SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Fixing San Diego’s streets was one of Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s top priorities when he took office, and now he believes they’re on schedule to reach his goal of repairing more than 3,000 miles of roads.About a decade ago, it took crews an entire year to get about 24 miles of street repairs done in the city. Now, crews are averaging 25 miles of street repair a month.Kris McFadden, director of San Diego’s Transportation & Storm Water Department, said the pandemic helped them get the work done without causing much backups on the roads.“We staggered working times, people coming in different times. So, we were able to do a lot of repairs, especially when people weren’t driving on the roads,” said McFadden.Faulconer said, “When I ran for mayor, there was no issue that San Diegans complained about more than streets, so we have been on a mission over the past six years to bring smooth streets to neighborhoods across the city. We overhauled the repair program to speed up fixes, made record investments in street repair, and are on pace to fix half of all City streets by the end of the year. The robust program we now have in place fixes hundreds of miles annually and I strongly encourage the next Mayor to keep the pedal to the metal until every San Diegan can experience a freshly paved street outside their front door.”In a news release, city officials said crews “completed repair work on some of the City’s busiest streets including completing repairs to North Harbor Drive, Fairmont Avenue, Montezuma Road, and a network of streets in Mission Bay that have not seen a major facelift in nearly two decades. Construction on Scripps Poway Parkway is underway and anticipated to be completed in December.”Even though the city is on track to repave half of the its entire street network by the end of the year, City Councilmember Vivian Moreno said there’s more work that needs to be done, specifically on dirt and gravel roads in neighborhoods like Stockton.Moreno sent ABC 10News a statement that read, in part: “These dirt streets are vestiges of the past maintained by policies that are over six decades old.”The city says they’re looking at this request, but the plan is to finish the repairs that have already been scheduled to meet the goal by the end of the year. 2308

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dreams of a degree take a backseat when you’re trying to find a safe place to sleep every night. As part of 10News’ Facing It Together initiative, we’re sharing a glimpse into life for homeless students and what’s being done to help them. “I’ve got to finish, that’s why I keep coming, I’ve got to finish,” said Brandon, a San Diego native who only wanted to be identified by his first name. Brandon started taking classes at City College three years ago in hopes of becoming a psychologist. “I love City, I love City, I feel so safe here and welcome here, I always have.” Six years sober, Brandon overcame a meth and heroin addiction. But he's been in and out of homelessness for several years. Complete Coverage: Facing It Together“Education will help me get out of this homeless situation, education will help my family, my kids included, get out of poverty.” Brandon spends more hours getting to and from school than inside the actual classroom. Living in Escondido, it's a two-hour bus commute each way. He and his dog are currently living in a shed with a bed made out of recycled materials. “I would love to have my own pad, that I can actually take a shower and wash dishes in a sink. Hot water, it’s been a while.” After surviving a suicide attempt in 2003, Brandon wants to help others struggling. And there are many. A 2018 study found 9 percent of university students were homeless in the last year. The figure was 12 percent for community college students. Stephanie Hernandez and her husband, both Palomar College students, became homeless after their landlord raised the rent. They spent a year and a half living in their car. “The biggest struggle was going to sleep at night and not knowing if you’d get woken up by the cops,” Hernandez said. “Having no job, having nothing, this being your home with no gas, and being stuck somewhere…it’s heart-shattering.” Hernandez was ready to quit until she confided in school employees, who told her about the campus food pantry. Palomar College helped Hernandez get a job and an emergency grant for a car expense. “I think we really addressed the food and nutrition part first; the homelessness thing is going to probably take a little longer.” Aiden Ely with Palomar College said the school has created a task force to look into safe overnight parking lots for students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite closing their cafeteria, Serving Seniors has begun offering to-go and delivery meals to seniors in need.At their location at 1525 4th Ave, they are distributing breakfast and lunch to anyone over 60-years-old, with a focus on low-income and homeless seniors.They are also doing home deliveries for those who are under the "self-isolation" request by the state.To request a delivery, call 619-235-6572.The county is also coordinating resources and can answer all non-emergency requests by calling 2-1-1. 537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Former Congressman Duncan Hunter Sr. called his son’s opponent in the November election a threat to national security to his face on Tuesday.Hunter Sr., the father of Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, held what he called a “security briefing” on Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar across from the U.S.S Midway Museum. Campa-Najjar is running against Duncan D. Hunter for his seat in the 50th Congressional District. Congressman Hunter and his wife Margaret are currently facing 60 federal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy.
