XINING, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local government to pay more attention to improving people's living conditions during reconstruction in the quake-hit Yushu of northwest China's Qinghai Province.Hui made the remark during his inspection tour on Saturday to the area jolted by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on April 14.At the worst-hit Gyegu town, Hui inspected supply of water, food and fuel, local market, as well as health care services for quake survivors. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending in the world's fastest-growing economy, rose 18.7 percent year on year to 1.25 trillion yuan (183 billion U.S. dollars) in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday.The growth rate was 3.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year and 0.2 percentage points higher than April's, said NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun.Urban consumption hit 1.08 trillion yuan in May, up 19.1 percent year on year, while rural residents spent 163.7 billion yuan, up 15.8 percent.  A woman walks by a sale advertising poster in Beijing, capital of China, May 11, 2010.In the first five months, total retail sales climbed 18.2 percent to 6.03 trillion yuan. The growth rate was 3.2 percentage points higher than the same period last year.The government rolled out a series of incentives to bolster consumption to counter the fallout from the global economic downturn, including subsidies for home appliances in rural areas and tax breaks for auto purchases, in early 2009, among others.China's auto sales in May rose 28.35 percent from a year earlier to 1.44 million units, bringing combined sales in the first five months to 7.6 million units, up 53.25 percent from a year earlier.Monthly sales of home appliances in China's countryside surged 220 percent year on year in May to 12.6 billion yuan. The figure for January-May period was 54.35 billion yuan, up 400 percent from year on year.

  

SHANGHAI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai World Expo marked its 100th day Sunday, with the first group of visitors arriving as early as 4 a.m.Some, like Ni Dan from eastern Jiangsu Province, even chose to stay overnight in front of the Expo Park entrance to guarantee obtaining tickets to some of the most popular pavilions.Ni, 20, and two of his classmates were the first visitors entering the Expo Park Sunday.Ni said, "We chose to visit Expo today for three reasons: it's the Expo's 100th day; it's the second anniversary of the Beijing Olympic Games; plus it's the eighth day of the eighth month, which is considered by many an auspicious number."Sitting on the ground or on 10-yuan (about 1.5 U.S. dollars) plastic folding stools newly purchased from vendors, people chatted, played cards or meditated to reserve energy for a very long day of waiting, walking, viewing and waiting again.Nearly 38 million visitors, about 95 percent of whom are Chinese and nearly 80 percent are non-Shanghainese, have come to the Expo Park since its opening on May 1, and an average of about 450,000 visitors came to the Expo Park per day in August, equal to the population of a mid-level Chinese county, according to the Expo bureau.The bureau also said shuttle buses in the Expo park have carried nearly 100 million visitors since the Park's opening, as the buses were out on a run every 14 seconds.

  

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security has vowed to crack down on domestic and foreign online gambling organizations as a number of football gambling web sites were discovered online following the start of the World Cup in South Africa."Currently, police departments at all levels should focus on the World Cup and keep close watch on domestic and foreign online gambling groups. Dig deep for the violators behind them, seize evidence and give a hard blow to online football gambling," urged vice minister Huang Ming at a meeting Tuesday.Figures from the ministry show that Chinese police shut down 1,461 foreign gambling web sites in less than one week after the start of the 2010 World Cup."Gambling, drugs and prostitution are still rampant in some areas, causing civilians to issue strong complaints... In some places, these wrongdoings have even been conducted in board daylight." Huang added.According to Huang, law enforcement agencies at all levels will focus on entertainment venues that host prostitution, obscene performances, group gambling and drug trafficking, and violators will be severely punished.The ministry also ordered law enforcement agencies to strictly monitor local police and punish those who are slack in stopping these illegal activities in their own regions.Also at the meeting, the ministry announced a nationwide campaign on the control of guns, scheduled to end this September, in a bid to prevent gun-related crimes.
