SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show continued Tuesday in Del Mar.The Board that oversees the fairgrounds is reviewing the show that has been hosted at the fairgrounds for the last 28 years.A pro-gun, second-amendment political action committee collected more than 3,100 letters in support of continuing the show in Del Mar.The letters were given to the board for review and consideration. Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners is pushing is pushing for the board to renew the shows contract with no restrictions or limitations."It took us less than a week to collect all these signatures, we could have gotten more. Some are written by entire families who come to the show every year. It is a family event with almost a 30 year history with Del Mar," said Schwartz. Protesters also made an appearance at the board meeting dressed in orange and asking the board to cancel the shows current contract.The Del Mar, Solanna Beach and Encinitas city councils have approved resolutions calling for a ban on the gun shows at the fairgrounds.Guns can be purchased at the show, but California law requires extensive background checks and a waiting period.The board will make a decision to cancel or continue the gun show at it's board meeting in September. 1329

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The first drivable, life-size LEGO Technic car will be on display through the holidays at Legoland California.The model featuring the Bugatti Chiron weighs one and a half tons and is a 1:1 replica of the world's fastest supercar. It took Lego builders more than 13,000 hours and more than 1 million Lego Technic pieces to recreate and assemble the car's sleek design and lines.While the actual Chiron can reach a record-setting top speed of 304 mph, this version can travel up to about 18 mph, according to the park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego could go to court to invalidate a landmark pension reform measure that voters overwhelmingly supported in 2012.The City Council is expected to meet in closed session the week June 10 to decide whether to ask a judge to throw out Measure B. The measure switched most new hires from pensions to 401(k) style retirement plans. More than 65 percent of San Diego voters supported Measure B in 2012. The problem, however, is that the measure got to the ballot via a citizens initiative, but then-Mayor Jerry Sanders campaigned on its behalf. Labor unions challenged the initiative in court, contending the mayor's involvement meant the city needed to meet and confer with them. The state Supreme Court agreed, and an appellate court ordered the city to make its employees whole, plus pay them 7 percent interest. The courts, however, did not invalidate Measure B, instead directing the city to work out a compromise with the unions. On Thursday, City Councilman Scott Sherman and former Councilman Carl DeMaio held a news conference pushing the city to protect Measure B."Right now we are being asked to go against what our bosses told us, and I don't think we should do that," Sherman said, adding that the city spends 0 million a year now meeting its minimum pension obligations. DeMaio said he would work with a coalition to go to court to protect Measure B. "I'm talking about putting the City of San Diego back on the brink of bankruptcy, let alone telling voters that they don't have a say on where their tax dollars go," he said. Early estimates indicate the amount needed to make employees whole ranges from negligible to million.Michael Zucchet, who heads the Municipal Employees Association, said the only rational way to move forward is to invalidate Measure B."It is time for the City and its citizens to move forward by ending the Prop B debacle with the least amount of additional litigation and expense, and at the same time help address the City’s severe recruitment and retention challenges brought about because San Diego is the only City in California with no defined benefit pension nor Social Security benefits for newly hired employees," Zucchet said in a statement.Mayor Kevin Faulconer said in a statement he would oppose any effort to get rid of Measure B. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The future of Horton Plaza was teased in a new set of renderings released by the firm that purchased the aging mall.Stockdale Capital Partners purchased Horton Plaza in June 2018 with the aim of revitalizing the center into a mixed-use high-tech office and retail space. Wednesday, the firm gave a glimpse at The Campus at Horton, showing a completely transformed Nordstrom building from a concrete facade into a glass-covered office space. The building will also see an addition 150,000-square-feet of space added to the existing structure.RELATED: Time's up: Horton Plaza says goodbye to iconic Jessop's Clock“The Campus at Horton is exactly what we hear some high tech companies are seeking in San Diego,” Mark Cafferty, President and CEO of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, said in a release. “The existing open floor plans and expansive square footage of the current Horton Plaza are perfectly suited to the design and layout of modern office spaces.”Another addition teased is an "amenity deck" that will take the current place of the mall's food court. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle between rideshare companies and drivers' unions is on the ballot in the form of Proposition 22. It's a way for companies like Uber and Lyft to push back against California's Assembly Bill 5, which classifies drivers as employees with benefits instead of independent contractors.The gig companies are fighting the state in court, so they haven't been following those rules since the law went into effect on Jan. 1. Now, the fate of drivers will be in the hands of California voters on Nov. 3.The Yes on 22 campaign is backed by Uber, Lyft, and Doordash.It would classify drivers as independent contractors.Drivers could work towards a stipend to help purchase their own health insurance.They would also get some hourly pay, but only during what's called "engaged time." Yes on 22 says engaged time starts from the moment a driver accepts a ride until they drop the passenger off. It does not include time drivers spend waiting for their next passenger."If you were to compensate for all the time the driver spent on an app, you'd have to force them to accept every ride that comes across which would eliminate their flexibility to choose when they want to work and how long they want to work," said Vetter.Driver Al Porche says that's exactly why he's voting yes."Times are great right now," said Porche. "I've been driving all this year. I switched over from transporting people to delivering food and meals or groceries."According to the New York Times, rideshare companies have spent more than 0 million promoting the campaign, making it the costliest in state history.A "No" vote on Prop 22 would continue the current ruling under AB 5, reclassifying drivers as employees with a swath of rights and protections.Tonje Ettesvoll is against Prop 22, warning it's deceptive if you don't look closely."When you look at all these ads on TV and social media, that is Uber and Lyft's voice, said Ettesvoll. "That is not the driver's voice."She's been driving full-time for four years in San Diego and says it's only gotten worse."They have cut my rate many, many times to the point where I'm driving from 40 hours a week to 60 with the same pay."Nicole Moore with Rideshare Drivers United says about 40% of the job is waiting for your next ride -- time Prop 22 wouldn't pay up for in terms of pay or benefit because it's not considered engaged time."This is work. Just because you're a cashier in a store and you don't have somebody checking out doesn't mean you're not paid," said Moore. "It is definitely helping the billionaires and the people who are running these companies but it is not helping the drivers."The Yes on 22 campaign says if the proposition doesn't pass rides will be harder to find and prices will go up.
