The coronavirus has ruined a lot of things, but Children's Hospital of Orange County, California, made sure that the virus didn't cancel prom.Choc Ball 2020 had everything, even a disco ball.“I will never forget asking our maintenance crew to help me hang some disco balls from our valet which has never happened before.” Kara Noskoff, a program coordinator for the Child Life department at Children's Hospital of Orange County, said. It's her job to normalize the hospital environment for kids of all ages. She helps throw the oncology ball, which is held every year, to recreate what teems might miss out on at school."It’s not like going to their school dance,” Noskoff said. “They’re in a room full of 200 plus people dancing and taking pictures and dressed up with the health care professionals that took care of them as well as their peers that all have the same scars.”Except it's 2020. And it almost didn't happen due to too many high-risk patients and too many high-risk exposures. But the staff at Children's Hospital decided happiness is important too.“Their mental health and growth and development is so important as well. I’m so proud of… our staff to see that bigger picture and push the boundaries a little bit and find a way to keep them safe but give them these things to look forward to,” Noskoff said. They turned what was supposed to be a huge party into a socially distanced, masked, drive thru experience complete with a theme. "Driving through the decades" had a photo booth, party favors, music and dancing. And it was everything that 17-year-old Veronica Larson could dream of.“There’s a bridge that crosses from the hospital into the employee parking and I looked up and all the nurses that had finished their shift were up in the bridge they were all cheering and clapping there was music playing,” Larson said.Cancer treatment is hard enough. Add in COVID-19 and its restrictions, and teens like Larson have struggled.“I would be considered immunocompromised so I’m being extra careful but there are safe ways like this oncology ball, but I am able to see my peers and that’s one of the reasons why it was so important to everyone being able to have that interaction in such a time of isolation,” Larson said.Back in 2015, Larson was an aspiring gymnast. She suffered a pulled hamstring that led to exhaustion and then a diagnosis of leukemia. She was only 12 years old. Now, she's in remission and building back her strength. And found her way back into gymnastics as a coach.“My hair is growing back. I’m trying to rock the short hair,” Larson said. The medical staff at CHOC is a huge part of Larson's life. After all, they helped her apply for college from her hospital bed. The soon to be freshman at UCLA wants to go into pediatric medicine and credits the children's hospital that gave her so much life with helping her find her future.“Obviously it’s an area I’ve been involved in and I think I can make a difference there and I’ve met incredible people and I would love to be a part of a team of such amazing people,” she said.Amazing people who all got to be together, even if from a distance for one night, created an evening that was just as magical for the staff as it was for the patients.“The night itself blew me away it was beyond anything I could have imagined,” Larson said.Proof that the coronavirus can't steal joy, happiness, or prom. 3390

The CBS board of directors is in the process of picking outside counsel to conduct an investigation after company CEO Les Moonves was accused of sexual misconduct. In a statement, CBS said that "no other action" was taken on the matter at Monday's board meeting. The meeting was scheduled before a bombshell report in The New Yorker Friday detailed allegations against the CEO. Six women told the magazine that Moonves sexually harassed them.In a statement to The New Yorker that was also obtained by CNNMoney on Friday, Moonves said he has "promoted a culture of respect and opportunity for all employees" throughout his tenure at CBS."I recognize that there were times decades ago when I may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances," Moonves said. "Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely. But I always understood and respected — and abided by the principle — that 'no' means 'no,' and I have never misused my position to harm or hinder anyone's career."The idea that Moonves should step aside during the probe was raised by at least some board members this weekend, according to one source who spoke to CNNMoney on Sunday. The board also said on Monday that it would postpone its annual meeting of stockholders, which was scheduled to be held August 10. A new date has not yet been announced. It was not clear why the board decided to reschedule that meeting. 1400

The former chief administrative officer for the Department of Housing and Urban Development says she was demoted in part for refusing to spend more than was legally allowed to redecorate Secretary Ben Carson's new office. In a November 2017 complaint obtained by CNN, Helen Foster said she was told to "find money" beyond the legal ,000 limit for redecorating. In one instance, she says a supervisor said that ",000 will not even buy a decent chair."Foster's sworn complaint with the Office of Special Counsel, the independent agency charged with investigating whistleblower complaints made by government employees, says that after she refused to misuse taxpayer dollars for the office redecoration project she was "retaliated against by being taken out of my position as Chief Administrative Officer."She says that HUD's Acting Secretary Craig Clemmensen pulled her aside more than a month before Carson's March confirmation and told her that Carson's wife, Candy, wanted to "help the Secretary redecorate his office suite." Clemmensen asked Foster to assist with "getting Mrs. Carson access and funds for the project," the complaint states.Foster said she told Clemmensen that legally, the department was limited in how much it could spend on the office redecorating project to ,000, information she says she also passed along to the administrative officer in the Secretary's office. But even so, Foster said she received repeated pressure in multiple conversations to "find money" for the redecorating project in excess of what was legally allowed, including in a one-on-one meeting on February 10. Clemmensen, according to the complaint, told Foster that the administration "has always found money for this in the past."In an exclusive interview with CNN, Foster said each time Clemmensen pushed her to assist Carson's wife with finding the money, it was always "in the context of Mrs. Carson wants to do this. We have to find the money.""There was a sense of 'we are not going to take no for an answer.' There was a lot of staff time spent on this" a former HUD employee with knowledge of the situation told CNN."The most frustrating part of all this was spending so much time on this issue," the former employee said. "Instead of focusing on HUD's mission, we were talking about furniture for the Secretary's office.A HUD official disputed Foster's account."When it comes to decorating the Secretary's office, the only money HUD spent was ,200 to put up new blinds in his office and the Deputy Secretary's office,"HUD spokesman Raffi Williams told CNN. "The Secretary's Administrative officer is aware of the limit and ensured that the limit was not exceeded." HUD provided receipts to CNN that total ,373.Neither Candy Carson nor Clemmensen responded to a request for comment. On Tuesday, the liberal group American Oversight sued HUD in an attempt to find out how much taxpayer money Carson used to renovate or redecorate his office.American Oversight said that in November it submitted Freedom of Information Act requests for more than 20 agencies, including HUD, but that HUD did not respond to the information request. The latest allegations come as Carson is facing scrutiny for the role that his family has played in his department, after reports that his son, Ben Carson, Jr., organized an official listening tour in Baltimore last year against the advice of department lawyers that the move risked violating federal ethics rules. Carson has called on HUD's inspector general to review the issue. The IG's office calls it an "open matter." Carson has said that his family is "under attack" and that he wants to "put to rest these unfounded biases."Foster said she was so frustrated and concerned about the pressure she was under that she reached out to Sarah Lyberg, HUD's acting assistant chief financial officer for budget, on February 13. In the email which has been reviewed by CNN, she wrote that she had been asked about "finding additional money.""Is there any way Admin could appropriately spend additional funds over 00 to provide new furnishings or decorating for the Secretary's Office without getting appropriations approval," Foster asked Lyberg in the email.Lyberg responded: "We cannot exceed the cap."Further evidence that the issue continued to be a topic for discussion came On February 22, when the office of HUD's Chief Financial Officer sent a memo to Clemmensen and Janet Golrick, the department's acting deputy secretary, detailing the rules surrounding funds for decorating Carson's office. The memo, which was obtained by CNN, said that spending of more than ,000 "requires advance notice to the House and Senate Committees on Appropriations." If the department failed to give that notice, it would violate the Antideficiency Act, which bars federal agencies from spending federal money before it has been appropriated by Congress.Securing the Secretary 4926

The family whose dog died on a United Airlines flight in March has reached a settlement with the carrier, the family attorney and the airline said Thursday. The 10-month-old French bulldog named Kokito was inside an overhead bin on Flight 1284 from Houston to New York after a flight attendant told the passenger to put it there. When the plane landed at LaGuardia Airport, the dog was dead. The financial details of the settlement are confidential as part of the agreement, according to Evan Oshan, the attorney representing the Catalina Robledo family.United spokesman Charles Hobart said the airline began a comprehensive review of its animal transport policy and is collaborating with American Humane?to improve its practices. That group works to ensure the safety of animals."We are deeply sorry for this tragic accident and have worked with the Robledo family to reach a resolution," Hobart said.As a result of the incident, New York state Sen. Marisol Alcantara, a Manhattan Democrat, crafted legislation entitled Kokito's Law -- a new pet passenger bill of rights.Alcantera is the prime sponsor of the legislation, a measure is now in the state Senate Consumer Protection Committee.Among the proposals in the legislation are banning the placement of pets in overhead storage compartments, 1316

The Danish government said they plan to kill 15 million minks after the animals spread a coronavirus mutation to humans. In a press release, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that a mutation of the virus has already spread from the infected minks to 12 people in North Jutland.Frederiksen added that the virus could spread to other countries and "carry the risk that the upcoming vaccine will not work as it should.""Denmark has a responsibility to our population," Frederiksen said in the news release. "With the mutation that has now been established, we now also have a greater responsibility for the rest of the world. A mutated virus risks being spread from Denmark to other countries. Therefore, we must take the situation on the Danish mink farms extremely seriously." 786
