SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Students at California Polytechnic State University are demanding action after a social media post showed a fraternity member in blackface.  The outrage came after a photo surfaced showing members of the fraternity throwing gang signs while dressed as gangster stereotypes, according to The Tribune.A photo later surfaced showing a fraternity member in blackface. The Instagram account that posted the photo has since been deleted.Late Monday afternoon, the dean of students announced that the fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, had been placed on interim suspension.The fraternity said in a statement to the school's newspaper that it is sorry "for failing to recognize the racial impacts this brought forth." 750

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom says California is turning the corner in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. He cited a significantly lower number of confirmed new cases as California begins to clear backlogged cases caused by a technical error. Newsom says he's also encouraged by the downward trend in hospitalizations, which have fallen 21% in the past two weeks. Dr. Roger Lewis, director with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, says there’s been “a clear decline” in hospitalizations there. California reported 180 additional deaths from the virus Wednesday, bringing the state's coronavirus deaths to more than 10,600. 674

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A kindergartner walked out of his Santee school, crossed a busy four-lane road and made it to his home more than a mile away, his mother told 10News Thursday.The Cajon Park Elementary student had been placed in a 3rd grade classroom with his upperclassman buddy when his grandmother arrived to pick him up.According to the 5-year-old boy’s parents, the 3rd grade teacher told the boy to pack his things because he was going home and sent him to the office alone.The boy didn’t fully understand the instructions and walked past the office to his home, crossing busy Magnolia Ave.There is only one gate in and out of the school and the boy apparently passed through it undetected.School administrators noticed the boy was missing about half an hour later and told his grandmother, who panicked.The boy’s mother said she realized something was wrong when her doorbell camera sent an alert. She looked at the video and saw her son on the front porch with a woman approaching him.The woman turned out to be a school administrator who had been searching for the boy.Rob Cunningham has a kindergartner at the school and was concerned by the incident.“We trust the school to know where our child is when we drop them off and expect them to be here when we pick them up,” Cunningham said.Santee School District Superintendent Dr. Kristin Baranski responded to 10News’ request for comments, saying the boy was found safe within 15 minutes.She added the school has a practice of sending a buddy with younger children when they need to visit the school office but in this case, the guest teacher did not follow the practice.Administrators will put additional communication practices in place with guest teachers to make sure they are aware of the policy, Baranski said. 1789

Saturday will mark the last time this decade we'll be able to see a blue moon, according to the Weather Channel.A blue moon actually has nothing to do with color —it simply means there have been two full moons in the same calendar month. A full moon occurs once every 29.5 days, so blue moons occur sporadically — about once every two-and-a-half years.When the full moon peaks at 8:37 ET on Saturday, it will mark the second full moon this month. The first full moon occurred on March 2. Take a good look, because it will be awhile before we see one again —Oct. 31, 2020, to be exact.It will actually be the second time this year we've experienced a blue moon. January also saw two blue moons — the first on Jan. 2, the second Jan. 31.2018 marks the first time since 1999 we've seen two blue moons in a single year. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A rare and beloved family tortoise disappeared from a Santee backyard, possibly grabbed by a thief.Along Jeremy Street, one fenced yard feels especially empty."Heartbroken. My whole family is heartbroken," said a tearful Melanie Clark.Shelly, a 20-year-old leopard tortoise, disappeared about three weeks ago. Clark and her husband returned home from a trip and opened the sliding door but Shelly never came in. Days before returning, Clark says her daughter put down some lettuce on the backyard patio. The couple discovered it half-eaten, which was odd. Usually, Shelly comes back and finishes it.Still, Clark wondered if Shelly wandered off. "We checked all along the fence and saw no gaps," said Clark, who believes it all adds up to a thief."I'm just afraid that somebody saw her and said, 'What a beautiful animal, and I want that beautiful animal,'" said Clark.The foot-long, ten-pound tortoise is unique in its yellow-and-black coloring and origins. "She was one of the last South Africa tortoises to be imported into the United States," said Clark.Clark purchased Shelly at a local pet store before a 2001 ban on the importing of leopard tortoises to the U.S. They were banned because of a certain tick the tortoises may carry.The tortoise, native to Africa, is sensitive to cold temperatures."I'm just worried about not being kept warm. We bring her inside when it's cold. We use special lights and heat to keep her warm," said Clark.She made a plea to the person who took Shelly."Please bring her home to us. She's not just a tortoise.
