Turner appealed the conviction, arguing he didn't receive a fair trial.Persky's sentence sparked nationwide outrage by those who felt it too lenient. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California fire authorities say Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power lines sparked the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history.Cal Fire said Wednesday the lines in the Pulga area ignited the Nov. 8 fire that killed 85 people in Paradise.The investigation also identified a second nearby ignition site involving vegetation and electrical distribution lines, also owned and operated by the San Francisco-based utility.The second fire was quickly consumed by the initial fire.Lynsey Paulo, a spokeswoman for PG&E, did not immediately comment.The fire in Butte County destroyed nearly 15,000 homes.The nation's largest utility filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January as it faced tens of billions of dollars in potential liability costs related to wildfires in 2017 and 2018. 823

SAN FRANCISCO — A California appeals court has upheld an order requiring Uber and Lyft to treat their California drivers as employees instead of independent contractors, less than two weeks before voters will be asked to exempt the ride-hailing giants from the state’s gig economy law. The two companies have more than 400,000 drivers in California alone. Treating Uber and Lyft drivers as employees would guarantee benefits such as overtime and sick leave.Uber and Lyft had appealed an August ruling by a San Francisco judge, but the appellate ruling found "no legal error" and allowed the earlier ruling to stand. The legal fight started after state lawmakers passed a law that says companies can classify workers as contractors only if they perform work "outside the usual course" of the company's business. Thursday's decision won’t have any immediate impact because it doesn’t take effect for at least 30 days, well after the Nov. 3 vote on Proposition 22.Uber and Lyft, along with DoorDash, have heavily bankrolled the ballot measure.Proposition 22 on the California ballot this fall asks voters to create a special designation for drivers of app-based companies to be excluded from the new state law. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A California Assemblymember Thursday requested a state audit to review how that City and County of San Diego responded to a recent hepatitis A outbreak.In a letter to the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, Assemblymember Todd Gloria asks that the committee “determine whether both the County and City identified, contained, and treated the recent Hepatitis A virus (HAV) outbreak in accordance with statutory requirements and recommended procedures.”“We owe it to the 20 people who died and the more than 500 who contracted Hepatitis A to learn exactly what went wrong and what could have been done better,” said Assemblymember Todd Gloria. “It is my hope this audit will help us better understand how the City and County managed the Hepatitis A outbreak and ultimately make certain our region is sufficiently prepared to handle any future public health crisis that may arise.”According to the letter, the hepatitis A outbreak started in March of 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- One month after the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, the husband of one of the victims is speaking out for the very first time. Dr. Pat Davis is a well-known dentist in the community. He lost his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law in that tragic collapse. Davis says he’s still in a state of healing. But despite the pain of losing his family members, he is now urging local leaders to come up with a plan, so no family has to go through this again. “It’s a terrible thing to experience,” says Davis. “I can’t think of a worse situation that could of happened to me as a family man.”The Davis family was out for a day at the beach back on August 2nd. Davis’ wife Julie, daughter Annie Clave and Sister-in-law Elizabeth Davis were sitting under the cliff when it gave out, killing all three women. “People in my family have been down to Grandview beach a thousand times, over the last 25 years,” says Davis. “We’ve never looked at it as being a place that was really dangerous.”Annie Clave’s friend, Tiffany Rogers, was also at the beach that day. She held back tears describing her three friends. ““Three extraordinary women who had just everything, just beautiful, so beautiful on the inside,” says Rogers. As part of healing, Dr. Davis says his new purpose in life is to find a solution to stabilize the bluffs. He supports options like cutting off some access to the beach, sand replenishment, or putting a barrier wall along the cliffs. Just this past weekend, there have been two more bluff collapses, in Encinitas and Torrey Pines State Beach. A couple of weeks ago, Davis made a passionate plea before the Encinitas City Council to take action. Thursday afternoon, he shared his concerns with Congressman Mike Levin who is fighting to get federal funding to shore up the bluffs. “It’s not a question of if this is going to happen. It’s when it’s going to happen again,” says Davis. “All you have to do is go walk along our beaches up here; you see cliffs that look like they could fall at any time.” 2034
