BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China has enacted 10 measures to prohibit better than average primary schools and junior high schools from charging "enrollment fees," or selling enrollment quotas, according to a statement posted on the website of the Ministry of Education on Monday.The statement reads, due to the difference in quality among schools, and a shortfall of excellent schools as compared to actual demand, the problem of "enrollment fees" has been reported, particularly in big cities.This is a particular problem in China, where parents pay to secure seats for their children in key schools if their children do not score high enough on entrance exams.The measures include forbidding schools from selling extra enrollment quotas in whatever names or methods, obliging schools to publicly disclose enrollment information, improving sub-quality schools, supporting private schools to enrich superior education resources, carrying out supervision and others regulations.

KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.

HANOI, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The cooperation among China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) is an important part of East Asian cooperation, and the correct direction of the tripartite cooperation should be firmly kept from a strategic perspective, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Friday at a meeting of leaders of the three countries.The cooperation among China, Japan and the ROK, an important part of East Asian cooperation, has been developing soundly with the efforts of the three countries, Wen said when meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.The three countries should attach strategic importance to the cooperation among them and steer it in the right direction. NANCHANG, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese commerce official on Sunday called on foreign investors to maintain their confidence in the country, promising China would make continuous efforts to improve its investment environment.Qian Fangli, deputy director of the Department of Foreign Investment Administration under the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), made the statement at a forum during the Expo Central China 2010 that opened Sunday.Although operation costs in China were rising because of higher labor and raw materials costs, foreign investment continued growing rapidly " because improvements in China's investment environment helped lower their investment costs and boost confidence," Qian said.Further, she noted that the Chinese government would continue to improve policies to encourage foreign investors. But she did not provide further details.In the first eight months of this year, foreign direct investment in China totaled 65.96 billion U.S. dollars, up 18.06 percent from one year earlier, according to MOC statistics.The Expo Central China, scheduled to run from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28, invited economists, entrepreneurs and officials to attend. The expo seeks to promote development in central China, which spans six provinces -- Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan.
