Another Confederate statue came down on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus this week.A crowd of nearly 250 protestors took down the statue known as Silent Sam on the eve of the new school year.According to a school website, the statue was built in 1913 and was put up to commemorate Confederate soldiers from the university, "who died for their beloved Southland" during the Civil War.The removal of the statue comes months after students and some faculty began calling for it to be taken down.As that played out in North Carolina, another monumental change occurred in Oklahoma, as the Tulsa Public Schools, after weeks of debate, voted to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary School.In the past three years, over 100 Confederate monuments have been removed. However, far more remain, and are still being cataloged.  They’re also not just in the south.According to a recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, more than 1,700 monuments and namesakes, commemorating the Confederacy remain."The SPLC, of course, does not support destruction of memorials,” says Lecia Brooks, with the SPLC. “We just believe they should be removed from public space to a place where they can be taught about in context-- to a museum, to an archive.”Brooks says the two events this week, both occurring at the very start of the school year, sends a message that the debate is far from over."College admins do themselves a disservice and underplay the students if they think that they’re just going to simply forget about these things at the end of the school year and come back and start a school year anew with the same monuments existing,” Brooks says. “I think it’s wonderful. An 11-year-old boy is dead after being shot by his brother Monday night in Streetsboro, Ohio, according to authorities.Streetsboro police were called to Alden Drive just before 10 p.m. for reports of a shooting.Streetsboro Police Chief Darin Powers said an 11-year-old boy was shot by his 13-year-old brother in what "appears to be a premeditated act."The weapon used was a handgun that the 13-year-old stole from his grandfather's home, according to police.The police department said paramedics took the 11-year-old to University Hospital Portage Medical Center, where the victim was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.The 13-year-old brother was arrested and charged with aggravated murder and was taken to the Portage County Juvenile Detention Center.It appears the 11-year-old boy was shot in the back, according to police.Police are not releasing any names because they are juveniles.Lieutenant Patricia Wain, of the Streetsboro Police Department, spoke to reporters on Tuesday about the fatal shooting."It doesn't happen here. It's traumatizing. A lot of our officers here have kids that age so to have to walk into that and see that and take that call, it's very difficult," Wain said. 1242

An altercation between two families at a toddler's birthday party in Texas led to a shooting that left four men dead and one injured, authorities said.Police responded to reports of a shooting at a 1-year-old's party in Taft on Saturday, said Sgt. Among the many casualties of social-distancing directives is the child’s birthday party. So when coronavirus lockdowns came to Truckee in the California mountains, Craig Fierro wanted to do his part. Fierro runs a shop specializing in motorized vehicles, parts and maintenance northwest of Lake Tahoe. He also carries brightly colored toy replicas of the motorbikes that are a favorite of kids who come to the shop. So he started dropping them off as wrapped birthday presents for tots and teens in the community in mid-April. According to the Sierra Sun, Fierro posted on Facebook asking if there were kids celebrating during the pandemic. After he handed out what he had in his story, Fierro got a surprise when he went to re-order. When the distribution center learned what he was doing, they reportedly sent him double his order.
