SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man has made it his mission to lift up young people through sports. Gordon Brown is our LEAD San Diego Leadership Award winner for December. He’s a mentor for inner-city golfers, a sport often seen as a past-time for the 1 percent. “I played golf across the street from my house from where we lived, on the school ground. It was five of, three of us, that used one golf club,” said Brown. From those humble beginnings in South Carolina, Brown forged a career in professional golf that eventually led him to San Diego. In 1973, he started helping disadvantaged kids learn the game. "What golf teaches to the kids that we've raised through the San Diego inner City Junior Golf Foundation is honor, dignity respect, etiquette, and truly wanting to do something better with their lives.” Brown estimates he has worked with thousands of kids over the years. He may not remember them all, but they remember his patience, skill, and generosity through the San Diego Inner-City Junior Golf Foundation. 1032

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sailor who was rescued at sea off San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente was taken to San Diego by the Coast Guard Monday.The man called Joint Harbor Operations in San Diego about 11:20 a.m. to report his 18-foot boat was taking on water 12 miles offshore.“I tried a couple of things to fix the problem and couldn’t figure out where the water was coming in from,” Gillest said.He was able to radio the Coast Guard for help, who sent a helicopter crew to rescue him.“I was in contact with the pilot. He said if the stern starts going underwater, its time to get away from the boat,” Gillest said.  “The uncertainty was when I was getting out to me, watching it fill with water, I was like who’s going to get out here? Am I going to be in the water before anyone gets here?”By around 12:45 p.m., the boat began to sink and Gillest was forced to jump into the water. Gillest, who is retired military and a strong swimmer, says he was in the water for about 10 minutes.The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer and basket into the water, who was able to reach Gillest, put him into the basket, and hoist him up into the chopper. “Not really scared because I know the coast guard guys and they’re awesome,” Gillest said, “Everything went textbook.” 1282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man accused of causing a flood which some tenants confused for a terrorist attack faced a judge Wednesday to enter his not guilty plea.A Deputy District Attorney argued that Francisco Morales is a danger to the community."He poses a great threat to the community as there are over 200 individuals, citizens in the community of Little Italy who cannot go home; they have essentially lost everything," she said.The judge agreed, and raised Morales' bail from 0,000 to ,000,000. Morales faces 45 counts of felony vandalism and 5 counts of assault intended to cause great bodily injury.Several residents were forced to flee from their Little Italy apartment complex Monday morning after police said Morales opened pipes and used a fire hose to flood all eight floors of the building.Water from the hose and pipes made its way down to all floors, including the basement, according to authorities. Multiple witnesses said some residents were waist- or shoulder-deep in water as they tried to leave."It was like a waterfall coming down on you of water," tenant Ryan Lange said. "When I came down to the bottom floor there were people crying, we're trapped, we're trapped we can't get out!"Some residents said Morales sprayed them with fire hoses as they evacuated the building.Officers located Morales in the lobby and arrested him on suspicion of vandalism."It seemed like somebody was trying to kill everybody in there," Lange said the pain hasn't lessened over the past two days. "I feel like it's unlive-able; it smells like musty and moldy, looks like they're going to have to redo all the carpets and the drywall."Lange lives in one of the 45 units destroyed by the flood. He said he estimates his losses around ,000, not including his car.10News learned more than 200 people and their pets were displaced from the 100-unit complex.The building was being evaluated for any potential structure damage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166
