportation.Barajas has been waiting for a decision since he passed the English and civic portions of his naturalization requirements in 2016.RELATED: U.S. army veteran fights to return after deportation?In 2017, Barajas filed a lawsuit in an effort to compel officials to make a decision on whether or not to grant him citizenship. The lawsuit was dismissed after the Department of Homeland Security made their decision.Barajas was born in Mexico but raised in Los Angeles since the age of seven. I mean, you see all this destruction and devastation."Oregon mailed ballots to addresses as clean-up continued, creating potential challenges for those now without homes or mailboxes, like Erica Ramirez."To me, it was worth a lot," Ramirez said of her home of 13 years that burned into a pile of metal.The state provided a website to help answer questions for voters displaced by the flames.The fire has taken so much, but not her right as an American citizen to vote in her first presidential election."I am going to vote until God gives me life and strength to do so," she said.Ramirez had her ballot sent to a temporary address, which is legal in Oregon, a process helping many voters who are unsure of where they will live next.For Camberos, as an organizer with Unite Oregon, her focus is on making sure this area’s large Latino population is heard. She says many Latino voters will be casting ballots for the first time. She posted voter information fliers across the area in both English and Spanish."It's important to connect with my community and to say, ‘We are fighting for our lives right now. Things looked grim aboard the Southwest flight.About 20 minutes after their flight departed from New York, passengers say they heard what sounded like explosions. The emergency from an engine failure appeared to have shattered a window on the plane. And what was most dire was that a female passenger was being sucked into the hole left by the broken glass.In those tumultuous moments with oxygen masks dangling down the cabin and passengers screaming as they struggled to save the woman, none of the panic came through in the voice of a pilot on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380.Tammie Jo Shults' name has not been officially released by Southwest Airlines, but passengers who were on the flight have identified her as the pilot. Many of them are praising her for how she handled the emergency Tuesday.In air traffic control audio, a female pilot spoke calmly and slowly, describing the emergency that was unraveling more than 30,000 feet in the air -- all the while trying to land a damaged plane suffering engine failure."We have a part of the aircraft missing," she told air traffic control.As they spoke briefly about the emergency landing the plane would have to make in Philadelphia, she asked matter-of-factly: "Could you have the medical meet us there on the runway as well? We've got injured passengers."Air traffic control responded: "Injured passengers, OK. And is your airplane physically on fire?""No, it's not on fire," she replied. "But part of it is missing.
