She fed presidents and Freedom Riders. She broke New Orleans' segregation laws by seating black and white patrons together. And she helped mend the country's divisions, one meal at a time.In her seven-decade culinary career, Leah Chase did far more than introduce thousands to Creole cuisine.The chef and civil rights activist died Saturday, her family said. They transformed it into an elegant sit-down Creole restaurant and African American art gallery -- something virtually unheard of during a time of rare black-owned businesses.Chase drew upon her childhood in Madisonville, Louisiana and her years as a server in New Orleans to reshape the restaurant.Even though her family was poor, the finery came out on Sundays."On Sunday we did have a white tablecloth and napkins, and we had that fried chicken and the baked macaroni, so Sunday was what you looked forward to," Chase told CNN last year.She wanted to bring those traditions to Dooky Chase's, as well as some of the customs she observed in French Quarter restaurants.There would be no ketchup bottles on the table. "When I came I said, 'No, we gonna do like we do on the other side of town. We gonna change things,' " she said. "That took a lot of doing, but we did it, and I insist on service."In the 1960s, Dooky Chase's became one of the few public places acceptable for races to mix while mapping strategy during the civil rights movement -- including black voter registration, NAACP meetings, and other political gatherings.Activists had a safe haven at Chase's restaurant."Nobody bothered them once they were in here. Smoking has been a lifelong habit for Pete Quinto.“Since I was 21,” he said. “I’m 53.”He lives in New Jersey, a state where the tax on cigarettes is just under a pack, but it could be higher.“I know New York’s pretty high,” Quinto said.New Jersey may soon be, as well. The governor is proposing a state cigarette tax of .35 a pack, placing it on par with New York and Connecticut as one of the highest cigarette taxes in the nation.The very highest? Washington D.C., at .50 a pack. Yet, cigarette taxes vary wildly across the country. The lowest is in Missouri: a mere 17 cents per pack. Others include 30 cents in Virginia, 84 cents in Colorado and .33 in Florida.“Raising taxes is the quickest way to reduce tobacco, particularly among young people and the poor, whom the tobacco industry preys,” said Matthew Myers, who heads up The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.He said there is a direct link between higher cigarette taxes and lower smoking rates.“The advantage of tobacco taxes is they reduce tobacco use more effectively, more efficiently and more predictably than any other single tactic, while also raising revenue for government,” Myers said.Yet, critics have pointed out that lower-income smokers get hit the hardest by taxes like these and a U.S. Surgeon General report earlier this year, found they have the least access to programs to help them quit.Still, at least one academic study, “Tax Burden on Tobacco,” shows the connection between higher taxes and lower smoking rates. It looked at the price of cigarettes and their sales from 1970 to 2017. The findings?
