LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa Police are looking into a harassment claims after a disturbing video captured outside a local business circulated online.Police said they were aware of reports regarding Peter's Men Apparel, a local men's clothing retailer on La Mesa Blvd. Police told 10News they've received at least two crime reports — one for battery and one for lewd act in public — in regards to separate incidents at the store on Saturday, Jan. 18.The video that sparked outrage appeared to show a man sitting outside the store with his hands up a woman's shirt, according to the original post's caption. 618

LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received. LARGO, Florida — In the span of about 10 minutes, jurors in the sentencing trial of convicted cop killer Marco Parilla handed down two sentences. Only one was correct. And, it isn't what family members of fallen Tarpon Springs, Florida Police Officer Charles Kondek were hoping for.The jury had supposedly unanimously decided death was the appropriate penalty, but then the judge noticed some numbers scribbled out on the forms and asked the jury to go back and confirm all 12 jurors agreed on death.  Upon their return to the courtroom, the jury came back with a verdict of life in prison, as only 10 jurors voted for the death penalty and two for life in prison.The judge, explaining to Kondek's family and friends that under a new Florida law, the decision to sentence someone to death must be unanimous. The jurors made a paperwork error filling out their verdict that led to the confusion.Kondek's widow Theresa couldn't believe an error was made."Relief, we felt like justice was served for Charlie. We waited three years for this and then to have it taken away that was a little tough," Kondek said. "It’s closure for us. Obviously, we wanted the death penalty."Kondek said this chapter of her life is over and all she wants to do is move forward and live a life that will honor her fallen husband. "No one wins. Either way, my husband will never come home," Kondek said.  Parilla was convicted of murdering Officer Charles Kondek of the Tarpon Springs Police Department back in 2014.On Thursday, Parilla told the family he was ashamed of what he did and tried to apologize to the fallen officer's family.After learning Parilla would not face the death penalty, family members told him in their victim impact statements that they hoped he died in prison sooner rather than later."You are an animal and I hope you die the worst death possible, a shiv across the neck or something," Charles Kondek, the fallen officer's father told Parilla. 2038

Let's face it, pets are family. And even when you don't have a home, they come first. One non-profit group of dedicated veterinarians, is helping make sure these "street dogs" are getting the care they need, much to the relief of their human companions.Shannon Arakaki is doing her best to comfort her dog Rocky, as he gets his ear drained. After all, she says he's always been there to comfort her."Oh yeah there's been some ups and downs," said Arakaki. "Lived in my truck you know we stay at my truck off and on right now."When Rocky hurt his ear, Arakaki had no idea how she'd deal with it."I don't have the money to go to a vet and this is my only option right now unless you know I'm going to sell my truck," said Arakaki. "I can't do that I'm not going to go live in a tent."That's where one group of veterinarians come in. They are treating Rocky for free."This is phenomenal," Arakaki said. "Because it's so hard and when you're at the point where you don't really have any money and you're trying just basically to survive. They come before you."With just a table and supplies these vets are caring for the pets of people who are homeless or near homeless. They call themselves the Street Dog Coalition, setting up care centers on streets around the country, or in this case, at a shelter."We are not doing major surgeries," said Dr. Jon Geller, who founded the Street Dog Coalition. "We're not doing x-rays but we have to use our x-ray vision which just means a lot of best guessing going on."Dr. Geller says it not only helps pets stay healthy, but also tears down barriers for people who already have enough up."What do you do for a job interview?" Dr. Geller said. "What do you do for a job? There's no doggie daycare and they can't get on the bus and staying over night in shelters but that's in most cases it won't happen."Dr. Geller says sometimes the homeless are judged for having pets, but not here."They will feed their pets first," Dr. Geller said. "So they live pretty good lives and these owners are pretty committed and I think that we should be supportive of their efforts to have pets."They are helping preserve relationships that go beyond mere companionship."Without having somebody for me to give a damn about I may not care about myself as much," Arakaki said. 2324

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa Police Department released body camera footage on Wednesday showing the events that led up to an arrest video that surfaced last week.About 30 seconds of the video provide by police starts without any sound. LMPD Chief Walt Vasquez said the beginning of the video is muted because of the way the body camera is activated. (See the video above and below.)Raw footage of bodycam footage would be released for four officers involved in the arrest of Amaurie Johnson on May 27, according to La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis.Last week, video surfaced showing an argument between Johnson and an officer escalate at the Grossmont Trolley Station. The officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position onto a bench during the video. Eventually, Johnson is handcuffed and told he is being charged with assaulting an officer.Vasquez added that the officer involved in the video has been an officer for about three years. He added that while Johnson was initially stopped for smoking in a trolley area, he wasn't charged with that when he was arrested.Johnson also denied in a separate press conference after city officials spoke that he was smoking. (Press conference below.)“For that situation to escalate the way it did, and for the cop, you know, to stand firm in his beliefs that I should be detained or taken in with no prior evidence or reasoning, I think that should be seen by the people,” Johnson told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin.He said he was waiting for his friend at the trolley stop, near a building where that friend lives. He added that the officer started questioning him and that he gave the officer the information that he wanted.Johnson adds that he didn't resist or assault anyone."I feel as though people that look like me, um, feel the same way I do and we're tired of it. We're tired of having to deal with stuff like that,” Johnson said.The video prompted the city to begin a special investigation into the incident and LMPD to place the officer involved on administrative leave pending the investigation. 2072
