TUCSON, Ariz. - An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper intentionally collided with a wrong-way vehicle on Oct. 14.According to DPS, a trooper was assisting a stranded driver on the I-10 near Avra Valley. The trooper heard reports of a wrong-way vehicle traveling east within the westbound traffic lanes on I-10.The trooper found the wrong-way vehicle, approaching the car head-on near Cortaro Road. The trooper intentionally aligned the front left corner of his patrol vehicle with the front left corner of the wrong-way vehicle - forcing a collision that immediately stopped the wrong-way driver.DPS said the wrong-way driver was a disoriented, elderly woman. She was not properly restrained during the collision and sustained non-life threatening injuries. She was taken to Banner University Medical Center.The trooper was treated for minor injuries.“The ability of our trooper to assess the situation and take decisive action to stop the wrong-way vehicle, protected the lives of many motorists while endangering his own," said DPS Director, Colonel Frank Milstead. "I am proud of our brave trooper and pray he makes a full recovery and never has to face another wrong-way in his life.”  1216

United Airlines confirmed to ABC News on Tuesday that a dog died on board a flight from Houston to New York on Monday after flight attendants requested that the passengers keep the dog in the overheard storage compartment. According to a Facebook post by passenger June Lara, the dog belonged to a family, which included a young girl, a toddler and their mother on board the flight. Lara claimed that flight attendants said the dog would be safe inside the compartment for three hours during the flight. "This little guy fought hard for his life, filling our flight with his cries until he finally ran out of breath," Lara wrote. "United Airlines does not care about the safety of their furry travelers. This poor family paid 5 for their pet to be murdered in front of them. There is no excuse for the pain this family is suffering."United Airlines told ABC News it takes responsibility for the dog's death, but could not say whether anyone would be disciplined for Monday's incident. "This was a tragic accident that should have never occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin,” United said in a statement. “We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again.”According to United Airline policy, dogs are permitted on board flights as long as they are kept inside a kennel, which must fit completely under the seat in front of the customer and remain there at all times. 1603

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) - Family members are mourning the loss of Roland Escarcega Jr., a father of five and an apparent victim of those deadly blue pills. When Shonta Chaloux last saw his cousin, Escarcega was his usual jovial self."We were joking. I gave him a hard time, and he gave me a hard time," said Chaloux.Two months later, Chaloux got the news."Devastated, sad ... it was a family member who found him at his home," said Chaloux.Escarcega, 39, was found dead in his bed in late July at his home on the San Pasqual Indian Reservation after Escarcega, who worked for the tribe's water department, hadn't shown up for work. Chaloux doesn't know all the details, but says his cousin is one of the victims of the deadly pills mentioned in a sheriff's department warning."Assuming whoever went into his room and what was recovered matches what was found in the other victim's homes," said Chaloux.In late July, deputies said blue counterfeit Oxycodone pills, likely laced with Fentanyl, caused four overdose deaths in 36 hours. Chaloux says his cousin was among those who died during those 36 hours. Chaloux did not know his cousin was taking painkillers or who may have supplied them. "Whoever cut those pills, they deserve to go to prison. They are killing people," said Chaloux.Chaloux is hoping by sharing Escarcega's story, he can help other families."Listen to family members if they are struggling and see what they're struggling with," said Chaloux.For those who turn to the streets for pain relief, he has this message. "Don't do it. You're playing Russian Roulette with your own life," said Chaloux.Escarcega's funeral will be held Tuesday.
