OXON HILL, Md. -- For sisters Nikki Howard and Jaqi Wright, life comes down to a handful of ingredients.”Love, peace and cheesecake,” Wright said.It’s cheesecake that started them off on a new journey, while the two were furloughed during the federal government shutdown two years ago.“We went through the holidays just praying that it would let up,” Wright said. “And it didn't.”“So, for New Year's Eve service, I made sweet potato cheesecakes,” Howard said.Wright continued, “She gave them to me put it in the fridge. I had no idea, until I asked, ‘Who made those?’ And she said, ‘me.’”Howard said her mother and Wright began eating some of it, before her mom declared, “she said, ‘it's so good you can sell it,’ and light bulbs went off.”That is how their small business, called “The Furlough Cheesecake,” came to be. At first, they started by simply selling them online, but it quickly snowballed from there, right into area Walmart stores.“I had no idea that that one cheesecake would change everything,” Wright said.Now, they’re going a step further. At National Harbor near Washington, D.C. they just opened their first physical storefront.“So, we started our business during a furlough and we opened a store during a pandemic,” Wright said. “It makes us sound crazy, honestly, but it just happened this way.”They are fortunate. The pandemic is hitting many small businesses hard and Black-owned businesses especially so. According to data from the U.S. Census, compiled by economists at the University of California - Santa Cruz, between February and April, the number of African-American owned businesses dropped by 41%. Economists now estimate half of all African-American owned businesses may never reopen from their COVID-19 closures.At The Furlough Cheesecake, they know timing is everything.“We just took a leap of faith,” Wright said.Faith that has guided them through two – separate – tough economic times.“There's so many people out there struggling and suffering,” Howard said, “and being a minority-owned business, you know, we feel a responsibility to shed a good light on our community.”It’s all just one part of their unusual recipe for success. 2175

PALA INDIAN RESERVATION, Calif. (KGTV) --A woman was arrested after reportedly attacking three elderly victims with a baseball bat on the Pala Indian Reservation on Saturday.According to The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the three victims were visiting from Los Angeles and broke down on the side of Pala Mission Road after visiting the nearby casino.Deputies say all three victims are Cambodian and do not speak English. While on the side of the road the suspect, identified as Michelle Cagey Limon, 32, approached their vehicle and began striking it with a bat.When the two men inside the car got out, Limon hit one of them with the bat and punched the other in the face. The men ran away, leaving a female victim to take shelter inside the car.Deputies say the suspect then smashed out all the windows before also fleeing the scene. All three victims were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.Limon is being charged with three counts of elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism. During her arrest, deputies found a small drug lab inside the home, resulting in the arrest of Matthew Geyer, 37, on drug charges. 1164

Police bodycam footage shows a man body-slamming a suspect who was resisting arrest in Provo, Utah, police said.Officer Austin Williams was responding to a Sam’s Club on July 24 for a welfare check when a man attacked the officer, then fled on foot.As he was fleeing, bodycam video shows an unidentified man lift the suspect in the air and slam him to the ground."Chief Ferguson wants to thank that person for coming to the aid of an officer in need. Police said four people were injured Wednesday in two separate knife attacks about 30 minutes apart in central Vienna, Austria.Three victims were injured in the first attack outside a restaurant near the Nestroyplatz subway station, a police spokesman told CNN. Police are investigating a car crash that killed a zebra in Chandler, Arizona on Wednesday morning.Several area residents posted in a neighborhood Facebook group about the crash around 6 a.m. local time, including rumors that the animal may have escaped from the Ostrich Festival grounds nearby. Chandler Police confirmed that a vehicle struck a zebra. They say the zebra, who was from the Ostrich Festival, was killed in the crash. The driver suffered minor injuries. Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix on the scene caught crews towing away a white SUV with front-end damage. A zebra was also spotted in a pen with ostriches on a property off the road, but it appeared to be uninjured.  712
