SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego International Airport broke its passenger traffic record for the fifth consecutive year, serving roughly 24 million passengers in 2018, the Airport Authority announced Friday.The total -- up nearly 10 percent over last year -- included one million international passengers, a 19 percent jump from 2017, according to the Airport Authority, which credited several airlines' expanded service and airport-wide traffic increases for the new record.``This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,'' said Kim Becker, the airport's president and CEO. ``With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.''Airlines servicing the airport added 16 new routes throughout the year and 15 of the airport's 17 airlines saw overall traffic increases.According to the Airport Authority, Southwest Airlines added 794,401 passengers from 2017 to 2018, the most of any airline flying out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The body of a 14-year-old boy was found near railroad tracks by a maintenance crew in the Bay Ho neighborhood, sheriff's officials said.At about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, the crew discovered someone who appeared to be struck by a train in the area of 6000 Santa Fe St., according to Lt. Thomas Seiver of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department homicide unit.After an investigation at the scene by the sheriff's Railroad Enforcement Team, the homicide unit took over the case, Seiver said.The boy has been identified and his next of kin notified, but his name is being withheld because it may jeopardize the investigation, the lieutenant said.The county Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the boy's death, Seiver said.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the sheriff's homicide unit at 858-285-6330 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 929

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to extend a moratorium on evictions for both residents and small businesses for another month, in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, along with board Chairman Greg Cox, made the request, which was unanimously approved. The board first approved an eviction moratorium in late March."By extending the moratorium, we are giving families and business owners another tool to assist in their recovery from the pandemic," Fletcher said. "The Board of Supervisors did the right thing today."Cox said: "This is not an effort to provide free rent. It's really an encouragement for tenants, landlords, to work together on a payment plan."Fletcher added that people who qualify for the moratorium have to prove economic hardship caused by the pandemic.Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said the San Diego Association of Realtors recently sent letter to the county and city of San Diego in support of a rental assistance program.Gaspar asked Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer if the county can create its own rental assistance program, saying property owners use the rental payments they receive to meet their own bills and employ others."I don't think any of us imaged this pandemic would go on so long," she said.
